    It is so easy with ss hardware (even today) to cook driver or output devices, and/or to deliver the DC rail voltages to the poor, innocent, unsuspecting loudspeakers.

    No, not really. A whole generation of missiles used vacuum tubes, and several generations of Soviet aircraft did, as well. And -- heck! -- hydrogen bombs still do! Yes, even today.

    It may be an old wives' tale -- I believe it, though :)

    Vacuum tubes do tend to be substantially more robust with respect to things like poorly regulated voltage, voltage spikes, high current, etc. compared to soiled solid state devices.

    The MU6900, a 5687 on steroids. ModWright built gear using the 5687 tube.

    Formerly known as Bendix 6900, until MU Engineering bought the Bendix Redbank Tube Division. They rebranded existing stock and continued to manufacture tubes using the Bendix tooling. Used in ICBM's.

    Near twice the transconductance of the 5687, had a max altitude of 80,000 feet and able to withstand a 500G impact shock with 50G of vibrational acceleration.

    My bud Norm (RIP) and I had purchased some Bendix 6900 reasonably when we came upon some MU6900's. I did some research. At the time, some didn't know MU had bought the Redbank Division and sold the MU's real cheap. Bendix could go for $600 a pair, the MU's, $200-$300 a pair. They looked and sounded identical so we sold the Bendix.

    Now there's a robust tube! 5692, a ruggedized 6SN7, double mica on top, better posts and interfaces (bushings) to the mica, designed to withstand military use! And the perils of today's shipping! :smile:

    Just what you need to get that nuke tipped Redstone, you got stashed in the barn, up and going. I grew up under the Omaha's SAC Offutt AFB's radiation umbrella.
