    muncybob,

I've known a lot of guys like your dad, I got a real kick out of hearing it. For what's it worth, our older Webster's New World Dict. defines gun as stated above, but then reads, "2. Technically, a relatively heavy weapon with a long barrel fixed in a mount."

I view it as an insult to my character. It's called in to question here far too often by people who are lacking in character themselves. Just because I use a handy, searchable reference to corroborate my claims, I get dragged through the mud over it. In college, such citing of references was required and looked upon favorably. Yet still I am told that I am using the info as my own and think I know everything. One of a more rational mind would probably think the opposite and see that posting of a reference is admission that the poster doesn't know everything. But no, not here at Club Polk. No sir! Blissful ignorance is the name of the game and anyone who tries to have some semblance of living in reality and being aware of their surroundings is dismissed as a nattering nabob of negativity. (for all you Spiro Agnew fans out there)

Sorry if you feel that my attitude is unjustified and I apologize for firing my guns across your bow but you're not the first to marginalize a factual post with a condescending response that is dismissive of a valid reference of factual and/or expert testimony for or against the topic at hand. You're just the latest one to do it and therefore draws the ire even if it's not necessarily deserved. I'm also not the only one it happens to either. Just look at any "debate" that has degraded in to childish BS like the cable debates, the arguments over Bob Carver, CDs vs. LPs, tubes vs. solid state, etc... You'll find the dismissive attitudes and marginalization of accepted factual documents and expert testimony in any of those brawls. It's almost like research, scientific methods, intelligence and eloquence are punished and looked down upon in favor of what is commonly "believed" even if it is wrong and I think it sucks.

yep, set in my ways and staying there!

another one is calling a rifle a gun. My dad was a small arms instructor in the USAF for 20+ years and if you want to get under his skin just mention his "guns" hanging on the basement wall! Yes, I know Wiki prbably has something to say about this too...but my dad would say those are rifles on the wall and you can find guns on the ships his brother served on in the USN.

To each his own......I did have a chuckle last night when I pulled out the Toys In The Attic album and realized it was a big 10" record and not 12. duh.....

For what it's worth, I saw no insult to your character in the posts by muncybob (although perhaps there's a back-story here, and I missed an otherwise obvious slight). All I saw was some (what I perceived as) good-natured, back-and-forth banter. As far as I'm concerned, Jstas, your character is still perfectly intact. Anyhow, this was an entertaining thread until it was slightly derailed. Despite this, I hope others will continue to add some witty responses to the question you initially posed. :)

Well, I served aboard the luxury cruise ship USS Oriskany , CVA-34 (30,000 tons)

    USS_Oriskany_CV-34_SCB-125A.jpg

and it was always called, "The O-Boat", so .......

Well, not always. Sometimes it was called "The Toasted O" by its crew because in 1966

    Oriskany fire.jpg

it was demonstrated that one should not ignite magnesium flares and throw them into munitions lockers. 44 crew members died in that one.

That was a couple of years before my time, but it warped the keel. Get above about 20 knots and the hull would sing.

In any event, I figure the Navy's earned the right to call their boats any darned thing they want.
So ..... funk Funk & Wagnalls. (and yeah, Funk & Wagnalls is an encyclopedia, not a dictionary, but ..... sue me ;) )

They finally sank the O-Boat somewhere off the Florida Keys a couple of years ago.

Better fate, IMO, than winding up as razor blades.

I really dislike writing this, but I think it needs to be said.

Jstas, you really take things to another level. You can disagree and communicate that disagreement all you want, but at least have some tact and manners. Don’t get me wrong, I essentially agree with everything you’ve said, but when you say “up yours” and “screw you” before all of those great points…no one is going to take you seriously.

To be blunt, older members who essentially “attack” newbies on this forum is pretty disappointing (and almost primal). You may spend a lot of time on here, but that doesn’t mean you own the Polk forum. This isn’t your turf. It’s OUR community. There’s really no need to be territorial (even if you’re the creator of the thread – it’s sad that I even have to mention this).

My suggestion to you, Jstas: Try using a little social intelligence in helping you navigate the difference between an insult and a non-threatening observation.

Listen everybody; I wouldn’t speak up if I didn’t see an emerging pattern. Jstas, I’ve read your historical post and they really paint the picture of a bully.

Ease it up pal, and don’t be “that guy,” which is readily found on other forums.

I worked with two guys that were previously sub-mariners (every sub-mariner I ever met was nuts) and if you called anything but a submarine a boat they would give you this long lecture between a boat and a ship. If you said boat again while referring to a ship they would have a fit.

Could you accept I have no Ox To Be Gored in this thread, don't really know anyone, and am about as neutral as a newbie can be? Your character cannot be changed by anyone in this forum. It is yours. Good, bad, indifferent-you make your own decisions. You are not responsible for what other people say, and you are bashing your head against the wall because their responses are not what you'd always like. That's life.

You made your points about firearms, (which I don't agree with-but who cares?) and then concluded any other opinion regarding them was just a rationalization. Worse, you threatened with being reported to anyone who brought it up again.

A single poster mentioned Wikipedia, and you refer to this as, 'being dragged through the mud." Don't you think that's an overreaction?

I read the rules. Many of the threads here do not technically belong- apparently, there is some 'grace' being afforded to this forum by Polk, I'd guess because of the general tightness, the intelligence, and the decency of the group. If forumites go down the path of reporting one another, I don't believe this forum will remain as wonderful a place as it is. Everyone will lose.

I can't believe anyone here objects to your documentation and lucid writing.
    You obviously have friends here.

Please take my words in the spirit they were offered.
