They should be giving them for free just like they give away free satellite dishes and cell phones, the money is in the subscriptions. Offer me a free tuner with a 1 year commitment to satellite radio and I might bite. I'm betting that will be the standard soon anyway.
WTF?
Someone like Polk should make a very nice XM tuna spending money on R&D for an improved power supply / AD converter. Getting nothing from XM them selfs, maybe even spending money on the XM name or something else. Then sell it for nothing or close to it.
This is not a cell service selling you a cell phone.
Sorry sell your Polks go back to Wally World buy your Bose.

I guess it will be either the $ 269 (even at Crutchfield) or the $200 at the bay...._________________________________________________

Difference being that Polk isn't in the sattelite bidness nor does XM seem to be in the tuna sales bidness......so, when you get a free tuna with your subscription, one of the same quality of the Polk model, you just let me know.

Good, I won't. Sprint or Cingular or AT&T isn't in the phone making business either, they buy their phones from quality companies and give them away or sell them at a discount with a commitment to use their service. Think they are in the charity business? Try cancelling early. Last time I checked you could get some pretty good quality phones at a lot less than what they would cost if you walked into phones-r-us and tried to buy one outright. I guess that's the free tuna. Sucking up to any one company isn't going to change the market dynamics one bit. I have 5 Polk products sitting in my living room that doesn't mean I'm going to run out and buy a 6th just to get the name. -

Ode, you just don't get it, do you!?! Cell phone and satellite companies are going to make money off you when you use their services, so they can afford to discount the hardware. Polk isn't making one penny from XM subscriptions. Is that clear enough??? If you want to **** about it, talk to XM and maybe they will buy a Polk tuna for you if you sign a ten year deal, but I wouldn't hold your breath.Political Correctness'.........defined

If you did not want to keep Matt Polk's generous gift to you then why accept it in the first place? Its not liked they were wrapped up and a mystery package. Dont want it, send it back, or at least ask his permission to sell/give it away.

When XM satellite radio is in the same demand as cell phone service, you g'head and let me know. THEN you may have a valid point. Also, the 'free' phones are of SUBSTANTIALLY less quality than those that other pay for ( I have a cheapie freebie) so if you want to apply your logic, you still would pay for the Polk tuna.
I'm not sucking up to anyone nor am I a schill for Polk. When I don't like one of thier products, I say so (see Polk Surround Bar thread). I also own a LOT of other brands of gear to include speakers so if you want to try and make assumptions about me, at least do a *little* homework next time.
Keep practicing, it's the only way to Carnegie Hall.....

Personally I would think Matt would rather see them get used as opposed to sitting in a corner collecting dust.
Had I been one of the lucky travelers to get one of those XM reference tuners....It would sit in a place of prominence in my rack...EVEN IF I NEVER hooked up to XM. It would always be a reminder of the wonderful trip to the Great Maryland Polkfest of 2005...dust and all....plus it's a lot better looking than a Polk logo coffee mug...."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

Nobody is bagging on HTrookie, in fact....I don't see anyone that's mentioned his name at all in a negative light.
Let's just say I spared someone some serious ebarassment by saying what we were all thinking.
So let's not make up some bashing that didn't occur or act as if someone was making HIM out to be a badguy. -

No.....I am not taking it like that, and am not sorry for starting this thread....but...I AM REALLY SORRY I DID NOT PLACE AN ORDER LAST NIGHT
Talking about bad karma.....yesterday this thing was $269 EVERYWHERE..even Circuit City... AND TODAY IT's GONE Still shows at 269 in some search engines, but when you go in the store it's GONE...even Polk has it a t 269..but then you get into Crutchfield and it's back at 299...
I'M PISSED!!!!
I was about to place an order last night, but I guess I didn't want to push it..... so..here I am thinking I just lost 30 bucks..or thinking on e-bay.....
hmmm...I've heard that Polk gives some discounts to club members..would this also apply for purchases to Crutchfield through Polk??? Who should I contact to find out????

My my, such hostility. Anytime you want my address just send me a PM, big boy, I'm easy access from Hartsfield airport. Obviously I'm one of those people, and you can bet that there are millions of me, who think that paying for radio is a joke and paying a lot of money for a gadget that gives me the privilege of paying for radio isn't going to happen. I also happen to have teenaged children who would actually make their beds for an Ipod but have never once begged for the chance to go out and buy a radio that lets you pay for radio. XM may survive off of early adopters but in order to thrive they will have to convince the unenlightened (that's me) that paying for radio is actually worth it. $269 tuners are like $15000 plasma tvs, someday we will laugh at the fact that somebody would actually pay that kind of money. Nice thing about this site is they keep a pretty lengthy archive so when we see them selling for $49.95 at Frys I can look you up and thank you for supporting the industry in its infancy. I'm sure it's a quality product and some day it may sit right alongside my $1800 HK receiver and my $1200 worth of Polk speakers that I bought for $499 and $280 brand new. Have a great day -

We get it, XM isn't your cup of tea. Fine don't buy it. Nobody cares.
What about cable TV? You pay for that? The cable company give you a free TV? Imagine those **** at DirectTV and Comcast charging you for it.
I see you are online, can't believe anyone would pay for online service....especially if they don't give you a computer for free.
Gas sucks too, I'm personally waiting for Sunoco to send me my free car.
You see, ode, not ALL business fit into your little cell phone business model.
For me? I listen to music far more than I watch the idiot box. So, ten bucks a month for XM for a hundred or so different channels with few interuptions, I can live with it.
Gee, you got a HK receiver and some Polk speakers for about 800 bucks. Hmmmm, for much less bagged a Conrad Johnson tube amplifier and a pair of Polk SDA's and still had a couple hundred left over.
Keep practicing, cochise, it's the only way to get to Carnegie Hall.

This is great, I'm finally starting to wake up this morning, Thanks for the entertainment guys!
Ode, quit digging. There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin -
HTrookie- Email Polk about it. Their website still says it should be 269.99, but you're right... when you add it to the cart it goes up. I'm sure they'll straighten things out if you email or call...Ludicrous gibs!

Placed an order for $269 including shiping at MICROWISE......only place that still has it at that price....am a little concerned because it is not a known site........I took my risk and will just wait and see....._________________________________________________

Obviously you do, you're taking quite a bit of your valuable time to lecture me about it.What about cable TV? You pay for that? The cable company give you a free TV? Imagine those **** at DirectTV and Comcast charging you for it.
No I don't pay for it and they do offer all sorts of incentives, especially in areas where 2 or 3 cable/dish companies compete. Same with ISPs so I don't have to repeat your same tired line again. I only rent movies I don't have cable or satellite. But if I did there are plenty of deals for me.I see you are online, can't believe anyone would pay for online service....especially if they don't give you a computer for free.
see above, for someone talking about Carnegie Hall you sure come up with a lot of dumb examples. Gas companies aren't trying to get you to buy new technology, neither are isps. They give incentives based on competition, understand? You see, ode, not ALL business fit into your little cell phone business model.
No fooling. But I was talking XM you're the one rambling.Gee, you got a HK receiver and some Polk speakers for about 800 bucks. Hmmmm, for much less bagged a Conrad Johnson tube amplifier and a pair of Polk SDA's and still had a couple hundred left over.
No I listened to the sound of the free market talking. Somebody at Polk decided that a pair of their speakers was worth $600+. The free market collectively howled with laughter so next thing you know they are at Frys for $140. Same thing with the HK, if people were scrambling to buy the last ones at $1800 then you wouldn't have seen them for $499. It wasn't a matter of combing every want ad and flea market on the planet looking for a deal, the deal came to me. My opinion is that you will see the same forces working on the satellite radio industry. You want to pay top dollar for something be my guest. My argument is that every new technology has come down in price and so will this one. They may use incentives, they may not time will tell.Keep practicing, cochise, it's the only way to get to Carnegie Hall.
BDT
I'll keep that in mind. In the meantime I have logic like yours to inspire me
