Project Debut III
Can't get it setup exactly right I suppose. Followed tonearm counterweight and anti-skate directions umpteen times and it still wants to skate ever so slightly. I like my cheap old Technics a whole lot better right now. What's with the fishing line holding the antiskate weight anyway? May be I'm just cut out to stay very low end. BTW - when it did work I could not tell any difference between it and my old one. Crap.

Just get rid of it, vinyl stinks.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Hang in there, the tables can make you stress a bit, the table cannot change on its own, only you can do that, its a function of tracking force, cartridge alignment and anti-skate.
Maybe just call the dealer in the morning. I know when I first got mine it was a bit frustrating till MadMax talked me down through PM.

There's a new format out now that eliminates all said problems with vinyl. They're called CD's. Don't give up! It took me a couple of nights (and beers) to get mine set up correctly. I know the directions that came with mine had some errors, especially in regards to which way the counterweight needed to be turned. Try the directions off of their website, they seem to be correct.Wristwatch--->Crisco -
aside from the setup,(very important) what phono pre and cartdidge are you using? Good luck, and keep trying. After listening to mulvelings tt setup, I went home, listened to mine=crap. I'm now upgrading to a better tt/cart/phono pre,,keep plugging away,as it can/will sound stunning.:)JC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut)

Oh please, it took me 3 years to get mine to sound mildly better than crappy.
Stick with it and you will be rewarded greatly!

Wow you vinyl haters are rough. APC just be patient and you will get it to work and sound great. Much better then cd's

I know where your at. You got it, plugged it in, followed the procedure several times and are honestly looking at it saying WTF, what else could I possibly do??
Right?
There are tons of things. Most only make a small difference and it takes many different trys at different settings to get any noticeable improvement.
The most important thing I did was to place on a different surface. There are all sorts of things to try. MDF, hard wood, soft wood, high (or low or medium) mass, spiked to the floor or not, in a different location, different heights in the room, multiple layers of material with different damping between them etc.
This is only one little small aspect of the big picture.

I had the same issue. Bought a new (used) table that retails for $349. Got is set up as the manual stated, but even that was confusing and counter-intuitive.
Vinyl still sounds like crap, but I think that's more due to having dirty vinyl than a bad TT rig. Not really willing to purchase anything to clean vinyl that was dirt cheap. Sounds the same on my MH TT as it did on my nearly free Technics and nearly free Kenwood automated players. And, the automated ones are easier to use.
It does looks great in my new stand, tho, so it will stay. I just might not use it much.Stereo Rig: Hales Revelation 3, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre 24, Forte Model 3 amp, Lexicon RT-10 SACD, MMF-5 w/speedbox, Forte Model 2 Phono Pre, Cardas Crosslink, APC H15, URC MX-950, Lovan Stand

I strongly suggest to get Michael Framer's 21st century vinyl DVD. Once you actually see how it is getting done, it gets ,much easier to do.-izafar

Try it without the anti-skating weight. . . it's worth a try. -
I tried it every way except upside down. Messed with the dern thing for hours. Honestly, I am not happy with it compared to my old tank. Might just send it back and upgrade my cartridge when the time comes.Husband, Father, Son, Brother, Friend.

Did you contact the dealer or the manufacturer? Usually when something doesn't work this dramatically there is a "fix" in the tunnel by the manufacturer.

APC,
Sorry to hear of your experience. The Debut III is a solid table I had looked at in the past. You should be getting good results from it.Followed tonearm counterweight and anti-skate directions umpteen times and it still wants to skate ever so slightly.
Can you elaborate on this. Is it skating ever so slightly over your records when playing?
A couple of things:- Is the table on a rigid stand?
- Have you leveled the table?
- Have you tried setting the vertical tracking force lower/higher than the recommended value of 17.5 indicator marks for the supplied cart?
How many hours are on the cartridge? If it still have low hours, the cart may require more playing time before opening up.
Relax and take your time adjusting the TT. Note what works and continue along that path.
Post more information so others can try to help with the setup. All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed, second it is violently opposed and third, it is accepted as self evident. -
Wow...seems like a lot of work. Wouldn't a CD with a nice DAC be a lot simpler?

Yep it would be simpler but in my book unless you have a $6000 digital front end, vinyl sounds soooooo much better . . . despite its shortcomings. -

Ah, you're being too nice there Cathy. I gotta tell you, these vinyl nerds are really entertaining & serve up many good laughs. The way they are constantly complaining about how they can't get there TT to sound good. Well no ****, look at what you're working with. An outdated format that even in it's hay day sounded like crap. Tweak away me hardies...it's never gonna sound right. Just keep spending, spending, spending. What really cracks me up is the insane money you spend for a record cleaner. Damn, my gold plated kitchen DW didn't even cost that much. Oh, & by the way, when do you actualy sit & listen to anything? You don't cause you're always putzing with your out dated TT trying to make it sound good. It is a rarity for most seasoned vinyl junkies to complain about dialing in an analog rig so can the complaining crap. I think I just posted my very first baffling issue in 25 years.
I'll take the occasional tick and pop and sacrifice that black backround that you get with digital for the depth of soundstage, the precise inner detail imaging, the natural openness, natural sound and wide sound stage that a record produces any day over the flat one dimentional, digital grungy image that digital portrays unless of course you have a $7K Musical Fidelity Tri Vista SACD player then you are talking another ball game.
If digital is so good why is vinyl making a resounding comeback and the record companies such as Atlantic are issuing 10K minimum vinyl pressings of new and old recordings and artists? -

Hey Joe,
Speaking about vinyl making a big come back, you are 100% correct. I stopped in my local Goodwill store today to take a peek. They were flooded with vinyl. Not one CD in sight. Gee, I wonder why???? But not to fret, I picked you up a nice album for my trip down on Sunday. What did you get?
I was at Goodwill last week and thanks to goof balls like you I did a pickup of around 50 mint LPs for less than $5. BTW there were quite a few boxes of CDs but because they are so small and the artwork and packaging on them sucks it seemed there were less of them than there were LPs but of course that is just an optical illusions. There were 6 people looking through the LPs and two 8 year olds looking through the CDs. Hmmmm . . . -

The posts on the Polk Forum never cease to amaze me. I can't help but wonder if some of these are based on experience or just opinion.
Each media type has it strengths and weaknesses. Precluding one limits recording you might never hear on the other. Unfortunately for both of the media in question, the more money invested, the better the end result.
Can we now get back to addressing the issue at hand...All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed, second it is violently opposed and third, it is accepted as self evident. -
