This one from my brother-in-law is and he was always and audiophile of sorts but has changed; "How can all that old technology, turntable, R2R, CDP, tubes, sound anywhere near as good as my iPod? It is pure music without any medium to cloud the sound!" Then he says, "you're going backwards!"

    ARRRRGHHHHHHHGGGG!!!

He thinks the iPod he now has sounds better than my rig and won't even sit and listen with me when he visits from time to time. The funny thing is for the past four years I couldn't get him out of my 2ch room when he visited he was so taken by the sound of the rig!!! That is until he got the iPod!:confused::confused::confused:

When he first posed this question to me, I asked him if he had taken up drinking.

All good comments as I'm sure most of us have heard the majority of these questions. I always try and work in "it's about the quality of the sound ". Of coarse they say that Ipod is soo easy and convenient. Well, if you can't take a few hours,in your own home to sit down and just listen to the music, then you need to change around some priorities in your life. Personally,I can't see why the two technologies can't co-exist. One is very portable, easy to use, and stores a gazillion songs. While the older technologies offer better sound qualities, cover art, gear you can touch and feel and has some worth, and a more taylored experience. I think today, this co-existing idea is taking shape as digital becomes better and products become more geared towards quality of sound. Will it ever reach the bar set by tubes and vinyl ? I doubt it, which is why they are still in demand. Demand drives the market, as long as we keep demanding sound quality, products will appear to hopefully meet those demands.

I just had a party last night. My neighbor, a huge Bose fan who has Bose all over his house, asked me why I have such monster speakers. They take up too much room, cost way more than his Bose...blah,blah. I turned them on and threw in some Dire Straights, and said, " Does your Bose sound like this?" He smiles and says no, but the additional cost is not worth it to him. There it is in a nut shell I say. What worth do you place on things you enjoy? He likes to cut his lawn, has the top of the line Cub Cadet tractor. I ask him why he spent 3 times what a sears craftsman tractor could do and he replied because it cuts better. Point was made.

Like most kids, I guess, I used to hear "turn it down" when I was younger (which, of course, usually led to me turning it up:p), so I just thought it would be one of those things that I used to hear from my parents that eventually would come out of my mouth. Something like, "You're going to sit there until all those vegetables are gone!" or "Stop it, or somebody's going to get hurt." So, I always laugh a little when my kids tell me it's too loud, and they're 13 through 18!

I like the one from my wife "ok this is it now right?". Well then I turned to you all and showed how far I have yet to go... [ok I get why you might not like the reference] and thanks for setting the bar.

I like to point out to guys who are more interested in the size of their video/TV then the performance of their audio system that when you turn the sound off for any really scary movie [I don't like scary movies BTW] all the "scare" goes away. The movie becomes as interesting as a show on preserving kumquats. Why? Cause its ALL in the audio! Audio deserves more attention then video period.

Look at it this way....If you played a movie, turned the video part off and just listened to the audio, your imagination could fill it in. If you reversed it,watched the video and turned the audio off, you would go nuts. Which is more important then? Also, like reading a book, there's no video but your imagination. Maybe it's the way our brains process information. The video part completes it but is not necessary. The audio part pulls it all together.

That depends on the subject matter. If its a **** movie the video is far more important. Try hearing just the sounds without the video and see which is more important to you :p

My favorite has to be "Why would you listen to record's when you can listen to the same songs on your phone"

This is my time to vent! I always get crap from the women, because I'm a woman about how can I stand those big speakers dominating the room! Then I tell them I think they're beautiful and basically give my piss off look. Then I end up spending the remainder of the evening and weeks and numerous E-mails later educating their husbands about audio. Then after picking my brain like scavengers, they end up purchasing some system made by that company whose name sounds like "blows", I become enraged and explode and the rest you say is history. I honestly don't know why I bother giving advice, but I love this hobby so much, my passion overwhelms me. I'm always hoping to find a convert. Sorry, just had to let that out! DJ

We all have those people in our lives. The ones who don't understand. They have no interest and they can't understand why you do. That doesn't stop them from asking questions though! They ask some real boneheaded ones too. Sometimes, they can really get under your skin.

So out of all the questions you get asked about audio, what's the one that really cooks your turkey?

For me, I think it's hearing "Why do you need that?" Well, buddy/toots/pal, I don't NEED it. Just like you don't need to be dropping $7 a pack on cigarettes or like you don't need a Corvette or a wine collection or a personal arsenal worth of firearms. I don't question your motives for whatever you have/do that I think is stupid so don't question mine. It's a hobby that I find enjoyable and relaxing. That's all the reason I need.
What do you mean? I definetly need my arsenal! It aids in the elimination of people who ask stupid questions about why I do anything that improves my quality of life and my pursuit of happiness!

:D ROTFLMAO!!! It's not easy being a woman in this hobby is it DJ?

I always get looked at crosseyed when I try to explain why I love it so.

What you should do is when they start picking your brain, state right up front that if they are going to just turn around & buy a Bose system, then don't bother wasting your time eplaining things that they are simply going to ignore it all to spend thousands of dollars on something that is so inadequate.

Good luck in finding a convert!
