Lots of nice stuff. Looks like even a Marantz 8 or 8B peekin' out from behind one of those Duplexes :)

I am a big 8B fan. Nice, nice sounding amplifier (especially given that it's PP EL34).

Found this vintage integrated amp amongst my dad's collection last weekend.
    Pioneer SA-8100:

I did some testing/cleaning on it, so partially naked and in an awkward position in the pic. Based on initial tests, I think this will sound very nice once re-habbed a bit more.

@jdjohn that is the same integrated I bought in 1973 for my first system. It had an aggressive loudness contour and I often had to turn it off after my roommates listened to it.

    jdjohn Posts: 2,973
Aggressive, for sure. The entire complement of tone control adjustments is somewhat daunting. Luckily, they are stepped attenuators instead of pots, so not terribly noisy. But there is a little scratchiness somewhere that I am still chasing. Cleaning the volume and balance pots helped a lot, and showed me the potential this unit has. This unit has seen better days, but I think it still has some life left in it :)

The 721 is a direct-drive, so much less complicated. It is well-worth fixing, as it was Dual's TOTL direct-drive...much quieter than their idler and belt-drive tt's.

First thing to try is cleaning the fine-pitch potentiometer with DeOxit.

I call BS. A man with real time in the joint would know they are called 'shanks'...not knives :p I've seen movies and stuff.

    Thanks!

The plasticky base had me wondering; but the walnut finish, spring suspension, and tonearm seem top notch, as you say.

There were always 'options' when purchasing new turntables, so the plinth/base was one such option. Yours has the 'tray' option, but here is one (mine :) ) that has the wooden plinth option.
    3cazk5lk0rg1.jpg
The (suspended) chassis is the same for both, but the base/plinth is different. The included cartridge was another option.

One nice feature of the 721 is that the tonearm counter-weight had more advanced anti-resonance properties. In fact, the stock counter-weight on a 721 (and same design from a few other models) is considered an upgrade to counter-weights on earlier Dual turntables with similar fittings.
