To actually believe that one man is responsible is simply rediculous. This is a natural disaster, act of God, a result of global warming, etc, etc, etc. Name one person that could have prevented any of whats happening.

I'm so sick of morons going so far as to blame George Bush for a G'Damn hurricane. It's like a Republican blaming Bill Clinton for the Hurricane. It's insane no matter what your political leanings.

In something that isn't even remotely political to drag politics into this is moronic. It's also such a stupid comment that bothering to try and type out a serious response to it is completely laughable.

If you want to blame people you might ask why the N.O. PD took off and ran like they did, not like the Firefighters and NYPD responded to 9/11. Why the hell the Civil Engineer and City Planners allowed building to continue on wetlands. Even that is petty as hell. This is a natural disaster. All you can do now is salvage what's left, which is nothing but human life at this point and not put yourself in the position to have the same thing happen again.

So, Eff him. I don't care if anyone agrees with me or not.

While I don't agree with the rest of W Waldecker's post, it would have made sense if we had made more of an effort to evacuate people. It just seems stupid to me that people actually stayed. If someone wants to stay, I'm not sure what the government could have done, but I think everybody should have evacuated.

Agreed, that first sentence is off the wall. I interpreted the rest that much more could have been done after the fact. I still don't understand why so much of our National Guard is in Iraq to begin with fighting a war.

Why? Hurricanes come thru and slam into cities all the time. How could anybody know that the freaking levys were going to give way in 4 places?

I mean cat 5 hurricanes slam Florida almost weekly and its never anything like this. Everybody, including the residents, figured it would come thru, kick their asses and move on then they would all come out of shelter, start the cleanup and move on. Nobody couldve forseen this.

Well, for starters, the area is below sea-level. I just don't think it makes sense to sit around in the middle of a hurricane.

Not exactly, most of the experts have always said that if a major hurricane hit New Orleans that it would be catasrophic. They were saying it on the weather channel two days before it made landfall.

Actually, for the past few years US army corp funds that would have been going to reinforcing the levies were redirected to the Iraq war. Several years ago FEMA listed the top 3 most likely disasters in the US: Terrorists in NY, Hurricane in new orleans and an earthquake in SF. The new orleans news papers have been repeatedly bitching about how they'd lost all their funds to Iraq and that the next cat 3+ hurricane that hit would put them under.

    So:
1)A lot of people had a good idea that the levies would break and the funds were very directly shifted from the N.O. levy projects to Iraq. This is all in the public record, look it up.
2)If you believe that the Iraq war was truly optional, then you have to hold Bush somewhat accountable for the levies breaking. He's not accountable for any hurricanes and only the way-lefty-global-warming-koyoto-protocol nuts are going to blame a hurricane on him. On the other hand, if we weren't in Iraq, more money would have been spent on the levies over the last few years and they might have held... and the nation would also have a quarter of a trillion dollars more to spend on cleaning it up.

That's not politics, just logic & facts. Now, whether Iraq was optional is gonna turn into a political discussion, so I'm even going to get into that.

What the flying eff are you talking about?

Iraq War Vs. Levies in New Orleans

I'm not seeing the comparison, pal.

You people are just sickening, honestly. Logic and Fact? Where is the logic and where are your facts?

All I see is a whole lot of Left Wing hot air. Whole lotta whining and a real lack of solutions.

Also, have you heard of linear thought? Trying to relate the disaster in New Orleans to the Iraq war to George Bush is quite the stretch I guess only a true quack would understand. Lets try to stick with one topic rathe than trying to muddy it up with your sever lack of facts. I mean, if we didn't piss away millions of dollars on useless social programs there might be more money for the levies in New Orleans. See how stupid that is and how it has NOTHING to do with the topic at hand?

Demi - I'm guessing you didn't actually read his post. I didn't know anything about funds being redirected, but given that they are/were directed to the war with Iraq, that relates the two. If you don't see the connection...

A lot of left wing hot air? He never made any conclusions based on the facts nor did he bring any politics into it.

Yeah, that has nothing to do with it. However, (assuming what unc2701 said is right), funds that were going toward the levies have been redirected toward the war in Iraq. Thus, they're are directly related, unlike you're example.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH GUYS AND GALS.

Let's end all of this **** fighting and bickering amongst ourselves. It's not helping anyone in the hurricane stricken areas or us for that matter. All this is doing is getting friends at each others throats. If we want to help, then let's figure out a way to get the supplies that are already down there to the people in need.

It appears that the money has been moved in the president’s budget to handle homeland security and the war in Iraq, and I suppose that’s the price we pay. Nobody locally is happy that the levees can’t be finished, and we are doing everything we can to make the case that this is a security issue for us.

-- Walter Maestri, emergency management chief for Jefferson Parish, Louisiana; New Orleans Times-Picayune, June 8, 2004.

Again, it hinges on whether you believe Iraq was optional, but there's a whole series of articles in the NO papers going back about 2 years saying how the Iraq war was pulling funds off the corp of engineers levy project. Seriously, I'm not off my rocker, go look it up. I'm not making any crazy lefty statements here, dude... lighten up.

Edit: sorry posted at the same time as ND13, I'm with him, make whatever you want of the situation.

Oh, I didn't read his post? Oh, okay, thanks for pointing that out.

First of all, to even accpet the premise of his stupid comments one would have to believe that the Iraq war was absolutely 100% unjust, which I don't believe is true and neither does the vocal majority of this board.

Secondly you're playing monday morning quarterback here. I, as you may or may not have read in other posts, think that the city of New Orleans was always a disaster waiting to happen. With that said nobody could have predicted what was going to happen to the T. Floods, sure, but a disaster like this? Nobody could be sure. Much like nobody could have predicted that some suicidal arabs were going to slam a few planes into our buildings.

Oh, and he didn't bring politics into it? Really? Something tells me audiobliss that you side with the Bush bashing crowd if you couldn't see how thick his post was with the innuendos.

Much like I'm sure you can see I **** hate Liberals.

If I missed the politics in his post, that's because I'm a 17 year old not adept at analyzing such situations. I'm as pro-Bush as anyone in the US. I'm also for this war. I just don't see how his post was slanted by his political views. Again, I guess I just missed it.

I agree that having a city below sea level and next to the ocean does not soud like a smart idea.

Let's let this one rest, shall we?
