    So today is tube checker day. Gonna check out the tester. Kinda nervous actually, as I have never done this before. My memories of checking tubes was going with my dad to the drugstore and watching him, but not really paying attention.

    I was eyeing the candy aisle of course! :)

    So I picked a couple of known good tubes, and ones that would not upset me too bad if I accidentally fried em!

    EH 6SN7
    Conn 12AU7

    First the 6SN7. The included booklet has the settings as shown. Even the booklet is military grade, waterproofed, and thicker stock paper.

    Power the tester on, let it warm up for a few minutes, triple check the settings, and pop the tube in! Let the tube warm up for a few minutes too.

    Woohoo! I get a reading! Based on that, triode #1 is cranking out 1750 Gm, about average for a NOS tube. So far, so good! :)

    So who said there is no drama in the tube testing world? :)

    As many of you know, and what I do as an engineer at work, is not rely on a single test to make a decision about how a product performs. This could be the new parts that I am testing, or in other cases, the test set-up. Or even the test equipment.

    We rely on tests results that can be repeated, with as many samples as possible, to ensure we have the best correlation between predicted values and actual test values.

    Well, to a lesser degree, I used the same strategy on my newly acquired tester!

    And, well, my results were, a bit wonky! :smile:

    I re-tested the same tubes, again, and again, and got nothing! The indicator dial started acting a bit jerky, and then, zero. Repeat, same result.

    So I tested a few more 6SN7's and 12AU7's (all known good tubes), zilch, zero, nada.

    Sent a e-mail to the seller, offered his phone number, and we chatted for a bit. Got a good feeling during the conversation, as he was very apologetic, and proclaimed that this unit was just recently serviced and calibrated. He has done work with the famous Dan Nelson of Hickock calibration fame, but found a local guy (Columbus, OH area) that he claims does great work! Uh huh.

    He offered to pay for my return shipping, take it back to his service guy, ensure nothing was damaged or got loose during shipping, and return the unit back to me. All at his cost. If after I get the unit back, and still not satisfied, will refund me in full. Sounds good so far.

    I agreed, and will return the unit back to him this week. We'll see.

    And the drama continues! :)

    ^^^ So this sounds like the fuel gauge in my 2007 Buick Rainier (only 64K on vehicle). In the past month the gauge goes from E to F and back <-> several times every few minutes while driving. I know this is a known GM faulty part. Why couldn't a corp. like GM with over 100 years of experience design a reliable fuel gauge or sending unit in the tank? Sounds like your Hickok Tube tester is doing the same thing. Can I send my used SUV back for repair? ;)

    Probably the stepper motor in the Instrument Cluster is failing. Yes a known issue, GM had a recall or service bulletion out there IIRC on a lot of vehicles back in the day, as the stepper motors were widely used. Not really a design issue, but a supplier quality issue (they are purchased directly from a Tier2 supplier). Any warranty costs incurred by GM would be billed back to the supplier.

    A few suppliers actually went bankrupt due to the charge back costs. In those cases GM would have to eat the bill.

    My 2004 SSR (less than 2000 miles) has the same issue.

    There are refurbish companies out there that will re-build your cluster, replace all the stepper motors, not just the failed one, for not a lot of money.

    I would not have a dealer swap out the cluster with an OEM one, as there is no guarantee the replacement would be any better. If they have it in stock of course. Dealers would probably just sent it out to one of the refurbish companies anyway in that case.

    Verb, thank you very much for your reply, I was being a little too funny. I understand the part was made by another firm (supplier), I'm not sure what Tier2 means. As complicated as these vehicles are anymore, the manufacturer can't make every little piece, but they should somehow test the parts in advance, which I'm sure there is some process in place for. Not my area of expertise. I hope your tube tester comes back fixed, you've spent a lot of time with it so far.

    No worries brother! My SSR got me a bit frustrated because the speedo died, then the fuel gauge, ugh. Prior to their death they did exactly as you described. I use my phone now as a speedo, and the fuel range function still works.

    I don't drive that thing that much, but I'll get it fixed eventually. Most likely I'll pull the cluster out myself and send it to a shop, but the removal process on that thing is a bit of a pain.

    Oh, Tier 2 is just another term for a supplier of a supplier! They supply the stepper motors to the instrument cluster supplier (Tier 1) who ships directly to us (OEM).

    So it's probably the gauge stepper motor in the dash rather than the sending unit piece in the fuel tank?

    My speedo is fine. If you have a portable Garmin it will post your speed too.

    I've got an old Hickok 600 that was given to me decades ago.
    I need to update and calibrate it ( recap)
    It seems to work ok. If a tube has issues, it will tell me.
    But as far as tube relative health, most likely a bit iffy.
    I did replace the power cord, since all the insulation was crumbling off.
    Cleaning switches is always a good idea on anything this old.
