Is there any speaker out there that can do what an SDA does???

Just pick up a pair of SDAs, nothing like it. Or, you can dump a ton of cash in a really good system and achieve equal (but different) results.Vinyl, the final frontier...
Avantgarde horns, 300b tubes, thats the kinda crap I want... -
Go for a vintage non-SDA series speaker if you want musicality and warmth without taking up too much real estate.____________________________________________________________

OK.. let me try and put this as simple as possible. I DON'T want to buy old speakers I have to rebuild. Used is fine if there like 5 years old or something. The speakers need to play loud and well in a 14X30 room and sit 15 feet back.
The RTI 12's fill the room, have the bass. There just not all that warm, but the high end can get over bright.. again I think do to the tweeter. These are played between 12-1 o'clock on the pre, maybe a tad over..this depends on the CD.
I want to keep the price at 3-4K, 3 would be better.
The DF BP8080ST seems to have really good reviews.. is it a somewhat warm speaker, don't know.. are the tweeters not giving you too bright info.. don't know.
There is also the Golden Ears stuff.. made buy the same guys from DT and 1 guy from Polk... But can they deal with the volume.. I don't know.
Maggies are great, but suck the life out of the amp, and need a big sub.. so your looking at well past 3K.
That's what i'm dealing with, so if you have any speaker recommendations. i'd love to hear them. -
Can't help you there. None of Polk's newer speakers have the warmth of their older speakers and the RT series are too bright IMO. You don't have to rebuild their older stuff; you just won't get the max level of performance out of them if you don't.____________________________________________________________

Sounds like I would start with a better amp.

No the amp is not a problem. Onkyo Integra M-5, adcom pre, jolidia tube CD.
The maggy 3's new are 6K, add a 1500 buck sub.. your far beyond what I want to spend, even if you drop down to the lower level Mags..with the sub... too much.
I like the martin Logan stuff too.. but again, with out the 1500 buck sub.. not happening.
Now the LSi M stuff from Polk...nobody even on this forum seems to say there the best thing since sliced bread. Not going to go there.
The other thing is i'm NOT looking for a speaker that needs subs... This is stereo only system.. nothing more. -
I'm stumped. You want a very specific set of requirements for your speakers, and you know what your options are, but those options are not good enough for you for a variety of reasons, so you are now seeking something else.

The 1.7 Maggies would be better given the size of the room.

OK... good lord. The Onkyo in the Integra M 504 165 watts per. Works fine never has a problem. The Adcom is the 400 model..not great but not trash. The Jolidia has EH tubes in it right now, but that's not the point, nore is the cables or anything else.

Toss in another grand for full upgrades and we have our problem solved. Accept no substitute. For the money you want to spend you will find nothing that will even remotely come close.
As an aside, I am detecting just a touch of attitude in some of your replies. Please understand, that all of us that have responded to your original query have been down your path more than once. I have gone from SDA-SRS 1.2TL's to Magnepan MMG's to MG-20's, only to find my way BACK to 1.2TL's.
No speaker, short of 15k can do what a set of properly modded 1.2TL's can do, ZERO, ZIP and NADA. For this reason, we have developed the most comprehensive set of mods, tweaks and upgrades that I have ever seen for a 30 year old speaker design. The performance these speakers are capable of is astounding, and why you see more than a few of us with gear that you would think far surpasses what these should be used with.
The mods make these speakers new in every respect, and as I said above, I have had exposure to many LEGENDARY speakers in the multiple tens of thousands of dollars. The Only speaker I would have back would be the Magnepan MG20's, but the 1.2TL's will not be leaving any time soon.
The M-504, while a good amp, was never a GREAT one imho, It too is considered vintage now and likely needs a recap or other maintenance to bring it back to full spec. I would also select a new preamp, as I suspect some of your issues have more to do with synergy than anything else.
Cables are the most overlooked, yet VITAL parts of a high performance audio system. Budget somewhere between 15 and 20 percent of overall budget to address how your components talk to one another, as every part of your audio system is responsible for the sound you hear. The Gear... Curious why you think you "need" to spend $1500 for a sub? This coming from a fan of big **** subs....

YES John.. I agree with you 100%....
I have a set of SDA 1C's small problem is 1 driver is shot. 3 years ago maybe longer I had Polk send me new drivers... they were in a word JUNK,,, made were ever I don't know. They would POP if pushed to hard, They sent me another driver.. did the same thing.. did not matter what speaker they were put in, did the same thing.
Now I have a call into polk to the only person that may have a clue about SDA stuff.
He may know if the drivers are either good or bad at this point.
If he tells me that these are now good drivers. I will spend the money....
IF the driver works.. then I will buy 5 of them for back ups..LOL These are the nasty MW6511 which you can NOT find online for the most part. This is not an easy fix.
I have tried to get the original driver fixed... LMAO... NOBODY will touch these speakers, I have tried all over the country... nobody will fix these drivers.
So your right, these are great speakers as long as you can get them fixed.... -
Your amp is part of the popping problem. You are pushing it to the point of clipping. I would suggest something on the order of 300 wpc plus, or going tubes. You also said that the Onk is a dual mono. Is it COMMON GROUND? That could also be the problem. The MW6511's come up on Ebay all the time.
I suggest working the problem rather than tossing solutions around that have no value at this point. Seems like you want SDA's, so let's go that route and help you get the very best out of them. The Gear... Attitude.. REALLY? Give me a break. I probably have had more Polk speakers then you since the 1980's... Basic problem is I can't repair them. So I asked a simple question of what might be close...

There are many here, myself included, that are willing to help solve the problems you might be having. Need a pair of updated crossovers? get me the parts and I will do them up for free plus shipping and a six pack of my favorite brew. Drivers??? yeah, we got that too. New drivers pop if you don't break them in before applying a lot of power (or high volume from a low power amp like the integra. They can also pop if wired in reverse of the rest of your drivers. 1.2s would go for at least 12K today, if sold new.Vinyl, the final frontier...
Avantgarde horns, 300b tubes, thats the kinda crap I want... -
OK.. Again.. there is nothing wrong with the amp. I have had these speakers since new in 1986 or 1987.. whatever don't remember. They play great. I have replaced MW 6511"s before..no problem from Polk, I even replaced the cross over in 1 speaker
from Polk...but now there is really no back up for these speakers.
I tried 3-4 years ago to replace an MW 6511.. it was junk. Now you can say what you want.. I did something wrong, but moved the diver from one speaker to the other, it would POP. What I got before.... was good.. now, I don't know where it's made.
I will try once again if the Polk guy tells me these drivers are good.
If they don't work... then I need another speaker set up.. that's what i'm talking about.
As far as putting in the drivers in speakers .. LOL I've done this a number of times and also a whole cross over.. so don't even bother to go there.
I've fixed computers for years.. really big crap from the 70's to boot.
Not like I can't replace a driver in a speaker.
-
OK mad max.. really.....your statement does not even may sense, and the Integra is NOT a low powered amp....
-
Your amp is fairly low powered as amps go. Deal with it. The EH tubes in your Jolida are horrible. Wonder why you've replaced so many drivers? At 12-1 o'clock on the volume that amp is in the clipping zone.Political Correctness'.........defined

bobt,
I had a long and successful career in HR, where I had to deal with all sorts of employee relations issues. One common one arose when an employee "didn't know what he didn't know." When a person is in this state, it is impossible for him to learn or be educated. Ideas that differ from what he "knows" are summarily dismissed.
It sounds to me like you are suffering from this condition with respect to the problem you articulated and for which some very wise and experienced folks on this Forum have generously offered their advice. In response, you ramp up the volume and truculence of your replies.
Do you already "know" the answer that you want? Have you already dismissed whatever they suggest? Or, perhaps, you don't really want help; you just want to complain about your plight.
I don't know, but that is my perception of the "attitude" others have noted.Family Room, Innuos Statement streamer (Roon Core) with Morrow Audio USB cable to McIntosh MC 2700 pre with DC2 Digital Audio Module; AQ Sky XLRs to CAT 600.2 dualmono amp, Morrow Elite Speaker Cables to NOLA Baby Grand Reference Gold 3 speakers. bobt,
I got it.
I also got a pair of 1Cs in 1989, that worked very well for over 20 years, driven by a Perreaux PMF2350 amp that I purchased at the same time I purchased the 1Cs. I never had a problem with the drivers -- or the tweeters or crossovers, for that matter.
A couple of years ago I jumped head first down the "rabbit hole" and upgraded the tweeters to RDO-194s and had Vr3 Mods upgrade the crossovers. I did all the other "standard" mods at the same time. The 1Cs are now driven by a vintage Perreaux PMF3150 (300W/channel RMS into 8 ohms).
These modernized 1Cs "sing," and they fill my basement with sound when I crank up the volume to about 50% of maximum. My basement is roughly 2,800 sq ft of area with lots of "stuff" but no interior walls. No problems with the drivers or tweeters. Great sound day after day.
"What is the point???" to borrow your question.
The point is that the problem is not likely with your drivers. If you open your mind to the advice you're getting from the "wise men" on this Forum, you might actually identify your problem and solve it. So long as you continue to point the finger at the MW 6511 drivers you have blown, you may never define your problem -- let alone solve it.Family Room, Innuos Statement streamer (Roon Core) with Morrow Audio USB cable to McIntosh MC 2700 pre with DC2 Digital Audio Module; AQ Sky XLRs to CAT 600.2 dualmono amp, Morrow Elite Speaker Cables to NOLA Baby Grand Reference Gold 3 speakers.
