What is the most annoying question non-audio people ask you?

We all have those people in our lives. The ones who don't understand. They have no interest and they can't understand why you do. That doesn't stop them from asking questions though! They ask some real boneheaded ones too. Sometimes, they can really get under your skin.

So out of all the questions you get asked about audio, what's the one that really cooks your turkey?

For me, I think it's hearing "Why do you need that?" Well, buddy/toots/pal, I don't NEED it. Just like you don't need to be dropping $7 a pack on cigarettes or like you don't need a Corvette or a wine collection or a personal arsenal worth of firearms. I don't question your motives for whatever you have/do that I think is stupid so don't question mine. It's a hobby that I find enjoyable and relaxing. That's all the reason I need.

Why? Because if they don't, Vito and "Fingers" will pay them a visit and make them an offer they can't refuse.

"Why do you need speakers that big?" (in reference to my RTi-10's.)

First off, they aren't that big. And secondly, can you not HEAR the difference between this and your pos HTIB? Apparently not...

I don't have the ears some of you guys have, but wow. I don't see how the question can even be asked...

Just show people pictures of those of us crazy enough to own Amazings. Mainly because I don't think anyone here owns a pair of Altec Lansing VOT's or some other folded horn speaker. The RTi-10's would look positively puny next to those beasts.

What do you have?... and before you can even begin they cut you off to explain either their HTIB or their parents def tech system.

Recently I was back for a friends wedding and a high school acquaintance was there and the topic of speakers came up... he pulled exactly what I stated above and talked up and down about his "theatre quality" system he put together from working at best buy (not even magnolia) of course... def tech tiny surrounds he had mounted above his tv for his fronts... amazing and as stated above... this was a system he built for his parents with their money... :)

That is a vaild question. A BRP should be able to play CDs, SACDS, DVDs, and provide a first-rate BR experience.

It's not so much the questions they ask, it's that they completely ignore whatever advice I give.

I had a friend who was building a house and wanted to know what in-wall speakers to put in his home theater room. I told him that it was hard to beat Polk's offerings when it comes to bang for the buck. He then asked me about Bose speakers, and I went into the spiel about how it's all marketing and their speakers are inferior and cost more than something like a Polk speaker. We spent a good 30 minutes talking and I thought I got through to him.

Fast forward three weeks later, and he tells me he bought all Bose speakers. He said the guy at the audio store said they were the best, so he bought them.

OK, it's not my money to spend, and people have a right to buy whatever they want. But, if you're just going to ignore my advice and do whatever the guy on commission tells you, why waste your time and mine?!

I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

Most of the time they ask me why I need to have a setup like I do. I tell them because I can.

I do have to say at one time I did the same thing to my friend. I talked up my little AVR and he kept his mouth shut and said "That is nice" or "Good for you". Then I went over to his house for a party, I was then introduced to good audio equipment. Changed my life for ever.

Hah, exactly. I immediately thought of the larger SDA's I've seen, and my first thought was "well my 10's aren't that big."

And I'd love to hear some Amazings in person. I've always loved the look of them.

What's even worse? Somebody asking why I spent $600 on
HEADPHONES. The speaker thing most of them get.

I actually don't mind those questions. Just because I love there faces when I crank up the stereo and they finally hear music how it is supposed to sound. I have had people say they didn't know certain instruments were even in songs until they heard them on my system.

I guess the one that sorta gets my goat is "You own a record player?" Yes I do, it sounds better than your CD's and is way cooler looking than an iPod sitting on my stereo. But I digress.

sucks2beme, you paid 600 hundred for headphones? What kind are they? Grado?

Not a question. Most people who actually inquire are amazed I would spend 'X' dollars on the gear. Especially for items such as cables, or brass footers for vibration elimination. Of course, they will say things like, "That really sounds good. You spent WHAT!!!!"

You know, I've sat here thinking about it - and I can't say that I've ever been asked too many annoying questions when people come over to hear the system. If anything, the only annoying question is: "Wow, where'd you get the money for all this?". Tis when I smile and say "Thats why I drive an old car".

In my case an old truck. I bought a newer one with minor cosmetic damage but it's in the body shop waiting on money to finish the repairs. The repair money went for Thiels, Polk, Klipsch, and Grace. See, my priorities are in order!!
