Are cardinals truly aggressive? I've never seen them behave that way around here.

Remind me to tell you about crazy aggressive cardinals the next time we
    talk.

Lou Brock was pretty aggressive at stealing bases and he was a Cardinal. :|

How aggressive are cardinals? At least twice a year I’ll get dive bombed by a cardinal through my deer blind window. It took me awhile to figure out what provoked the attack. The attacks happened when I was using my big Sony digital camera or binoculars. The flash of the glass lens attracted the cardinals in defense. That picture is pretty accurate but does not show the brown spot in the photographers drawers…don’t ask how I know

I've actually never jumped a starter with a screwdriver, but have spent enough days, eves and late, late nights under cars and trucks in weather I'd cower from these days for the sake of maintenance, engine builds and such, out of hobby and/or necessity in my earlier days to at least know what this is.

What was that trick supposed to fix, anyway?
Was it for a bad solenoid or something?

Screw drivers and a hammer were mandatory in some of my old rides.
The screw driver jumped the two wires that connects the starter solenoid, the hammer was to pound on the starter to loosen the brushes just enough to get you a few more starts.

Yes, a BFH was involved more often than not back in the day.

We had a store kind of like that at our house while Harpo lived there. ;)

It might not be a great idea on modern cars.
Add just about every shade tree meechanic
trick to that list. Even jumper cables can screw
up a modern car. I gave up and bought a jump
    box.

I've always thought that hedgehogs were very cute except that they go the-thump the-thump on your car tire when you run them over.

Ivan's got it! The hammer could help a worn and pitted solenoid make contact or help them worn out brushes contact the armature. The big screwdriver is used when the hammer didn't work. :D It helped to be fast, committed and forceful to avoid lots of sparks and get a good connection. A good, insulated handle was a plus.
