Farewell to OPPO Electronics

I still clearly remember my dad getting duped by the Circuit City salesperson into buying one, despite me talking in his other ear telling him no don't do it!Yeah, hated that idea, so I found one that was stand alone. It didn't last long, the transport gave up on it. The want/need for such a player lasted about the same, so I called it a wash. My PC took care of anything in that realm from then on.

I like my UDP-800, but I was considering getting an upgrade and Oppo was at the top of the list... Should I wait till the last minute and get one with the latest firmware update or forget the idea all together?

Streaming sucks. Physical media is always best, but too many want convenience because they are flat out lazy, not to mention stupid enough to be duped into dumping their physical media. No wonder this country has so many fat people.
However, to get high performance the audio and video world told us that the average transport sucked! Told us that MEGA buck transports are the only way to "true" sound and image quality. Record players, tape decks, car audio decks, CD players, DVD players, you name it. Several thousand for a transport, several thousand for a DAC, DSP, etc..etc, etc....
That's fine and all for enthusiast but its hard to make a profit off the rest of the world when the format keeps changing. The continued support and the need to R&D new products. In the last several weeks I think I've seen several 105, 103, 95, etc Oppo units for sale on craigslist. Either these guys have gone 4K or they are streaming by way of a different device. No way will the average A/V phile care or can afford to keep up with the pace. $650-$1350 for an Oppo that can't play the new format a couple of years later? Its not hard to see why so many have turned to streaming.
Also, while its great to have your favorite albums and movies on a hard format its a bit of clutter storing a lot of the different formats. Albums and VHS take up a lot of space that it was nice moving the CD's and DVD's. Those can add up and fill up a large piece of furniture over time.
Still, its always sad to see a specialty outfit like Oppo getting out of the game.

I worked the late shift yesterday and this is the news I wake up to.
I'm in shock. I have 3 Oppo players.
I agree that streaming sucks and it better get better and real quick. The Atmos/DTSX audio has to be available and in a quality way before I will switch to streaming.
I agree with F1nut that people are getting lazy and I also think that for the most part people are OK with just plain mediocre delivery of their content.
We all have had that neighbor or family member that has to be sat down and shown a quality presentation of content. It all comes back to our retail delivery of product. BB and Amazon aren't educating anyone. Also the good small shops are gone for the most part.
I got into this hobby through my grandfather and a little HiFi shop in SLC called Broadway Music. I learned a lot about this hobby through them. I also bought my first Polks from them. They have been gone about 15 years and I hate to see another great product like Oppo gone.
Hell I still have a laserdisc player and I remember people not getting why I would spend that kind of money on a Disc that has to be turned over halfway through the movie....That is until they watched a movie on Disc VS VHS.
I guess it just comes down to educating people about what is available and hoping what we love will stay around and get better.

This thread is about Oppo calling it done. Streaming is what is killing the standalone player market.
I told my bro who owns like 5 Oppo's. He was floored but understands that streaming is taking over. When I was a kid my parents told me to turn it down. Now I'm an adult and my kids tell me to turn it down.

That has been on my mind too.
I would like to see Sound United buy up this line from Oppo and rebrand it as a Marantz.
It would be sad to see us have to junk these players only to pick up a unit made from coke cans later.
Still not accepting this news.

Denial ain't just a river in Egypt

Marantz and Denon don't appear to have even a Blu Ray player on the market in the US anymore. Sony and Panasonic have 4K players that top out sort of at the Oppo 203 level. I can't imagine Oppo just shut down their production without the parent company looking for a buyer in the last few months. Just my opinion, but I thought the 105 and 205 were underpriced for what they are and the level of support they had.

Hey, maybe we are losing Oppo, but we still have Groucho, Chico, Harpo, Zeppo, and Gummo. -

Not out of the question. There was a Swedish company in my line of work in the 1980s (I won't mention the name) that was funded, it is said, by (no kidding) Swedish gamblers. The story has it that they pulled out their support of the company rather suddenly and it folded almost overnight.

Offered strictly as-is and FWIW, here's a thread from AK on the topic with some (perhaps?!) interesting perspectives. Again, no affiliation, no warranty express or implied, and no culpability for any of the content, whether profound or inane!

I agree that the physical media is better. I think that applies to music playback as well but the convenience of having an entire library at my fingertips ready to go instantly is just too tempting to pass up.
I have not compared physical media to streaming. I don't even know the various resolution options available from streaming services. I did find out that hi-rez digital video and digital audio files have better sound and picture quality compared to playback from a disc transport in my two channel and home theater systems.

Same observation here. A DVD ripped to an MKV file played back over Wifi through an Oppo 105 or 205 really impressed me.
Major new proposed tariffs on imported China-made electronics goods just announced today (straying into political, I know).

Sorry to hear. I would guess all of the costs involved to market standalone players in a crowded but very small market was not viable. 203 and 205 is a bit late and extreme markdowns on Sony and Samsung 4K players flooded them out except for higher end. SACD, dead and convoluted and interconnectivity is a mess.

I'm guessing he's asking if the better quality from a rip is due to the fact that your playing a uncompressed file compared to the original disc in which the player is uncompressing the file on the fly as it plays..
Or at least thats what I'm thinking before I've had my morning Diet Mountain Dews

Yes Dan that would be correct.
Somewhere something has made a difference. Ray I knew you ripped them one for one just didn't understand how one would be better than the other.
One would think they would be exact. -
Doubt it.
You don’t make a rash decision like that if there was not other, far larger concerns.
Plus they are shutting it down in Europe as well, not just the US market.
I think it’s just too large of a time and monetary investment to keep on the leading edge of players like this for the relatively small return.
If anything, I would blame all the fairly recent nonsense surrounding Dolby Vision, HDR and HDMI issues.
Why bother with the headache?
