she is scared that I'm going to get raped by someone there because I've never seen or meet you guys in person....

so if theres any of that type of stuff going let me know now, so that way I can just tell her up front rather than having her freak out if I go...

    Thanks..

and no I'm not joking this was a serious convo between her and I last night..

Awe 'cmon Chris, really? Raped!?! Did she the read this thread and take some of the goofy stuff seriously? Is that where this is coming from?

    Say what!?!

No one is getting raped. This is an audio gathering, we listen to music, BS, eat good food and some folks drink too much. That's it.

I know I tried to explain that, she just thinks its a "danger" to meet people online and then to an audio gathering where I've never meet the people in person. I think its over the top on being concerned and I am a grown man, I do know when the whole stranger danger would come into play....
You have got to be kidding,,seriously.

yes I am dead serious, hell when there was a tornado warning in my area she freaked out and started calling me non stop to find out if I knew and was ok...and I've been through enough warnings, and tornados to know what to do...but yeah 5 phone calls in 3 minutes...

I hear ya, and Imagine there are idiots that actually have them over there own homes and......oh ****, wait :D

dude, have her call me. I am employing a full on "no rape" policy at Polkfest fully enforced by my 290 lbs of justice.

now cuddling and ball cupping? thats a whole different animal. (I am SOOOOO not helping here am I)

seriously dude, we talk alot of smack, but in truth...wild and crazy we really ain't. every year the most risque we get is when Mark get's a little tipsey and inevitably winds up on my lap telling me what he wants for christmas. He's adorable

Dude, let me let you in on a little secret about ClubPolk...well, the Internet in general really. Here on the Internet, people talk a good game. Why? Lotsa reasons. In reality though, nothing like they are on the Internet. Hell, I've attended PolkFests in the past AT Polk HQ. Prior to going I have been "called out" and even threatened and when I have met the one making the threats, if they bothered to show up at all, face to face, they run with their tail between their legs or say "Hey man, it was a joke! lighten up!" Then they laugh nervously and go find some Kool Aid to drink.

The Internet is not populated with psychos, ax murderers and Chesters like you see in the movies or sensationalized in the news. The Internet is full of regular people. The problem is that regular people are more screwed up than you can possibly imagine. They are more open about how twisted they are on the Internet because they live behind a keyboard and monitor where nobody else can see them. In person, many realize that their mouth has written a check that their butt either can't cash or doesn't want to cash.

All this talk about sleeping arrangements, attire and odd things with flora and fauna are just that, talk. It's people **** around. Some don't know where the line is but for the most part, it's just **** around. Besides, Lou wouldn't let anything like that happen anyway and since most here fear Lou, I doubt you have anything to worry about.

It's all good. Tell your GF she can come if she wishes. Mine wants to come (I cannot fathom why) but she has had a cruise planned with her mother and aunts for that week for a year now and I'd rather her go on the cruise than hang out with this bunch of yahoos. Besides, with the way some of these jokers talk to each other, she'd be issuing beatdowns left and right for people being rude.

Chris, she might have a point there...the whole "meet people in internet and then get raped" thing is real.

But not here (At least I hope not here......).

Have her look at the pictures from previous fests. Just a bunch of friends having lots of fun.

Best thing I ever did about 5 years ago was meet up with a couple local guys here on the forum. Then we traveled to Bloomington IL for a Midwest Polk Fest (Chicago area), over night. Then I flew out to Baltimore to HQ in 2008 and shared a room with the same guys I met in 2005. Had I been "afraid" to meet them, I probably wouldn't still be on this forum. The guys I met, plus a few more meet regularly to shoot the ****, hang out and have fun and we have a little thing going called RAS (Rockford Audio Society).

Chicago PF was a great time

Met some great people here on the forum and locally.

Thanks guys. She's just very overly cautious when it comes to the internet and meeting people. I can understand the fear but with Polkfest I was trying to tell her it was a lot different than that.

Its not like I'm going into some back alley to get a good deal on something and wind up without a liver...

Because right now its looking like I can come and so I mentioned that to her and she then got upset. I might just have her talk to you Lou about it because I think that might make her feel better.

I think she worries more because I have never been to that area of the country before, however seeing I wouldn't be really going anywhere there isn't really a fear I'm going to get lost and end up dead because it would only be from the hotel room to Lou's place so no real fear of me getting lost. Besides I've driven in serveral large cities by myself and never got "raped" so yeah....

Just show her a picture from one of the previous Polkfests of Louie and tell he is now hosting this one. No one is going to do anything out-of-line with a guy and can toss a VW Beatle across the street.

Again, it IS Totowa. But, at the same time there will be plenty of Jersey folks there. The thing about Jersey people is that they don't take BS from anybody so no worries about getting mugged and if you ask them how to get somewhere, they know 9 different ways from Sunday on how to get there. On top of that, they know which way is the fastest, the shortest, has the least traffic or has the least cops. Oh, and they will argue with each other about which is the way to go. If you tell them you are lost, if they can't figure out where you are they ask for landmarks, say "Oh yeah! I know where yous is at! Sit tight, I'll be right there!" Then they come find you and tell you to follow them. They take the most bass-ackwards "short cut" way to where you are going and then say "See, wasn't that easy?"

Totowa is a nice town, don't scare the kid :p

for North Jersey, it's a small town, though some from the more quiet areas of the country will think they are in a sprawling metropolis. John is spot on in that this is North Jersey. comparatively speaking, it's a bit dense up here in terms population.

you know how in other places in the country, you say hi to people at random? this is not a "Jersey" thing, lets just say that..lol

If you come to PF you will meet some of the best people ever. I have made great friends from being a member of the forum and there is a reason why the people refer to this place like family.

I have been friends with Lou for almost 20 years. You have nothing to worry about!

George is right. We at least waited until after the goat was dead until we let Mark have his fun. So you see, the goat was able to keep it's virginity and there wasn't any rape involved at all...

Seriously, I haven't met everyone above...but I have seen a few of these guys in person and like JSTAS says their 'bark' is worse than their bite. And, frankly, it's all in fun (most of the time) except for lightman1 (heck he's OK too--keeps his business in the bushes away from eveyone!).

Really, your girlfriend has NOTHING to fear. In fact, she's being a bit silly if I do say so myself. This is a site where the 'major' players have known each other for years if not a decade or two.

As the date approaches it's looking like a LOCK for me.

Totowa...I even know where that is. Lived in Jersey for a year about a decade ago. Yup I'm a Jersey refugee! Hope they let me back in?

Fella's she is simply thinking about it from a WOMAN'S perspective. As much as I love you guys, I would NOT attend one of these gatherings by myself.

It's not really about any of you per se, it is simply what most women take into account when traveling. I will only go to a PF if it is at HQ & I can attend with my brother.

I know that the vast majority of you are harmless, but for any woman just scanning this board & viewing this thread would say "NO WAY IN HELL WOULD I GO TO THIS!"

I'm one of those rare women who are into audio, but I have no illusions that this club is populatated by men & being in the company of a bunch of bascally men whom I don't know & who acting like typical men would NOT be a comfortable situation for me or almost any woman.

Those of you who are married, ask your wives if they would attend this event ALONE even if they were into audio. I'll bet you 10 to 1 they would say NO. Or think of if you would want your daughters attending the event.

Again, it's not about any of you, it's about women not putting themselves into possibly dangerous situations. It's something most men don't have to think about.

And I can tell you that my brother wouldn't want me to attend by myself either, he would want me to team up with a couple of other people that we both know & trust before he would be semi-comfortable with it.

Cathy, if you're not aware of it, and Mark isn't aware of it, you have AT LEAST twenty brothers at every Polkfest. You would be in more danger going to and fro than once you actually got in attendance. God help the individual who said or did the slightest unseemly thing in your direction.

I know quite a few women that are like Cathy and are very cautious and prefer not to travel alone...and that is understandable.

On the flip side, the women in my life think nothing about heading out on their own at the drop of a hat. My youngest daughter showed up last weekend black and blue from having gone whitewater kayaking on the Ocoee River with 5 guys (none of which were her BF). They were just guys she knew from school and work. They took care of her when she got hung up in a tree in a bad situation...maybe even saved her. She goes rock climbing and to music festivals all over the country as well as doing some solo hiking around the Smokies. As I have posted, my oldest thinks nothing of grabbing her backpack and heading to the far side of the world by herself...as she is doing right now in Cambodia. My wife while not as adventuresome as our daughters has flown across the country by herself on several occasions for various activities. Do I worry that "something" could happen? Sure...but people get killed or hurt everyday in their own backyard...often by people they "know and trust". I know they will use their best judgment and be wary and smart...and if something happens...it happens. They are independent, smart, confident women who would have it no other way.

Other than the fact they might think they would be bored to tears attending a PF with a bunch of audio geeks, they would have no qualms attending on their own just based on the things I've said about the past PFs and the people there. I doubt there would be many places in Jersey where Cathy would be safer than PF at Lou's. It's one thing to be cautious and wary...but PF at the home of folks gracious enough to open it up to "internet friends" doesn't fall into that category IMO.
