We all have those people in our lives. The ones who don't understand. They have no interest and they can't understand why you do. That doesn't stop them from asking questions though! They ask some real boneheaded ones too. Sometimes, they can really get under your skin.

So out of all the questions you get asked about audio, what's the one that really cooks your turkey?

For me, I think it's hearing "Why do you need that?" Well, buddy/toots/pal, I don't NEED it. Just like you don't need to be dropping $7 a pack on cigarettes or like you don't need a Corvette or a wine collection or a personal arsenal worth of firearms. I don't question your motives for whatever you have/do that I think is stupid so don't question mine. It's a hobby that I find enjoyable and relaxing. That's all the reason I need.
Actually, I do need my arsenal of weapons. First, I live too close to Philly to not defend my home and family. Second, when people see the holster on my waist they don't ask dumb questions about why I choose to do someting that improves my life and pursuit of happiness!

    Oh bloody hell!

Listen, to you fools who are going on about your sensibilities regarding your "personal arsenals", get your panties out of a wad.

When I made the statement it was in reference to the fact that you don't NEED all of those weapons. You WANT them. If you are going to use the inane idea of home defense as your rationale then fine. But a gun is not a necessity because a knife, baseball bat, golf club or any number of other items not necessarily considered a weapon can be quite effective at the task of "home defense".

The same goes for me. Do I need a pickup truck that can outrun most sports cars? No, I don't. But I have one. Why? Because I ENJOY it. For the same reason I do not need 11 computers in my house but, I have them and I enjoy using them and doing things with them that others cannot.

So you all can take your stupid gun arguments and cram them. As for me, I have my own guns of which I will not speak of in a public forum. I am a lifetime member of the NRA and, for a long while, I was a certified rifle instructor for the Boy Scouts of America and made a pretty good dime running rifle ranges for various scout camps in the area during their summer camp programs. I have earned numerous awards regarding shooting sports from both the NRA and the Boy Scouts. I can pick a gnat off the backside of a horse at 1K yards with my .22. I also grew up in and around Camden, NJ. Telling me Philly scares you is laughable in my eyes. You don't like Philly? Move. Then again, "close to Philly" could mean West Chester which is one of the most benign, white-bread neighborhoods out there.

    I'm not anti-gun, I'm anti-rationalization.

So the gun talk stops here, NOW. Capiche? Anyone who continues with the butt-hurt posts, I will report. It's not open for discussion and against the rules here.

I think fine stereo has always walked hand in hand with being heavily armed.

Music is about a quality of living, and persons who seek as much as they can from living will certainly wish to protect it. There are no car jackings, and very few home invasions in Montana.

    >>>>>>>>>

My old man once opined that the company whose name rhymed with nose was on the forefront of speaker technology.....I just let it lay.

By far the number one comment about the stereo system is, "Why does it have to be so loud?" It doesn't, though I've noticed for many people music is just something that always goes on in the background, like elevator musak or the sound of traffic, and is never taken seriously. Drone on.

    I've got a couple...
While riding with a buddy from my high school days who has several k in car audio. "Why do you spend money on all that stuff for your house?" "Because I'm not 25 years old and living with my parents."

Also, "How does your fiancee live with those things everywhere?" "She uses them too..."

And, "Why don't you just get a soundbar?" "...silence..."

One that didn't annoy me at all, was my buddy's wife: "If we give you free reign and a target budget, will you set up our living room?" Answer: "Yes."

    I get that A LOT!!!

Reminds me of a moment about a month ago while I was in the Goodwill Store doing my weekly check for cheap electronics -

A young kid, definitely under the age of 5, picks up a vinyl record that happened to be out of its sleeve. He then goes up to his mom and says "Look mommy, a CD!" His mom failed to correct him...:( I actually got a good chuckle out of it though!

My friends quit asking questions after they sat down and actually "listened" to my set up. Funny how I just wanted them to sample a song or two but they then insist I play the whole cd. Unfortunatley they rarely listen to music and just use it as background sound.
My sister summed it up best when replying to my teenage niece..."Your Uncle Bert(thats me) has a problem, that's all".

The funniest question I hear has been already mentioned is...They still make records? This can often be heard coming from a person that does not own any vinyl but still calls the latest artist release a "new album".

Technically, they are still albums.;) From Wikiworld:

Today, with the vinyl record no longer being used as the primary form of distribution, the term "album" can still be applied to any sound recording collection, such as those on compact disc, MiniDisc, Compact audio cassette, and digital or MP3 albums. Cover art is also considered an integral part of the album. Many albums also come with liner notes and inserts giving background information or analysis of the recording, reprinted lyrics, images of the performers, or additional artwork and text.

That just means you're old and stubborn. :p
    al·bum

    –noun
    1.
a bound or loose-leaf book consisting of blank pages, pockets, envelopes, etc., for storing or displaying photographs, stamps, or the like, or for collecting autographs.
    2.
a phonograph record or set of records containing several musical selections, a complete play, opera, etc.: Her album of folk songs will be out next month.
    3.
the package or container for such a record or records: The album has a pocket for each record.

    4.
a printed book containing an anthology of writings, reproductions of photographs or artwork, musical compositions, etc.

    re·cord

    –verb (used with object)
    1.
to set down in writing or the like, as for the purpose of preserving evidence.
    2.
to cause to be set down or registered: to record one's vote.
    3.
to state or indicate: He recorded his protest, but it was disregarded.
    4.
to serve to relate or to tell of: The document records that the battle took place six years earlier.
    5.
to set down or register in some permanent form, as on a seismograph.
    6.
to set down, register, or fix by characteristic marks, incisions, magnetism, etc., for the purpose of reproduction by a phonograph or magnetic reproducer.

    7.
to make a recording of: The orchestra recorded the 6th Symphony.

Funny, all the old people use record and album interchangeably and refuse to acknowledge that any other medium can be a record or recording of an artist's work or that an artist's work can be contained within an album, regardless of the media used to store the work.

Just because society incorrectly uses a term as a household or slang term doesn't mean society is correct.

Another one that springs to mind that I keep seeing more and more of is motor vs. engine. Especially on automotive blogs that you would think would know better. An engine is capable of producing power from a fuel source. It converts potential energy, like gasoline or diesel fuel to mechanical (i.e.: kinetic) energy. It can generate it's own power from a fuel source. Where as a motor only changes one form of kinetic energy in to another as in when an electric motor takes electrical current (i.e.: electrical energy) and changes it in to mechanical energy to create movement. In other words, your Toyota Camry (non-Hybrid) has many electric motors but it is powered by an internal combustion engine.

Is all this wrong? Not necessarily. I mean, after all, popular opinion and common usage does mutate language. How do you think "ain't" got in to the dictionary? Ultimately, it won't be "wrong" per se but until the scientific world decides to give in to the masses and relax the definitions, it is an inaccurate statement to say that a CD is not an album of recordings because it isn't made of PVC and the media isn't read by a thin metal stick.

yep, set in my ways and staying there!

another one is calling a rifle a gun. My dad was a small arms instructor in the USAF for 20+ years and if you want to get under his skin just mention his "guns" hanging on the basement wall! Yes, I know Wiki prbably has something to say about this too...but my dad would say those are rifles on the wall and you can find guns on the ships his brother served on in the USN.

To each his own......I did have a chuckle last night when I pulled out the Toys In The Attic album and realized it was a big 10" record and not 12. duh.....

...up yours. The definitions came from a dictionary. You know, one of those big book thingys with definitions of words in them? Not any "Wiki".

Sorry for backing up my statements with published facts. I used to be called a liar and a blowhard because I just posted what I knew and didn't back it up, even though it was easily verifiable and correct. Now I get people telling me I find all the info at Wikipedia just because I use references in my posts. Can't win either way. It'd be nice if more people did what I do and found out how wrong they were BEFORE they posted and whined when corrected. Hell, I've done it, realized I was off and just didn't post instead of running my mouth. That's usually why I'm rarely wrong. Because I check what I'm writing first.

Just to be a stickler, the Navy has it's own language. In the English language, a gun is:

    gun

    -noun
    1. a weapon consisting of a metal tube, with mechanical attachments, from which projectiles are shot by the force of an explosive; a piece of ordnance.
    2. any portable firearm, as a rifle, shotgun, or revolver.
    3. a long-barreled cannon having a relatively flat trajectory.
    4. any device for shooting something under pressure: a paint gun; a staple gun.
    5. Slang . a person whose profession is killing; professional killer: a gangland gun.
    6. British . a member of a shooting party.
    7. electron gun.

    ri·fle

    –noun
    1. a shoulder firearm with spiral grooves cut in the inner surface of the gun barrel to give the bullet a rotatory motion and thus a more precise trajectory.
    2. one of the grooves.
    3. a cannon with such grooves.
    4. ( often initial capital letter ) rifles, any of certain military units or bodies equipped with rifles.

Therefore a rifle is a gun but a gun is not necessarily a rifle.

The other Navy thing that always bugged me is the definition of a boat vs. a ship. In the Navy a ship floats ON the water and a boat goes UNDER the water.

In the English language though, a boat is defined as:

    boat

    –noun
    1. a vessel for transport by water, constructed to provide buoyancy by excluding water and shaped to give stability and permit propulsion.
    2. a small ship, generally for specialized use: a fishing boat.
    3. a small vessel carried for use by a large one, as a lifeboat: They lowered the boats for evacuation.
    4. a ship.
    5. a vessel of any size built for navigation on a river or other inland body of water.
    6. a serving dish resembling a boat: a gravy boat; a celery boat.
    7. Ecclesiastical . a container for holding incense before it is placed in the censer.

So another stick in the Naval eye is that a boat is a small ship. Whether they like it or not.
