That's cool Vic. I was actually prepared for, and gave my son the go ahead to pay a lot more, but I'm still very happy, going to see Tool, again, with my son! :)

Wait a second... Taylor Swift has fans? ;)

I haven't gotten around to listening to any of Tools albums yet. I've been thinking about it since this thread was started. Sometime this week probably :)

  • I just checked the price of the new album on Amazon. People are selling it for $150-$200! Really?! It seems crazy they didn't expect this kind of demand and print a lot more copies. Regardless, while there I noticed you can stream if for free if you have Amazon Prime. I'd rather spin a shiny disc though...

They did expect this kind of demand. It was always advertised as limited. And Tool has always used "limited" as part of their image and plan. Maynard has even stated in interviews that you never give fans everything they want. Always leave them wanting more. It adds to the fan culture and commitment.

After 13 years waiting for a new album, and baiting us along for the last few years with "any day now", I'd say they haven't given Tool fans what they want. lol Personally, I think it's a horrible way to treat your loyal fans after so long... "It's out, but sorry, you can't get a copy!" Ridiculous, imo.

It doesn't mean that no future versions are out of the question. Childish Gambino did a similar thing with this last vinyl release. Had a limited box set that was above normal pricing, and was actually limited. Then over a year later the standard vinyl pressing came out. It's very possible we see a standard CD press months down the road, especially if the demand stays high.

Download the high-res version from HDTracks. I was just there getting two new CDs, and Tool is still there for $18.
Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable
Sony XA-5400ES SACD; Pass XP-22 pre; X600.5 amps
Magico S5 MKII Mcast Rose speakers; SPOD spikes

Shunyata Triton v3/Typhon QR on source, Denali 2000 (2) on amps
Shunyata Sigma XLR analog ICs, Sigma speaker cables
Shunyata Sigma HC (2), Sigma Analog, Sigma Digital, Z Anaconda (3) power cables

Mapleshade Samson V.3 four shelf solid maple rack, Micropoint brass footers
    Three 20 amp circuits.
  • I get the concept, displayname, but it could also backfire on them. I know a couple people who are ticked off by the "exclusivity" of the release. I'm less ticked and more just scratching my head about the whole thing. A solid album will build a MUCH stronger fan base than any limited release trickery scheme, imho. You're probably right though, another release will be on the way soon enough. Anyway... dead horse and all...

Bluefix - Yeah, I might end up getting the digital, but I like to have the physical and then rip it myself for my Plex library. Best of both worlds.

The problem there is a ripped CD is still only 44/16 sound versus the 96/24 sound quality from HDTracks.

True, except for the fact that most Tool fans are probably in their mid/late 40's or older, and they're probably less on the digital train than the youngsters. Physical media is a great backup, you get the artwork, the liner notes, and you can hold it. Maybe my age is showing. Ha!
