From my son's garden. He wanted a garden as a end of the school year gift. Beans, cucumbers, peas, yellow peppers and jalapenos.

Those are beautiful looking beans. I'm cooking them in my head with some shallots, bacon and some parmigiano reggiano and drooling like Homer.

    Gorgeous sunflower, too.
We're getting to the end of the line, bean-wise.
We've frozen a bunch for the cold, dark winter -- but we've eaten a bunch, too.
Can't beat fresh green beans. :)

This was the first time we had a bigger garden. My son who is 8 said "I want a garden as my end of the year gift" We said for sure. Beats a stupid toy you'll play with for a month then forget about. So we found a place in the back yard where it would have the most sun. Went to the store he chose his seeds. He helped me dig up the area and carry the bags of earth and dump them. Then he planted 2-6 seeds of each. Well I've never had cucs before and they took over the garden. So I had to trim some back so the others could get some light. Cucs are doing well. Peas not so much he only got 2 pods and we shared them raw. The beans just started a couple weeks ago. Those were the first pickings. He has these giant green peppers which are to turn yellow but we don't know when, they are very slow at turning yellow. Yesterday I found his first chili pepper. We are now on our 3 tomato. Shared one and the other two are still growing. My daughter (6) planted 2 sunflowers in a large pot. Next spring we want to make the garden much bigger and now that I know cuc plants go nuts we will ease off on how many we plant. My son (and we) think it's very cool he can go pick food for dinner or his lunch, right in the backyard.

    ^^^ Stupendous!

    [ego-centric aside]
I guess we have a love/hate relationship with vegetable gardening. I love it in the spring, prepping the beds and planting. I/we don't love it so much in hot, hot weather when it needs weeding and other attention. We love it in the later summer, when we start getting plenty of wonderful food to eat -- but then I don't love it so much at the end of the season when it starts to get ahead of us (more stuff than we can, or feel like, harvesting) and the first frost looms on the horizon.

That's why most go to the store for their veggies Doc. Difference is, obviously, your not getting the added chemicals/roundup on yours.

Some by me have small hobby farms, 5-10 acres. They grow for personal consumption. Sometimes they have more than they can handle and simply put boxes out by the road with signage telling people to take what they can use for free.

No sense throwing it out, letting it spoil in the fields.

as an aside -- it was pretty here last night, albeit briefly, after a rainy day followed by sudden clearing a bit before sunset...

  • Went for a drive this morning exploring near Crawford Colorado. We stopped in a little cemetery in town and paid our respects to someone a lot of you might recognize. Joe loved it here. In 1994 he built a beautiful mansion just outside of town on 200+ acres and lived here until he passed away in 2014. R I P Joe.

from my Flikr feed -- this photographer makes the rounds of my kind of high-end shows, get-togethers, and cabals :)

I have no idea what this is, but it's alluring.

    Anybody know what it is?

FWIW... it looks, to me, like the weird hybrid offspring of an older Clearaudio turntable and a late 1950s VM ("The Voice of Music") record changer. B) The arm doesn't look like either (to me, at least), though :p
