Wow...I would have soiled my drawers

The Federal Aviation Administration said a Delta Airlines flight from Boston made an emergency landing in Denver after a hail storm damaged the plane.

FAA spokesman Ian McGregor told The Denver Post that the plane landed safely at Denver International Airport at 8:42 p.m. on Friday. The flight’s destination was Salt Lake City International Airport.

“I fly constantly and this was the scariest 10 minutes of my life,” Robin Jones, a passenger, told Fox 13 after arriving at the Salt Lake airport early Saturday morning. “I thought, ‘OK. Have I told everybody that I love that I love them?’ And as soon as I realized I had done that, I was like, ‘I’m alright. Everything’s going to be OK.’”

    Gorgeous shots!

Are those from this evening's sunset in New Hampshire?

Sometimes our unsettled weather produces a terrible kind of beauty, especially at sunset.

30 seconds' worth of the ISS's flyover ca. 9:18 pm tonight -- just as it disappeared into the trees.

    @mhardy6647,

Are you going to try to catch the meteor shower tonight?

My wife and I tried last night between midnight and 1:00am, but I saw only four meteors and Lisa only one. We were a bit disappointed because it had been billed as a more spectacular "shower".

I suspect your night sky is much darker in the north country. Night glow of Hampton really affects our sky.

Yeah, we saw a few Weds and Thurs night; wasn't really that great in terms of numbers; which is really too bad because the viewing conditions -- 'specially last night -- were superb.

We did see one pretty bright and long lasting one Wednesday night, which almost made up for the low numbers.

Is that headlights or flash or what on the right? I used to do astro stuff through a 8" scope on film and hope to use the digi on some night stuff soon. What was the aperture on that one? Thanks both mom and dad are very attractive. I'm not into guys but as a photographer you respect the ones that are easy to photograph. Mom is just hot after 3 kids.

It's the motion-detector lights on the garage. I was too lazy to go out through another door and procrastinated too long goin' out for the lights to have had a chance to turn off before I started shootin' :-P

I took some of the earlier photos of the set with the camera panned a bit more to the west. I actually didn't need to move it at all with the super-wide angle lens I was using (Sigma 10 - 20 mm zoom on a DX format Nikon DSLR) :- )

You certainly have a lot more stars in your sky than we do up here. But then again, we're walking distance from our small town and there is some light pollution.

I suppose some of that is also your exposure, no? More time, more light(s)?

Rick, just how much Viagra/Cialis are you taking? lol

yes, longer exposure time will reveal dimmer objects. The exposure is cumulative; eventually enough photons strike the sensor (or film!) to result in a signal (image).

... but, yeah, the night sky here on a clear, moonless night is pretty darned good. Last night was a good "Milky Way night" as I like to call 'em.

This isn't from last night (it's from last summer, in fact) -- but it illustrates the point :- )

When we moved to New Hampshire's seacoast region in 1997, we had night skies like the one in your picture from last summer.

I had not realized how much things have changed till my wife and I went out to view the Perseid meteor shower on Wednesday night/Thursday morning.

As a member of our town's planning board, I've tried to promote a "dark-sky standard," but that doesn't help much when the light pollution is from neighboring towns. :)

Now there is a lot that bird don't know, but it don't change the fact that the world is happening to him all the same. Was enjoying the Sunday morning stillness when all of the back yard birds scattered in a flurry of wings.

Then one, then TWO sharp skinned hawks flew in to perch in the neighbor's tree.

I managed to get a semi-decent shot of one of them from the kitchen window.

    That's sharp-shinned :- )

Also -- FWIW -- that's a juvenile hawk; the adults have a very different color scheme (as you probably know).

Actually, I cannot tell if that's a sharpie or a Cooper's Hawk -- they look just about identical, but the sharpies are smaller. The male sharpie is just a little bigger than most songbirds. Way more attitude, though. :- )

Here's a male sharpie -- a photo I took through my wife's spotting scope with a little digital point and shoot at our old house in MA many years ago. The adult female looks the same, but is larger. The male & female (adult) Coopers also look like this, but are larger still (and there are some other differences, but they're fairly subtle).

I posted my pic on a birder forum - most 'expert' opinions are that these are a sharp 'shinned' (my bad) hawk.

    They'd know! :- )

It's all about the size (well, as I said, there are things like the shape of the tail & how much of a "neck" one species has vs. the other) -- I am perfectly willing to believe it's a sharpie.

Somewhere I have some photos of juveniles -- we had both species in MA; mostly we have Coopers' here.
