I have been looking for this since I heard it reviewed on The Record Shelf w/ Jim Svade (on NPR.) Amazon finally had it available from Rhinebeck Records.
Gareth Farr--Symphonic Works
Not the greatest recording technically. On tracks 1 & 2 (From the Depths Sound the Great Sea Gongs) the bulk of the orchestra sounds distant(?) while the precussion is really enjoyable. (And percussion is what Farr seems to do best.)
I think 'Queen of Demons' is my favorite track.

Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes - Live at the Greek
A blistering live 2 cd set of mostly Zep tunes with a few blues standards thrown in. No Crowes songs because of contractual issues. This one of my favorite live rock cd's the sound is amazing and full.
This is superb SDA recording. This show used 3 guitarists and in the past it was always difficult to discern each guitar and who was playing what because the guitars seems to come from the same location.
The way the recording was made has Audley Freed in the left channel; Rich Robinson in the right channel; and Jimmy Page in the center (actually slightly off center to the right). On the SDA's both the L and R are way out off the sides and Jimmy is just right of Chris Robinson's vocals which are dead center.
This sounds so full on the SDA's, my buddy even mentioned that it sounded like I had a surround system on while we were listening. All the instruments are so fleshed out and you can hear every little nuance of the recording. The organ, toms, cymbals were all in the mix in different spots R/L and F/B. It really sounded like I was right in the middle of the concert.
If you like Zep get this cd. If you have SDA's and like Zep this is a must have. While this band could never replace Zep they do a damn fine job and Jimmy for the most part is on fire. I have a bootleg video of a show from this mini-tour and they take a no nonsense approach. It was easy to visualize the whole show while listening to this fantastic recording.

Thanks for the info. I wonder if this offering has been put to vinyl. How old is this one? -

This was released in '00 and don't hold me to it but I believe you should be able to find this on LP with some searching. If not get the cd you won't be disappointed. Chris Robinson does the best job to date on the Zep vocals. I think he is even better than David Coverdale (I have a few boots of the Coverdale/Page tour in Japan way back when). Throughly enjoyable!!"Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. Measurements can provide a measure of insight, but are no substitute for human judgment. Nancy Wilson - Just For Now
1967, Capitol ST2712, LP
Amazing arrangements and sound quality from this 40 year old disc. -
Switching medium and spinning Mayall's "Back to the Roots" double album @ 7 1/2 IPS with the new (to me) Akai 280D-SS R2R deck. Sound quality, dynamics, bass extension, and depth/width of the soundstage simply get no better than this. Larry Taylor does a bass run in the intro to "Home Again" that could never be reproduced as faithfully on LP or CD. Mayall's honky tonk blues piano style rolls of the manual and into time and space with an intimacy and urgency of its own. As close to first generation "being there" as I've heard.

Grand Funk Railroad - Born to Die
1976, Capitol ST-11482, LP
Originally intended as their last album, they reunited shortly after its release to record with Frank Zappa on "Good Singin' Good Playin'". Side B is some of my favorite work by Farner with Craig Frost on keyboards and vocals a big plus. -
Robin Trower - Bridge of Sighs
1974, Chrysalis CHR 1057, LP
James Dewar was, IMHO, the best rock vocalist of the era and a bassist with few equals. This album is a showcase for his talents, Trower's guitar work is just extra icing. Sadly, he passed away in 2002 at the age of 60.

Two fer....Roy Buchanan- "American Axe-Live in 1974" and Luther Allison-"Bad News Is Coming". The Luther Allison cd is a huge winner an excellent Blues album.

Joni Mitchell - Miles of Aisles (w/the L.A. Express)1974
I'm not a huge Joni Mitchell fan but no one can doubt her influence on folk style music and mmany of the female artists that I like site her as an influence. One of the reasons I like this disc is because of the recording. Very open and intimate for a live recording. Another outstanding SDA disc. She does a few of her major hits and I especially like the live Big Yellow Taxi, Circle Game and Blue.
Bottome line even if you aren't a big Joni Mitchell fan the recording is very much worth it. Simply outstanding because it draws you right in. Also, FYI 70% of the disc is Joni with her guitar and the other 30% includes the L.A. Express who sound fantastic.

Front 242 - ReBoot Live
The experimental nature and live performance skills of Front 242 are captured in this release of a concert given in Belgium. The band, which emerged at the forefront of Chicago's dance scene in the late 1980s, has always made a point of delivering a dynamic show utilizing only live sequencing, eschewing the use of playback tapes. The set list includes such favorites as "Body to Body," "Im Rhythmus Bleiben," "First in First Out," Moldavia," and "HeadHunter," played to an appreciative audience.
Reliving some of my younger days. This is really where "techo" music has it's roots. Some good stuff, if not a bit repetative. I remember going to Wax Trax records on Lincoln in Chicago about twice a month to get the latest new underground releases.

Art of Noise- Who's Afraid.....
I continue to regress. Which is fun to finally pull out stuf I haven't listened to in years. Met a female recently and it seems our common interest (among others) is "new wave" underground music from the 80's. Hence the romp thru my past.
Art Of Noise: Trevor Horn, Anne Dudley, J.J. Jeczalik, Gary Langan. The Art of Noise's first full-length release, from 1984, is also their best and most intriguing. Containing the dance club smash "Beat Box (Diversion One)," the MTV favorite "Close (To the Edit)" and the influential, near-ambient "Moments In Love," WHO'S AFRAID is a revolutionary album that changed the course of modern electronic music. Its effects were felt equally in postmodern avant-garde circles and the hippest of dance clubs. Trevor Horn, Anne Dudley, J.J. Jeczalik and Gary Langan's work has both melodic and rhythmic sophistication and, perhaps more importantly, a playful sense of humor. "Snapshot" cheekily quotes The Who's "Baba O'Riley," and the key rhythmic element of "Close (To The Edit)" is the sound of a car ignition. WHO'S AFRAID also has darker moments, like "A Time For Fear," which prominently features tapes of the 1983 US invasion of Grenada, and the foreboding, ambient pieces that end the second side.

No sadly I never bought the original, but my brother who is way more into the "new wave" movement of the 80's on a regualr basis does have it and I made a copy. Listened to a lot of Ministry and Cabaret Voltaire, Nitzer Ebb etc......the list goes on and I seriously haven't listened to this stuff in 8-10 years.
Always from day 1 have been a Trent Reznor fan and I think he was influenced heavily by many of the "harder" sythesized industrial music of that era (80's) Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, Revolting ****, and on on and on......:)

I just bought Black Sabbath WSOSFRR.
I was worried that the CD would suck, but it has pretty good dynamics for that type of music.Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know.
