...some of that mono stuff seems to be alright. I might have to buy a couple different albums, one of each mono and stereo to be sure...:)

Just listening to Abbey Road now and what strikes me is Ringo's drumming. Might not be world class drummer but at least on this one it is "just what the doctor ordered"...nice subtle flair with a whole array of different tones come across. A true craftsman. This just goes to reinforce my conviction that down to the very end the Beatles were always so much greater than the sum of their individual parts.

OK, now as I'm typing I'm listening to Maxwell's Silver Hammer and really hearing this kind of funky keyboard that I've not heard before...the discoveries keep piling up.

Oh, and I don't believe anybody has mentioned the packaging. Simply stunning. A great set of photographs, for example, from Spring and Summer 1969 are included in the Abbey Road booklet in high qulaity gloss paper. I haven't seen anything like this type of packaging quality before.

The mono packaging is excellent as well... the CDs are placed inside vinyl sleeves (like the old sleeves audiophile LPs used to come in). The CD jackets themselves are replicas of the old LP jackets and the CDs themselves are printed with replicas of the center labels of the LPs... pretty cool...

Though I ordered the Mono set from Amazon yesterday $229 shipped, they of course are currently out of stock ("will ship in 3-6 weeks"). Well, I have discovered that CD Pacific has the mono box set in stock and available at $216 and change (plus $5 shipping). So I just canceled my Amazon order and placed an order through CD Pacific.

I just thought I'd pass this along to anyone interested in picking this up sooner rather than later at a fairly good price (though they are listing the item as "low stock")

I just listened to Abbey Road. It sounds...good, or should I say cool. I think they did a great job "enhancing" the recordings, but this is definitely not the original sound:

    -recording sounds way too hot.
    -overemphasized bass.
-sounds way too digital, if that makes any sense.
-I think I heard some distorted vocals.

So yes, it does sound good, but I think I would get tired of listening to this.

Boy, I'd have to disagree with Ricardo on Abbey Road. i think it has a new depth to it now. The bottom end (bass and drums) are finally an equal part of the music. I always detected a bit of distortion on the vocals, particularly on Come Together, even on my original vinyl. Seperation of vocals (see "Because") is stellar. This has always been my favorite of the Beatles canon and the remaster only adds to this feeling.

Has anyone had a chance to compare any of the remasters to the tracks on Love?

I just did an A/B of the Love version of "Drive My Car" with that on the newly remastered (Stereo version) of Rubber Soul.

Though of course the Love version was remixed (and thus has additives that make a direct comparison a little tricky), I've concluded that the sound on the new remaster of Rubber Soul is clearly superior to that on Love. One thing my ears picked out with greater clarity immediately, for example, was the cowbell (?...at least it sounds like a cowbell). It really jumps out at you in fullness with new remastered version.

But Love is still such a great compilation for what it is...in fact I've gotten so used to some of the mixes that I kind of expected, for example, "Drive My Car" to transition into "What You're Doing"

YES!!!!! Just got home from work and there was the Amazon box:D

Abbey Road ripping to hard drive now so I can start pumping through the Squeezebox, should be done in a few minutes. Pepper is up next. Should be a fun night. Wish I could stay up all night doing a Beatles fest, but I'm going to my personal trainer at 8:30 am

Here we go, tubes are warming up downstairs and should be just about ready to go!!!

Having the MFSL's, I have to say it's been a while since I listened to the originals. I barely remembered how bad they sound. One of the nice things about listening to this through the Squeezebox is it's really easy to do a/b's. I'm listening to Sgt. Pepper, and just to do a quick compare, I inserted the original Lucy into the playlist right after the remastered version. Oh man, this is crap compared to the new. I need to do more of this type of comparing after I get through just sitting back and enjoying these. That should be good fun. I've got a huge Beatles collection - for Abbey Road I've got the original, the Ebbett's needle drops, two different bootlegs of the MFSL vinyl, the Black Triangle needle drop, and now the remaster. That'll keep me busy for a while...

Ummm...what you are hearing is dynamic sound hitting the way it should. These are remastered, not remixed. There was no enhancing of the recordings, rather you're getting to hear what was always there.

Well, you're right. The remasters are simply more organic. I've been going back and forth between a Japanese copy of Revolver and the new one. The new one has a fuller sound, greater detail, more depth and a blacker background. The original is flat and lifeless in comparision. For example, on "Taxman" there is a cowbell in the right channel. On the new one, you have no doubt that it's a cowbell while on the original it's so dull that you barely notice it. On the original the bass at the beginning sounds more like a dull thud while on the remaster it sounds solid and alive. I'd say it's approaching what one hears from SACD and that's a good thing.

Glad I could help you spend your money!

By the way, here is a link to a pretty cool dual interview with George Martin and son Giles. Of course they collaborated on the Love project and it seems Giles played a seminal role in the production of the Beatles Rock Band game (I'm NOT a gamer!)

Anyway, its a brief but pretty good piece that touches on stuff like the Abbey Road studios.

I read where the engineers were careful with any limiting, there was a slight bit used, but very judiciously and only when it was found to help clarify a passage, there were no unilateral decisions made by an one engineer at Abby Road, great care was taken to protect dynamic's, there would be several listening sessions with breaks in between, in no way did the engineers make the recordings hot or loud.

This is not a re-mix, it is a remaster, in a remaster nothing is added to the orginal mix, no extra bass, treble, etc.. the goal was more space and clarity of course the weakness/strength of any given system for playback will be unique.

Couldn't find anything either in Ottawa or Gatineau. Guy at BB in Gatineau said it took only 1/2 hour to sell their stock. He said there was only 13K copies for Canada, hope this is baloney, I know Canada is small country population wise but not that small. Apparently COSTCO in Gatineau had a few sets for 189$, didn't last too long and apparently is now back order

So I ordered the Mono Set on the 30th of August and knew it would be a while before I actually had it in my hands, but the shipping process seems painfully slow. I bought the set off of the Beatles web site and it says it was shipped in the 17th of this month. It is going through FedEx Smartpost. The delivery date says October 8th! What the hell are they shipping it up here on, a mule? I paid $23.95 for shipping and this seems over the top pricey for such slow delivery. Am I being unreasonable here?

Yeah - seems like you aren't getting the value for the price - but - not sure what "Smartpost" is....

I enjoyed several business trips to Anchorage - nice city!

Ah yes, the Ice Roads...that must be it!

Actually, if I lived in some bush community up here I might understand the long transit time, but jeez, I live in the biggest city in the state! I think Smartpost is just 4th class shipping under another name, which I'd be fine with, if I wasnt charged almost $24 for it!

Yep, Anchorage is a pretty cool place. You can have city life and wilderness all in the same general area!
