I'm not a full-time "football" fan, but I do like to watch the World Cup. (I just said it without "FIFA" in front of it. I'm sure someone will be knocking on my door to show me a red card for that). Really impressive play at this highest level.

I've missed only 2 matches as of yesterday. I am recording them though...

About calling it just "World Cup"... Is there another one? :-)

I normally do not watch much soccer but I spent the weekend watching almost every World Cup game shown on ESPN or Univision. It is a great event. I find it much more exciting watching the games on Univision as the commentators are much more lively and informative. Unfortunately I have to work tonight and will miss the USA-Ghana game. I am rooting for both the USA and Mexico.

Watched the US vs Gana game with my brother-in-law last night. Don't normally follow soccer. Being from Costa Rica, he really gets excited every four years, so I allow him to watch the games on my Home Theater. Was a great game. Have to say, the color commentary on the Spanish channel is more "colorful", pun intended. No clue what they're saying, but they sure get into it.

USA got away with one yesterday. They better show better ball control if they expect to go far. Defense won yesterday's game for us and perhaps a few lucky misses.

Good victory for the USA. Enjoyed every moment of the game.
Hoping they can get out of the Group of Death!

I have watched virtually every game.

Love when an underdog wins. How about them Costa Ricans over the favored Uruguay!

Once again the Dutch, Italians and Germans show their class!

I was really impressed with the Croats against Brazil. They do not fool around.

    This x 1 million.

I haven't seen a game that sloppy since high school. Seriously. Sloppy passing, too much "boom ball", and too much left on Howard's shoulders. We'll get destroyed by Germany or Portugal if we pull that mess again.

And with Altidore down, I'd love to hear what Klinsmann has to say about leaving Donovan off the roster now (huge mistake in my mind, even if we are building for the future.)

Very entertaining World Cup so far. I am glad I am not in any pools, as I would never predict 1:5 trashing of Spain by Netherlands, or even Germany-Portugal 4:0 score. Very high scoring WC too! Watching Russia-S.Korea tonight.

    And btw, it's football.

One thing about the coverage that is bothering me for some reason... This image is one of the most ICONIC scenes in Brazil, and it has been wiped from the face of the earth. I have watched pans of this area and they stop short of showing it. In the cartoon animation, it appears for about a second before the little boy's head obscures it. On the broadcast desk, it is shown, but blurred out by something, so as to not actually make it visible.

This has to be by design. Can you imagine the World Cup in Saudi Arabia NOT showing Mecca or in Egypt not showing the Pyramids? My frustration with this is NOT that they are not showing it for whatever reason, rather that they are going to extremes to remove it from any shot in which it appears, and given the prominence of the statue in the locale they are in, it would take considerable planning and a decision from the networks to remove it. The question is why?

Funny that nobody minds offending them... I am not even a religious guy by any means, but I would expect that something so iconic could not be simply brushed aside. I could not imagine getting a postcard from Brazil without it, in much the same way a postcard from South Dakota must have Mt. Rushmore or one from Paris has the Eiffel Tower.

Just more than a bit shocked I guess by how far we go to remove historic icons for the sake of pleasing a few.

In the rest of the world, yes. Here in the US it's called Soccer.

It's called football as it's a game involving the foot and a ball ( a ball is usually spherical). American football involves the hands and a "ball" shaped like an egg, so maybe should be called Handeggball. Rugby uses a ball shaped like an egg, but is exempt from all this as the name of the game makes no mention of a ball. Just kidding, I'm English. Of course it's soccer in this country.

Actually, I'm very excited that soccer is gradually becoming a game that is not something that just kids play, and more kids want to carry on playing it as they get to college age. It would be great to see this country compete on the world stage at the level it ought to be capable of. Looking at the recent performance, England can't !

Welcome to the new world. One small minority is offended and everyone else has to suffer to make them happy.

I was just busting chops. I find it interesting that Canada has the CFL, which is American Style Grid-Iron Football, and they call it Football, and they also have Football teams that play soccer.

Nah, they call it soccer here too. You'd think we'd know better being multicultural and all that stuff. The only two countries in the world that don't understand the meaning of foot+ball. Actually looking at Canada being #110 in the world, stuck between Bahrain and Niger, behind such football giants as Quatar and Aruba, I understand why people don't care, but USA, being #13...

Looks like the rest of the world finally figured out how to break up the usual Spain and Barcelona passing game by applying a lot of pressure to get the ball back quickly and get it upfield. Bayern Munich figured out how to destroy Barcelona's tactics last year. They still have great players, but they need a more adaptable system against the best teams now. Fascinating to watch it happen over the last couple of years. They had a good long run at their game though.

Yes, they have the best goalkeeper around, great passing, excellent discipline and organization, fast, big and powerful players. Italy is always tough at these tournaments though. They make scoring goals look easy and always seem to go far even when their team isn't expected to. Not really impressed with Brazil so far.

I think Father Time is also on the other side of Spain this year. And agreed on Germany, they are incredibly technical and disciplined. I hate to say it, but I can't imagine them not running through us when the time comes. We're just too loose with the ball to mount any kind of sustained/meaningful attack, especially on a team like Germany. Italy looked spot on against England. I'd be wary of them as well.

I can't say I expected this, but after their performance in the first game... Well you could see trouble ahead.
