Don't matter....there's a lot of white people here too yet the race card is played every day.

Lets not turn this into a race thing because it has zero to do with it anyway. I'm still baffled that this virus can be in you for 3 weeks before you even show symptoms. That's a huge window to spread it. Still can't find an answer to if this virus is in you, does it ever leave even after you get treatment and survive. Can some other trauma later on set this virus off and running again in supposedly cured patients ?

Not sure if you guys saw because it was the last post on the 2nd page but there is already a possible case outside the two doctors that came here, in a hospital in Manhattan. If it ends up being true, I wonder how it got here being we quarantined those two doctors...

I have to re-read everything I type as my brain and my hands are not on the same page anymore, like a very bad spell checker in my head,, its weird..

but back to the 3 week window on Ebola ,that is flat scary...another problem is the bleeding and leaking of blood from everything that make it easy for a infected person to leave a lot of contaminated substance behind for someone to contact it. I read about a few really great doctors that past away after jumping in to help out! a lot of lives have already be effected by this :(

The bleeding and leaking from every **** in your body doesn't happen from the git-go....takes time after the virus has taken hold then it starts liquefying your insides. A horrible way to die no doubt. That 3 week window though before signs can show up but the virus can be spread is the scary part to me.

Then again, the flu kills millions a year still, Malaria about 900,000. Ebola hasn't been the big bad killer in comparison but mainly because it's contained to the areas of the outbreak. Nobody knows what triggers these outbreaks, it comes and goes for no apparent reasons. Dead animals and fruit Bats they say are carriers....along with dead bodies which even after death the virus can still stay active in the host.

They do have some fairly large cities in Africa in the countries this virus is active in. A city of say 3 million, it could spread quickly and that's the concern. Screening international travelers from the areas of the outbreaks to me should be a no brainer. Unfortunately the Harvard educated people in charge think otherwise. Dropping unknowns with unknown diseases at different cities across the country seems to me at best....the thoughts of an idiot, especially since we have an outbreak of an incurable virus going on. There's simply no rationale other than politics...or stupidity...or both in my view. Call me crazy, but I always thought the #1 job of those in charge was to protect the country and it's citizens. Silly me with such silly notions.

I've read that good old soap can kill this virus before it enters the body. Now we are back to sanitary conditions we mentioned before. Lucky for us, the powers at be announced a 14 billion buck investment into Africa by some corporations. What for exactly you may ask ?

Construction- for exactly what, we don't know...secret squirrel stuff.
Banks- can't forget those....who would have thought.
Information technology- whatever that means....cable tv ? Spy centers ? Again...secret squirrel.

What I didn't hear was, who's going to invest in infrastructure....you know, clean running water with indoor plumbing. Sewer systems and toilets. Who was going to invest in teaching the masses sanitary procedures, handling of food, personal hygiene. Who was going to teach them farming techniques, how to support themselves, how to create an economy using some natural resources. How to attract business investments, jobs, and create a monetary system. How to be self sustaining and bring them into the 21st century.

You can't, because the corruption from the little dictators of these African nations will overpower any efforts. Thus nothing will change unless the governments change, either willingly or by force. The governments will swoop down and simply take what they want when they deem their people have too much, keep them in that box. Hmmm....sounds similar to another place I know.

Too early to tell yet, but it looks promising anyway. Still, can you imagine the costs ? If we have a supposedly cure, or something to knock it back long enough for the body to recover, wouldn't it make sense to try it in the field where you have numerous test subjects rather than bring 2 here and incite fear ?

There are some more deaths in other countries from people who have recently visited the affected African countries. It is hard to imagine all these people are coming into contact with bodily fluids from affected people. Or, it is now so contagious that even a droplet from a sneeze can infect others. With all the effort over the last few months in trying to contain this, it only seems to be getting worse.

The structure and rate change of the common cold virus is a different animal. There are too many strains around and all can mutate quickly. However, some viruses can be contained and controlled more easily. We do have some vaccines for certain diseases that are viral in nature that work quite well.

True pal, but the whole point of containment is to keep a virus from spreading and mutating into more strains. Can you imagine Ebola in as many strains as the flu ? Up to this point, containing Ebola to certain parts of Africa have been successful, but that success in part comes from NOT flying these people around the world for treatment. Bring the treatment to them, not them to the treatment.

Hate to keep harping on it, but until we get it threw our thick skulls that a strong immune system and sanitary living conditions are the 2 most important things that can happen in avoiding diseases/viruses, they will continue to take a foot hold around the globe.

By itself, a strong immune system is NOT always a good thing. If I remember correctly, many with the best immune systems were among the first to die in the 1918 Flu. The reason, their bodies threw everything at the virus and ended up decimating their bodies in the process.

Sanitation is important. But what causes sanitary problems? Economic, political and historical factors. Hmmmmmm! Now with those variables in mind, rethink Africa and is it "really" a surprise that it suffers so much? Not really. But no one wants to talk about those issues. Everyone seems to think that Africa's political instability and economic problems are fairly recent or, in the British Imperial parlance: the legacy of tribalism (most anthropologists/historians "laugh" at the hypocrisy of that statement since the British went around asking, what they thought were "coherent" groups--which often were not) groups who was their Chief, and if they DID NOT HAVE A CHIEF, the British made sure they had one before they left. Ethnic groups which had no real history or tradition were born and they began to identify with the made up identities the British fabricated (among other powers, the British were not the only colonial masters). After the Civilized White man left his "burden" (Africa), it was a mess--they had also extracted a lot of its valuable product and used the African as a cheap source of, not slave, but subjugated labor, and favored ONE group over OTHERS, creating a lasting resentment and enmity while promulgating a continuing economic dependence and underdevelopment in the process. A power grab by a succession of elites who now had a fully Western notion of greed, profit and politics to emulate ensued in the post-colonial period. Africa is NOT us is an absurd idea. We helped create that mess! Now we blame them for their problems. Typical of us, isn't it? This is our constant refrain. It's not "me" its "you"! lol

You can take most any continent and dig up history that's tainted, thing is, what is anyone prepared to do about the problems today that exist there....today ? Is anyone there concerned about their future ?

Africa has always been a place where others take but leave nothing in return. If you don't change that process, nothing there will ever change. When you raise out of poverty one person, one country, the whole rest of the world benefits. Unfortunately too much politics is involved, too many elites with their brains set on taking what benefits only them.

I'm not trying to take away either the good work many charitable organizations have provided the people of Africa with over the years. When you look at it though threw unfiltered lenses, way more needs to be done on all fronts....by everyone, not just us and a few other countries. Otherwise Africa's problems will become ours....or must we wait until that happens before we get serious about fixing problems.

It may be hard to do, but I'd like to see Africa united into one country, maybe 2. Just like the United States where we have many states united under one governing body of laws. Without any stable political system, investment there will never reach the heights needed to raise people up.

Not going to happen. Most of the countries in Africa have little in common with each other.
So it's a free for all. And the biggest predators eat first.
"The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." --Thomas Jefferson
