    Tapped each one of relays. While the unit was on (yes I know). And tapped each one of them a little more aggressively unpowered and removed from the rack. Nada.

    Man, that sux....I never had any issues with it....so does it go through the normal delay start with the blinking light, then does it click or no click after the delay?

    Did you try the second pair of output RCA's?

    Hey no worries. Yep normal startup. Flashing light stops, but no discernible click. I do get an intermittent clicking after it’s on though.

    Thanks Jesse! Now I gotta decide if I'm up to the challenge of replacing em. I've done some rudimentary soldering back in the day, and present, but not sure I have the confidence to mess with such an exqusite (and expensive) piece of gear! :smile:

    Piece of cake. You'll have to remove the selector pot extension collar and the support. Then loosen the board by freeing up all the RCA jacks then flip it up to access the back of it. You will not have to desolder any of the leads going to the board. Use a rag to support the board inside the case, then get to work replacing the relays. You will need a good solder sucker.

    Just watch a few soldering/desoldering videos on YouTube.

    Take your time, go slow, and make sure you don't go aggressively too hot or too conservatively cold with your iron when soldering.

    My 12 year old nephew taught himself to solder using YouTube videos and some advice from me and now the kid can solder PC board stuff with the naked eye...my old a$$ has to use a magnifying glass.

    So today, @GlennDog heard my plight (no tube pre, the world is ending) :smile: and offered up his absolutely beautiful Cary SLP-98 tube pre, as a loaner, while the VTL is going under repairs!

    All I can say is wow! Thanks very much Dog!

    This is one of the reasons (among many) as to why CP is such an awesome place. It's about helping each other out, in times of need.

    Hmm, Dave you might have a slight issue, I was just reading the operating manual for the Cary and under the "Initial Setup" section, it states that a "spiked rack" is required for optimum fidelity.

    Might want to take care of that before doing any critical listening.

    Yesterday during my troubleshooting process, I swapped in the Rotel Pre, just to make sure everything else was working. Confirmed. Coming from the VTL, everything being equal, all I can say is OMG! The soundstage was smaller, sounded thinner, and the highs were veiled compared to the VTL.

    I'm guessing most of you toobies already knew that! :smile:

    Without ever having run a tube pre, always been a SS guy, I am a true believer in the tube pre/SS power amp setup. I'll never go back!

    The Rotel while no slouch in it's own right, was out of place, posing for the VTL!

    yes I believe it may of been the parts they used on the board itself not the color of the board per-say .

    Yesterday I was at our local electronics repair shop with my VTL, for a quick check, before I ventured into the relay switch replacement. Just wanted a second opinion before surgery, if you know what I mean.

    Well, he checked it out, and the diagnosis was a bad tube! The bias mismatch between the tubes was severe enough for the relays to act erratically. He popped in a set of shop tubes (12AU7's and 12AT7's), and the thing was operating normally!

    Everything was operating to specification, and received a compliment on how sweet this thing sounds!

    For me, some hints this newbie got, in retrospect.
    I noticed a slight hissing sound when the unit was powered on previously. Regardless of volume setting. I read a lot about it here on the forum, and attributed it to being normal. Probably a sign of a tube going bad?

    However today, when I put a full compliment of new tubes in (CBS 12AT7's from @heiney9 and the spare Mullards 12AU7's that came with it) it is now dead quiet.

    So far, so good. Happy camper now, albeit with a little anxiety while the unit is warmed up and playing.

    The learning continues! As always, thanks everyone for your advice and support!
