excellent point. But many people couldn't evacuate. Many are homeless, or so poor that they don't have modes for transportation. The city officials of New Orleans did a horrible job of preparing early- no buses for evacuation, nothing. Only resources after the storm has hit- well over 1,000 people are believed dead now.

It's not as simple as saying either you evacuate, or you don't.

According to this article , he thought "80%" had evacuated...

Directing this back away from politics... I think we can all agree that a lot of people dropped the ball and are continuing to drop the ball. Oh and the residents of NO for damn sure aren't doing themselves any favors here. Again, I'm astounded by the stupidity on every level.

exactly my friend. Those that evacuated could. The city did little to help those that couldn't. Look at all the bodies.

80% of 500,000 leaves 100,000 left there to try and survive and that seems just about the right number that were left behind, too.

Yes there are quite a few that did not have the means to evacuate, but there are quite a few that chose to stay. Why they would do so is beyond my ability to comprehend. Now I'm not saying that those who stayed willingly don't need our help, but it makes you wonder what in the hell they were thinking....

First off ya wanna know whos fault it is that NO is wrecked? God! You want to blame somebody, quit looking for a scapegoat and blame God. And as for W being to blame for the levys not being built right, thats the stupidest, lamest and most desperate attempt to smear W Ive ever seen. If the levys were all effed up then why didnt they fix em when Clinton was president? Hmmm? Also, why is it the federal governments responsibility to fund NO's levy building project? The levy failed because it was only built to withstand a category 3 hurricane, not a 5. Thats out of the mouths of the mayor, and commander of the Corps of Engineers. They didnt say one thing about not having enough money cause the evil Bush was diverting funds to make Halliburton rich. Ahhhh, I get it now! Its brilliant. W diverted funds knowing that a hurricane would wipe out the town so now he can hire Halliburton to rebuild the town! Its all so clear now!

NO has been around well over a century, and to blame a guy, whos been in office for a little over 4 years and whos policies have been in effect for less than 4 years, for NO being underwater right now is shameless.

The real problem is that a group of people (actually a couple of generations of people) have been subsidized by the fed. and state gov'ts. by way of welfare and ss payments to not be self sufficient or self thinkers. Look at history if a region couldn't support a given population(think food ,resources,and jobs) people would move to a more hospitable area.
Welfare has taken care of that though, hell if you can't use your own skills to stay alive (income) the gov't's right there to prop you up. Sorry, but that's what you got here those that decided to stay, for the most part, appear to be able bodied enough to loot and steal and move around the city now at will.
Sorry again but given the fact that if there wasn't a hand out on the 15th and 30th every month most of the habitually non working wouldn't be around.
I've seen enough here to be fed up with the excuse that the majority of those that chose not to leave before the storm couldn't ,looks more like wouldn't and for good reason.......self profit..
Feel sorry for the people who chose to stay and help they're getting the shaft!

jesus christ man. That's BRILLIANT! EVERY SINGLE PERSON THAT'S STUCK IN THAT HELLHOLE STAYED SO THEY COULD LOOT. EVERYONE.

You're a heartless individual. If you were stuck in that hellhole and I was armchair quarterbacking the scenario I would feel more pity for you. A human being.

I still maintain that nobody really thought there would be this much devestation. Nobody ever thinks its gonna happen to you and this is just another hurricane. Im sure there were people giving proper warnings but the first I even heard this storm was bad was when it was about to make landfall. Before that all I ever heard was it was pretty big and will cause a mess. I never once heard anybody say that NO is doomed.

Reread that paragraph..... never said everyone. Never said i didn't have compassion for those who physically or financially couldn't leave just the groups that are ransacking the city. I was here in Charleston for Hugo a nasty storm and not as devastating as this one but pretty serious. I chose not to leave and stayed to help clean up afterward .Never once felt the urge to loot or shoot at the very people who came to help us out.

i would like to make an apology to the entire forum for making a political statement. if i knew that all the fighting and name calling was going to happen i would have kept my thoughts to myself. i feel sorry for the dead and the dying and any children that are caught up in this nightmare. the whole situation down there is beyond crazy.i will refrain from making any political statements in the future. again sorry for stirring the pot at club polk. sincerly William C Waldecker III

It's been a very long day/week for everyone, including all of us lucky ones that don't have to live through the hell the folks in the Gulf Coast region are living thru as we speak. Tempers have flaired and opinions have been noted. I think we all need to kick back for a while and think about how lucky we all really are to live where we do. All the rhetoric even had me involved in a little tiff this morning and I try as hard as I can to be non-confrontational. Anyways, its been a very long day and I'm going to head home, warm up some tubes and stay away from the tv for at least one night, because when I get up tommorrow morning it'll all be right back in my face. Good night to all my fellow Cpers and say a prayer, if that's your thing, for all the displaced souls and the people that lost everything these last few days.

Well I'm reflecting back on today a little bit and it seems that everyone I came in contact with today is just a bit more on edge than usual. Not including this forum. Gotta' think it is due to the current events going on in the south. It's just a bit unnerving to say the least.
