 sorry, now I see it (I think)... He did not have a very good tournament in 82. Things changed very much in 86, and then it went downhill from there! Excellent player... Not a very good coach though IMO of course

You are talking about THE #10, right? hope I got it right this time around

Yep, #10 definitely! He actually did an admirable job in 1990 when he carried the no-talent team to the Final, even beating the host Italy in the semifinal. Klinsmann, the current US coach, actually flopped big time to get an Argentine thrown out with a red card during the Final.

I remember 1990 very well, in fact it still "hurts" when talking about it. I wouldn't say it was a no-talent team though, we had some very good players...

They are an awesome team, they don't need help from the ref... I am beyond words right now, it doesn't feel right. Congrats to them they scored and we did not

Hey man, I was rooting for Argentina all the way to the end. Great defensive game and they kept Germany out of the box most the game. Kinda disappointed in Messi though, thought he'd be more of a factor in this. Can't say you didn't have your chances either on at least 3 occasions.

Well, congrats to the Germans anyway. They played a great game too. The ref was letting them play without blowing the whistle every 10 seconds, I liked that.

You think Germany will now ease up on "austerity" measures that make FORTUNES for ITS banks at the expense of their fellow Euro Members? Probably not!

A well deserved victory by the Germans.
In the end the best team won the tournament. Anything less would have been borderline cruel.

The Argentinians put up a good fight. In the end they were taken into deep waters and drowned.
Im thankful it was not decided by penalties.

    Angel Di Maria was missed.
Aguerro was a non factor. To me he was just taking up space.
Messi did not have his usual cutting edge.

Once again any comparison to the great Maradona is pure blasphemy!!

That one blew by me, your gonna have to explain how budget cuts makes more money for their banks. I think Merkel has injected some common sense budgeting into a system that relies heavily on spending today what you don't have tomorrow. Kinda like us, no ? Germany already eats up over 80% of it's GDP from spending and servicing it's debts....AND that's a far cry better than a lot of their European counterparts.

We are around 40%....BUT that doesn't include military spending. Throw that in and we are in the same boat. In my eyes, and a lot of others too, deficit spending is usually reserved for emergency purposes. Such as you do in your own life, not a year over year requirement.

Check to see who is getting "repaid" on loans to those countries who are seen as the heinous southern Europeans, those good for nothing lazies. Does Germany EVER take a "hit", or does it not actually make money, the money that IT, in many, many, many cases loaned to those freeloaders even though IT should have known better. Well that does not matter because austerity pumps up the repayment back to, you guessed it, Germany. And Germany not only gets its payment, but it receives an outrageous PROFIT because of the lending rates--a profit which really cannot be justified considering the dire condition its debtor nations are in. I have this first hand from relatives that work in said good for nothing countries. You think they're pissed at Germany for no good reason?

Now I am NOT saying that they are also not responsible. But the Germans have to stop playing the innocent, frugal, practical big brother, and admit that they are also a little parasitic! It's a complex situation over there. And one shouldn't look at Merkel and think she and her boys are mirror images of us, or maybe they should if they think of us as the boys and girls who CRASHED the market with derivative loans. The Germans were doing something very very similar to their poor southern neighbors, and those poor neighbors were STUPID to take those loans! When it comes to this kind of thing and also to American economic problems. One must think deeply and think historically. And NEVER think as ECONOMISTS think, because those guys know about as much history as the average American: none, that is! If you only read conservative economists you'll ALWAYS think "austerity" makes perfect sense. If you read a little more WIDELY you'll soon see that "austerity" almost never works! It never solves the problems of the debtor countries but its a BOON for those who lent the money in the first place.

Now I am not simply blaming the Germans or their creditors. But I would highly advise that people follow the aphorism: neither a lender nor a borrower be! That said, I am absolutely sure that those whose politics differ from mine will completely disagree with everything above, because they have to in order to keep the myths that our system is rooted in alive. And thus shall it ever be. Who ever said that playing with global markets and developing or poorer countries was EVER FAIR!

Because soccer...the one truly international sport out there should become a big debate on who owes who what.

    Mea culpa!

You're right. I shouldn't have hijacked this thread. And it is the one international sport that most all countries in the world revel in.

The only reason in some cases austerity doesn't work, is God forbid the people that lent you money to begin with want it back with interest. That, and countries who practice austerity measures cut budgets and services to the masses but never touch the other big coin that rests inside government itself. Perfect example is when we had our own austerity measures and forced some budget cuts. The first thing they do is to "make it hurt" the people to get this silly notion out of their heads. Meanwhile, back at the ranch on Capitol hill, we have the IRS hiring like crazy and wasting money even faster. Over blown salaries at the V.A., buying guns and ammo for agencies that should not need them. Starting crap all over the globe and committing resources...and putting into place new spending on programs here such as HC. So when the debt still goes up, they can say " See, austerity doesn't work".

Is it unreasonable to ask the borrower to tell the lender how they will pay it back ? What measures are they taking to assure their own budgets can afford the payments ?

Here's a clue....don't borrow money from them if you don't like the terms. Whats that ? You have no choice because you spent more than you take in ? What ?? You have no plan to curtail your spending but want to borrow more ? That's called "high risk" in financial circles and demands even higher interest rates be paid......in any circle.

These smaller countries are at a disadvantage because they can't print their own money like us. They have to live within their means. That's why their is such a disparity between those who can print their own money, and those who can't. Has nothing to do with agenda's....well the little ones that become talking points anyway.

When has it become a negative to ask people to live within a budget ? You do...I do, government is supposed to but doesn't, companies do. Yet when a lender of money asks the borrower of their money to put forth a plan of repayment it's now somehow biased and hurtful ?

Though it is a very interesting topic, let's keep the thread open, shall we? Personally, I have lots of things to say on the topic, but I am not going to

So next year in Chile we get to play the Copa Am
