It just seems stupid to me that people actually stayed. If someone wants to stay, I'm not sure what the government could have done, but I think everybody should have evacuated.
excellent point. But many people couldn't evacuate. Many are homeless, or so poor that they don't have modes for transportation. The city officials of New Orleans did a horrible job of preparing early- no buses for evacuation, nothing. Only resources after the storm has hit- well over 1,000 people are believed dead now.
It's not as simple as saying either you evacuate, or you don't. -
Spawndn72 wrote:Not exactly, most of the experts have always said that if a major hurricane hit New Orleans that it would be catasrophic. They were saying it on the weather channel two days before it made landfall.
exactly. And the city officials of New Orleans were sitting on their ****. -

Iraq War Vs. Levies in New Orleans
I'm not seeing the comparison, pal.
You people are just sickening, honestly. Logic and Fact? Where is the logic and where are your facts?
All I see is a whole lot of Left Wing hot air. Whole lotta whining and a real lack of solutions.
Also, have you heard of linear thought? Trying to relate the disaster in New Orleans to the Iraq war to George Bush is quite the stretch I guess only a true quack would understand. Lets try to stick with one topic rathe than trying to muddy it up with your sever lack of facts. I mean, if we didn't piss away millions of dollars on useless social programs there might be more money for the levies in New Orleans. See how stupid that is and how it has NOTHING to do with the topic at hand?
Demirge- you and Wal need to take this somewhere else. Seriously. If you're going to start calling people names based on their political affiliations then you just need to stop posting. And Wal's comment blaming it on Bush and Republicans or whatever is just as arrogant and mindless. -

Directing this back away from politics... I think we can all agree that a lot of people dropped the ball and are continuing to drop the ball. exactly my friend. Those that evacuated could. The city did little to help those that couldn't. Look at all the bodies. -
80% of 500,000 leaves 100,000 left there to try and survive and that seems just about the right number that were left behind, too."SOME PEOPLE CALL ME MAURICE,

Let's face the facts...
Yes there are quite a few that did not have the means to evacuate, but there are quite a few that chose to stay. Why they would do so is beyond my ability to comprehend. Now I'm not saying that those who stayed willingly don't need our help, but it makes you wonder what in the hell they were thinking....
Hmmm, everyone's leaving....Naw, I'll tough it out.
Too bad there's no positive means of identifying those that ignored the warnings and put their sorry asses to work on a few thousand handpumps. Stupidity should be painful. -

First off ya wanna know whos fault it is that NO is wrecked? God! You want to blame somebody, quit looking for a scapegoat and blame God. If he hadnt sent the hurricane to NO then none of this wouldve happened. As stupid as that would be it makes more sense trying to blame the President or the mayor or governor of Louisiana.
And as for W being to blame for the levys not being built right, thats the stupidest, lamest and most desperate attempt to smear W Ive ever seen. If the levys were all effed up then why didnt they fix em when Clinton was president? Hmmm? Also, why is it the federal governments responsibility to fund NO's levy building project? The levy failed because it was only built to withstand a category 3 hurricane, not a 5. Thats out of the mouths of the mayor, and commander of the Corps of Engineers. They didnt say one thing about not having enough money cause the evil Bush was diverting funds to make Halliburton rich. Ahhhh, I get it now! Its brilliant. W diverted funds knowing that a hurricane would wipe out the town so now he can hire Halliburton to rebuild the town! Its all so clear now!
NO has been around well over a century, and to blame a guy, whos been in office for a little over 4 years and whos policies have been in effect for less than 4 years, for NO being underwater right now is shameless.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

can we remember that the money that was redirected from the magical "levy fund" would not have made much of a difference anyway.
lets do the math boys and girls
1 city 10-20 feet below sea level
+ 1 category 5 f#cking hurricane
flooding
not bush's fault, not Clinton's fault, not the governor of Mississippi (dont laugh, RFK jr said that, just when you though a Kennedy couldnt mess up their legacy any more...)

The real problem is that a group of people (actually a couple of generations of people) have been subsidized by the fed. and state gov'ts. by way of welfare and ss payments to not be self sufficient or self thinkers. Look at history if a region couldn't support a given population(think food ,resources, and jobs) people would move to a more hospitable area.
Welfare has taken care of that though, hell if you can't use your own skills to stay alive (income) the gov't's right there to prop you up. Sorry, but that's what you got here those that decided to stay, for the most part, appear to be able bodied enough to loot and steal and move around the city now at will.
Sorry again but given the fact that if there wasn't a hand out on the 15th and 30th every month most of the habitually non working wouldn't be around.
I've seen enough here to be fed up with the excuse that the majority of those that chose not to leave before the storm couldn't ,looks more like wouldn't and for good reason.......self profit..
Feel sorry for the people who chose to stay and help they're getting the shaft! -

jesus christ man. That's BRILLIANT! EVERY SINGLE PERSON THAT'S STUCK IN THAT HELLHOLE STAYED SO THEY COULD LOOT. EVERYONE.
You're a heartless individual. If you were stuck in that hellhole and I was armchair quarterbacking the scenario I would feel more pity for you. A human being.
(edit) keep up with the social stereotypes. you're really good at it. -
I still maintain that nobody really thought there would be this much devestation. Nobody ever thinks its gonna happen to you and this is just another hurricane. Im sure there were people giving proper warnings but the first I even heard this storm was bad was when it was about to make landfall. Before that all I ever heard was it was pretty big and will cause a mess. I never once heard anybody say that NO is doomed.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

Reread that paragraph..... never said everyone. Never said i didn't have compassion for those who physically or financially couldn't leave just the groups that are ransacking the city. I was here in Charleston for Hugo a nasty storm and not as devastating as this one but pretty serious. I chose not to leave and stayed to help clean up afterward .Never once felt the urge to loot or shoot at the very people who came to help us out. -

It's been a very long day/week for everyone, including all of us lucky ones that don't have to live through the hell the folks in the Gulf Coast region are living thru as we speak. Tempers have flaired and opinions have been noted. I think we all need to kick back for a while and think about how lucky we all really are to live where we do. All the rhetoric even had me involved in a little tiff this morning and I try as hard as I can to be non-confrontational. Anyways, its been a very long day and I'm going to head home, warm up some tubes and stay away from the tv for at least one night, because when I get up tommorrow morning it'll all be right back in my face. Good night to all my fellow Cpers and say a prayer, if that's your thing, for all the displaced souls and the people that lost everything these last few days."SOME PEOPLE CALL ME MAURICE,

Well I'm reflecting back on today a little bit and it seems that everyone I came in contact with today is just a bit more on edge than usual. Not including this forum. Gotta' think it is due to the current events going on in the south. It's just a bit unnerving to say the least.suds, suds and more suds!
