Yep, until he opened his wings, I wasn’t quite sure.

No, but he did impede the start time of my baby backs …. er, uh … smoked carrots a little while I finagled the cover off with him on it!

He sat out in the sun there for a couple hours and either flew away, or … got eaten while I wasn’t looking.

It is a moth. Note the feathered antennae.
My knee-jerk ID was cecropia moth, but I don't think that is what it is.

    EDIT: It is gorgeous.
    my current guess:

Cecropia moths are very colorful, very attractive, and very large.

... and just to insure that eveyone has a peaceful, restful night's sleep with sweet dreams, the larval (caterpillar) stage of the cecropia.

Yoiks, Doc, those look like those things that decimate tomato plants.

Side note: Anyone else noticing that smaller images are being upscaled on the page? When I quote image posts, I try to resize quoted images down to 300-400px to reduce footprint, but they're being upscaled to fill post width, it seems.

That is quite possibly the moth I had on my garage siding once upon a time. As you said the feathered antennae give them away.

They do indeed resemble the tomato hornworm... but note, they're... umm, how to put this? Not horn-y.

The little spike-y thing on the aft end of the hornworm caterpillar (and the row of spots/spiracles on the side) are diagnostic. Plus, munchin' on 'mater plants, of course. :#
    Cecropia moths are nice. :)

Great Monty Python sketch on banter. Not readily available "in the public domain", though, unfortunately.

FWIW -- my wife has much more faith in brakes than do I. Perhaps that's because she didn't spend her formative years driving a 1974 Ford Bronco -- a rather heavy little vehicle with not particularly large drum brakes all the way around. ;)
