Your Sony CDP has a DAC. By using the red and white "line outs" you are using the DAC built into the Sony. If you ran the digital optical out from the Sony to the "opt" connection in the digital inputs section of the Parasound you would be using the P5's DAC.

Hook up the EQ between the preamp and the amplifier.
    So:
    P5 preouts > EQ in
    EQ out > amplifier
    this will work

Try without for a while too.
    try this first - easiest!

The only other way to do it would be to EQ a single source, so between your TT and the P5.
NOOOOOO!!! Do not waste your time on this unless you have an outboard TT specific preamp that "outputs" line level signal to a standard LR in on any preamp.

That EQ is designed for line level signal levels* & impedences. Phono Cartridges (PC) be they high output "anything**" or low output MC*** don't have the drive* the EQ expects.

Further PC either rely upon very specific input capacitance** down to the picofared and a 47K ohm load or a much lower input impedence*** anywhere from 10 to maybe 200**** ohms. Ignore these parameters & you'll think your pre's phono section is garbage.
**** I'm guessing on this range, varies by manufacturer. Mine liked 100 +- 20. Usually a narrow range or sweet spot but hit it, and you'll rather listen to your vinyl than eat, sleep, or go to the potty!

Pirate walks into a bar with a steering wheel in his pants and says:

    Argh, it's drivin me nuts!
  • Ok I have another question, the brightness will this calm down? I disconnected the cable from the sda2s and it sounds much better as far as the brightness goes but I lose the sound coming out of the walls effect which I really like it wraps around your head. What happens to the speakers when I do this, what stops working to mellow them out? I would like this mellower sound but with the sda effect.
  • How did captain hook die? JOCK ITCH.... lol. Be honest some of you laughed.

Which tweeters do your SDA's have?

Brightness should calm down a bit with burn in.

Also which SDA 2's do you have? Side by side tweeters or single tweeter?

That's part of your problem. The SL2000's are on the bright side. I went from Peerless to SL2000's and it was a little disappointing. The soundstage of the SDA's "sound coming out of the walls" as you call it, made it worth it though.

We both need to upgrade to the RDO-194's, they can be bought from Polk for $48 a piece shipped if you mention you're a member of Club Polk.

Also, if your SDA's have the side by side tweeters, try disconnecting the SDA tweeter in each speaker, cover the loose fast on with electric tape or something, and put the tweeter back in.

  • Yes they are the side by side tweeters, I really love the sda sound. I cant replace the tweeters ant time soon I have a few other audio related items ahead of them. I will do what you suggested with the tweeters and keep you posted.

You only need to replace the two stereo tweeters with RDO's, so $100.

@westmassguy the SDA tweeters are the inside ones?

  • The place I got the 2s from had a pair if ones that look like the ones in your speaker thread would they be a better choice over the 2s that I have? They also had a cool looking pair of polks not really sure what they were, the single tweeter sat on top of the cabinet and had a cover over it, would these be better than what I have? Thanks for the info on the brightness calming down after burn in, I have around 17 hrs on her now.

The tweeter on top model you're talking about are RTA-12's. I like the SDA's better but the RTA-12's are awesome speakers too. You wouldn't get nearly as much "sound coming from the walls" with them though. To some people, though, that is distracting and they'd rather have non SDA's. You are not one of those people.

The single tweeter SDA 2's are better, yes. How much do they want for them? Would they take your current speakers in partial trade?

  • Nightfall the store that I got the sda 2s from had a pair of sda 1s would they be better than what I have? They will take the sda 2s in on trade.

Not familiar with the 1's, there are probably some comparisons if you search the forum though. Most would take a pair of 2B's and upgrade them to TL's over a pair of 1's though. Keep your eye out for SDA 2A or 2B's.

  • Ok 2b it is but these speakers are very hard to find around here, especially in driving distance and the shipping is way to high.
  • The new tweeters are the best bang for a $100 bucks you will ever spend on your system.
The best way to predict the future is to invent it.

It is imperative that we recognize that an opinion is not a fact.
  • OK I will get them as soon as I am caught up. From the sound of things I will notice a difference installing them. Thanks.
