Laserdisc-The godfather of ALL consumer optical disc media

^This is one of several titles which I happen to have in both Dolby Digital and DTS. Not once have I done a side by side-back to back comparison between ANY DD and DTS title and someone (even a non audiophile) didn’t hear the difference between the two.

Awesome, thanks for the heads up.

Additionally, to get it to play on a 16x9 screen, you would have to use the zoom feature on the display - especially with letterbox movies. There was no anamorphic laser discs to my knowledge so the bars at the top and bottom were baked into the image on the discs as they were made for the 4x3 TV displays of the time.
@GospelTruth These are just two of the many anamorphic titles available on Laserdisc. Most were Japan only like the T2 movie. The Fugitive is one of only four made for the American market for those Toshiba widescreen sets that I mentioned earlier.
These are currently the only two anamorphic titles that I own. However that may likely change if I can find any more at a decent price. -

A listing of all of the Anamorphic squeeze titles that came out on Laserdisc. There is a page and a third of titles.
The four released for the American market were:
The Fugitive
Unforgiven
Grumpy old men
Free Willy
No idea why they chose these particular movies.
Most of the other titles were either NTSC, PAL or PAL+ format for the Japanese or European markets. -
I still wish I had kept mine. It was a pioneer 3090. TOTL at the time. It had a digital frame buffer so you could do still frames on even CLV discs. S#it-Hot for the day. Best disc I had was Pink Floyd Delicate Sound of Thunder. It had Great Gig in the Sky shot at the Palace of Versailles. The girls belted it out like never before. It would give me chills. Don't think that has ever been on any other media that I know of. It's cut from the DVD version, sadly.

Thanks to my audio pimp @gmcman for feeding my addiction. It’s amazing how the Legato Link D/A converter in the Pioneer Elite DVL-91 Laserdisc Player-despite being built in the year 2000-comes PRETTY DARN CLOSE to the Oppo UDP-205!! The Oppo still wins, but the Pioneer is not embarrassed by it at all.
As I’m typing this out on my phone I’m hearing some SDA effects coming from above me and beside me
It literally sounds like they’re coming from one of my surround speakers. -

I have a Pioneer CD player with Legato Link conversion and it sounds fantastic to my ears. -

I like. I wonder how much the shipping would kill the deal... -

I think the biggest differences that I’m hearing between the Oppo and the Pioneer now that they’re both using the same cables is the Pioneer has more prominent upper midrange which is a bit more forward(some might call this “Digital Glare”?) The Oppo has deeper bass.

HUGE improvement right there. If you don't have the S1 Speaker cables yet, get some. Even better. Enjoy!

"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion."
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

@reverb I forgot to mention there are a LOT of titles and bits and pieces that were released on Laserdisc which have not been and will not be released on any other media. We're talking hundreds of titles here. -
Okay upon further review (and warming the units up for an hour or more) I realized the Pioneer isn’t brighter in the upper mids. It’s got less meat in the upper bass/lower midrange transition which can make it sound brighter. The Oppo has more meat there and more impact.
Again now that both units are warmed up the phase manipulated vocal effect at the beginning of this track does the same full circle ⭕️ around the room that the Oppo does. As well as going right through your head! -
If memory serves the Legato Link D/A converters that Pioneer made did something similar to what Wadia Digital did back in the day with their high oversampling (and extremely high cost) external component D/A converters.

I've never wanted a Laserdisc player until this moment: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Evangelion-Symphony-Music-Concert-LD-Laser-Disc-Japan-OBI-Anime-Manga-soundtrack/153366890213
Edit: And another! https://www.ebay.com/itm/japan-anime-laser-disc-evangelion-neo-genesis-25-air-1977-gainax-kila161/143118285701 -
@Clipdat what is that??
-
I'm not 100% sure but I believe it's a symphonic performance of music from the Evangelion anime.
-
@Clipdat No idea what that is. I’m assuming that is something you’ve been looking for/at?
-
I'm a collector of the music from that show. So those LDs are definitely something I would have in my collection, if I had a way to play them.
-
This is likely something that was exclusive to the Laserdisc medium and may not be found elsewhere in whatever form they made those discs.
@Clipdat if you WERE to decide to get those titles, just remember they’re in Japan. So with customs and all of that in both countries It would take a month to get to you. -
There are a lot of music titles only available on Laserdisc. That's why I keep my player.....

It’s interesting that when I changed the impedance switch on the MIT cables to the “high” setting, the gap between the sound of the Oppo and Pioneer players closed a bit. The Oppo still wins, but now it’s harder to hear the differences. Most of this is still centered in the lower midrange/upper bass transition area.
This is all very small differences that I am hearing here. I tried the switch in the “middle” and “low” positions due to my preamps input impedance listed in the owners manual and I couldn’t really hear any changes in the sound. So just for the halibut I tried the “high” setting even though it is well above what the input impedance is on my preamp and it made a difference for the better (?!?!?!????)
