for me, it's not the questions, it's the "but of course you should know" tone when they say "an ipod sounds just as good"

this has to be the audiophile version of when you tell them "if you have to ask, you'll never get it."

I do my best never to talk about how much I've spent on my system -- even to friends and family unless they really want to know. I just want them to enjoy the tunes and not have their opinion colored by dollar signs.

Three things and only one is a ?

    1. When I tell them my speakers are almost as big as their office door they say wow you must really like your music loud.

    2. When I tell them that I have xxxx K worth of audio gear their eyebrows rise and they look at you with this look in their eye like you must have lost your mind and say OK and the conversation comes to a halt.

    3. When I tell them that I have a music collection of over 2000 CD's they say but WHY?

    REGARDS SNOW
Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

I always get the stupid Boze analogy....they sound just as good and are alot smaller...blah, blah. I always return with " when was the last time you had your hearing checked?" Yep, I also get that whole Ipod crap too, computer this or that. Been called foolish for investing so much in old technology,as they put it. Whatever,no use argueing with morons.....just that I know 20 years from now, these same people will be seeking out stuff we have now, maybe even older.

Just yesterday my friend who has HTIB asked why I had my system when his sounded just as good and you can only play it so loud. My wife said it is better and it's not about how loud it's about hearing it sound so clear and crisp. She blew me away. And I just have a small system.

Why are you always on club Polk and not paying me any attention??

Do you really need speaker cables the size of a garden hose?

Why did you lie to me? Do you really think I'm that stupid that I wouldn't notice a new amp in your stereo??

You know, I've sat here thinking about it - and I can't say that I've ever been asked too many annoying questions when people come over to hear the system. If anything, the only annoying question is: "Wow, where'd you get the money for all this?". Tis when I smile and say "Thats why I drive an old car".

^^^Same can go for alot of us. ^^^

Or just be thrifty in some other area. No smoking, drinking habits.
Hobbies are money suckers and all we did was pick audio as one of our many and some people ONLY HAVE audio so their systems are REALLY nicer.;):D

Well I was asked "what do you do with it?" "Do you just sit there and listen?"

I felt like "yea, that's all I dooo" "like a bump on a log, sit and twiddle my fingers""and listen"

I had visions of Nurse Rachet telling me turn the music down, I was disturbing the other patients with my taste of songchoices. Let's FUNK up the community hall tonight.:D

    I've heard that one.
I said I like looking at the jewel cases. The way the sun shines through them gives me memories of days gone buy..:p:eek: .......The other p.. oH......kA
And I knew a guy whoose computer device crashed and he lost hundreds of hours of programing time...GONE. I know technology is getting better but I'll sit tight for now.

I like the artwork on the albums to. I like art, don't you? the other p.. well......not really I guess....I just like the songs.

I'll end it hear for now. There's a bunch more I could think of like how many watts does it put out?
I hate that one. But now I can say 3000 watts per channel. And their face sometimes is so funny to watch as they calculate something in the head and then ask How many watts per channel again?
3000. silence for a few seconds...Is that even possible? ....I think so... there is a review where they said it put that out.....WOW,,,COOL,,REALLY?
Yes, really, it is supposed to.:)

    Sorry for my rant.

Agreed, except for the no drinking. You would have to drink a lot to interfere with this hobby. :D

The example I like to use is a comparison to general aviation as a hobby. If I wanted a pilot license that was only good in acceptable weather conditions (VFR) I could easily spend $7,000 or more, and 6 to 12 months of my time, to get a pilot license. Then it would only cost me $100/hour, or so, to use the license. If I wanted to fly anytime, in any weather, then an IFR license is needed. Of course, this costs approximately the same as getting a VFR license, and the planes are more expensive to rent/buy/own.

On the other hand, I can get a good stereo for $7,000 and, in essence, use it for free. Or for a nominal cost, 24/7.
Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable
Sony XA-5400ES SACD; Pass XP-22 pre; X600.5 amps
Magico S5 MKII Mcast Rose speakers; SPOD spikes

Shunyata Triton v3/Typhon QR on source, Denali 2000 (2) on amps
Shunyata Sigma XLR analog ICs, Sigma speaker cables
Shunyata Sigma HC (2), Sigma Analog, Sigma Digital, Z Anaconda (3) power cables

Mapleshade Samson V.3 four shelf solid maple rack, Micropoint brass footers
    Three 20 amp circuits.

Why is my stereo more expensive than my plasma/lcd tv?

I always ask: Why did you spend $2000 on your tv and $300 on your HTIB?
