If you care to read the rules, you'd understand how extra time is calculated based on number of injuries, number of subs, etc. Basic rule of football is that the attack does not stop when the clock stops ticking - ref lets the attack finish before blowing the whistle.
Just because something is 'in the rules' doesn't make it right either. I can add a new rule where the team losing at the end of the match get a free shot on goal for every point that they're down, doesn't make any sense though.
Maybe I'm in the minority, but you take the flop out and have a set clock and I'll watch a lot more soccer. -
Hyped for Mexico v Croatia!
I am expecting fireworks!
Not easy picking between the two in an evenly matched context.
Cant wait.
Love the Beautiful Game!

So what exactly are you complaining about? You don't like some game rules, so you don't watch the game? I don't know half the rules in American football and baseball, so I don't watch those either.Panasonic PT-AE4000U projector for movies

What a disappointing ending to an otherwise great game played by the US against Portugal last night. The US completely dominated play and should have won that game. How the heck do they allow Portugal to score with 15 seconds left in extra time? Just unbelievable. I know there are a lot of players to blame on that play but, imho, Bradley takes most of the blame for losing the ball at midfield. All he had to do was kick the ball forward or to the sidelines and the US wins that game. Prior to the World Cup, he was touted as the best player on the team. But he has had a horrible 2 games so far.
-
Bottom line on time, the referee is the only person with the exact game time. Everything is decided by his clock/whistle. He stops and restarts the clock to best reflect the time spent not playing due to an injury, idiot running on the field, etc. So while the guy on the sideline might hold up a board showing 5 minutes of extra time, the ref may have 4:52 of extra time, or 5:27 or whatever.
And BRADLEY. Shame, shame, shame on you. Agreed 100% pgl, the game was in the bag at that point. So much for that whole "we don't need Donovan" theory....2007 Club Polk Football Pool Champ

Ditto on Bradley.
I am yet to be impressed by him. Who anointed him the "best" player on the US team?
He really has to up his game in the crucial match against Germany.
In any case, the game is not over until the fat lady sings. Edge of seat stuff!
The US has been very impressive thus far in one if the most difficult groups in the tournament.
Waiting to see how the game against Germany, a game in which both teams advance with a draw, pans out.
Hey Klinsmann, how about calling your former assistant ( current German coach) and tell him to tell his troupes to pull their punches!!
Nah. The US can handle itself.

It's not that hard to figure out guys, I thought I was pretty clear about what I didn't like - flops and clock management. It's really simple I had an opinion and stated it, don't act all shocked and confused. Don't tell me you've been soccer fans your whole lives and have never heard people **** about those two things...because nobody will believe you.
Another thing I don't particularly care for with soccer are the soccer snobs. I've got a few of them I work with and if I hear "Dude don't even talk soccer to us you're not even a real fan if you only watch during the world cup" one more time...
I don't take that attitude with the millions of people who ONLY watch the Super Bowl each year, why should soccer be any different? -

I would like to weigh in a couple of things that have been said... just to continue the friendly discussion
- I do not like players that fake injuries, faults, etc.
- I do not like players/teams that waste time to take advantage (or try to take advantage by any means. That includes goals scred illegally on purpose)
- The extra time to play lies with the ref, in fact if he "forgets" to look at his watch and you play even beyond the announced extra minutes, then a goal in those extra ones stand!
- Everybody knows how much extra will be played (I remember when time extra lied with the ref who did not inform how much that was and there was no sign for all the world to see!), they are all in equal position, and not only it can go both ways, every team will find itself either winning or losing at different occasions, so it averages out. Had it been the other way around, Americans would be happy and Portuguese would be .. well let's just say "not happy"
- I don't know if 5 was too much or too little, however, sometimes I feel that it is always too little when I see stats of how much actual playing time there was.
To the second US goal, I don't think it was off like mentioned above, the TV showed the frozen image of the pass beign made and the US player on side.
I am really suprised with the performance of several "underdog" teams and some not so "underdog" anymore! This may be the year somebody new goes all the way, although I expect "traditional" canditates to the trophy to become stronger in the next phase. Little dissapointed by with these "traditional" teams have shown so far.
Just my 2c -
bernardo, it's the 4th ref (on the sidelines) who keeps track of the clock, so it should be fairly precise, as it's one of his main things to do. Obviously, when he tells the head ref that players wasted 5:32 on the pitch, head ref will add 6 minutes plus whatever extra time they wasted in the injury time.
And for players who fake injuries to get penalty or waste time, and then jump up two minutes later like nothing happened - those should be suspended post-game. Such players are ruining this beautiful game.Panasonic PT-AE4000U projector for movies

I believe they get a yellow in the EPL.
I saw the Chileans in their game against Holland yesterday do more than their fair share of falling in the penalty box trying draw a penalty. Fortunately the ref did not fall for it.

Yes, in any league player that got caught simulating in the box gets a yellow. But IMHO, these players should be punished (red/suspsension) after the game following the episode review. Episodes like this make or break games in most cases, so it would only be fair to punish fakers accordingly.Panasonic PT-AE4000U projector for movies

The fourth ref might be telling the main ref how much more to play, but it is up to the main ref to indicate the end of the game. I've seen refs ending it sooner and also later, due to time wasted during the extra or for no apparent reason at all

I personally felt the 2010 U.S. team was superior to this years. If U.S. gets into round of 16, it is all circumstantial, as Germany is simply leagues beyond. Defense, Offense, Passing, name it.

Maybe so, but tactically this year's team has been way better.
The Germans are no slouch, but their defense is suspicious. They let Sweden, their top opponent during the World Cup's European qualification round, score 7 goals in 2 games. And they allowed Ghana to score 2 on them in a game they almost lost. They have been enduring too many injuries this year.Gears shared to both living room & bedroom:

The Germans have always been and will always be a tough nut to crack.
The world is full of talented players that can breach any defense including the Germans'.
The Ghana game was a good example. The team is full of world class marksmen. They took the game to the Germans.
The Germans did not allow Ghana to score 2 on them. The Ghanians scored 2 goals on them and were good value for those goals.
It could very well have been 3 -1 in favor of the Ghanians at one point had it not been for a moment of selfish play by Ayew electing to score from an impossible angle instead of passing the ball to the waiting and salivating Gyan!
They paid the price a few minutes later when the ultimate goal poacher, Klose was sent in to rescue the Germans and he did so in style!AMP/Pre Pro: Outlaw 7000x, Marantz AV7703

In a tournament full of surprises so far, can the US spring a surprise against the favored Germans?
Will Michael Bradley be in the starting line up and if he is will he SHOW UP?
Thomas Muller , Mesut Ozil please DO NOT show up
Will Rolando finally show up and do a number on the Ghanians (apparently having some internal issues prior to the game), thus helping the cause of the Americans?
I guess all i want to know is will the US make it out of the GROUP OF DEATH!!!!

This game really highlighted how important altidore is to this team - dempsey looked lost, couldn't hold possession and playing with one striker is leaving the US midfield exposed. Hopefully he can rest up and play next game or Klinsmann can pull out some magic to help dempsey up top.Shawn

My two teams - USA and Mexico - are still in it.
Can you imagine the craziness if USA and Mexico meet in this World Cup? El Tri vs the Yanks!
I think it would happen if (a big"if") each team wins its next 2 games. Then they'd meet in the quarter-finals.
I know it sounds crazy but not nearly as crazy as it would have sounded prior to the start of the World Cup.
Both Mexico and the USA are playing very well.
This has been one heck of a World Cup.
And US soccer and FIFA are already big winners no matter what happens the rest of the way. -

You just hit the nail on the head with all your points.
Mexico has just been OUTSTANDING!
They not only beat the Croats, a team that gave Brazil fits, they beat them up like they stole something.
Had it been a boxing match , the ref would have stopped the contest to save the Croats from further punishment!
I just cannot imagine the craziness and tension if the USA and Mexico were to meet. That would really be special.
