Yes. I always wondered how U2 managed to mess up that song.
I don't think there is a song that U2 doesn't mess up. -

Sorry Curt,
But there is zero appreciable difference in the sound quality. The records are that good! I am a musician myself, so have a critical ear and my gear is not budget at all. Infact my turntable has recently been reissued by its maker and its $3,500!! I was floored when I read that!!

Spent this past Saturday with a friend listening to both the mono and stereo box sets. We put both albums in his dual cd player. We would listen to the mono version first, then switch to the stereo version for each song through each album. 12 hours later and we only managed to get through side one of the White Album after starting at Please Please Me. I didnt take notes, but I can tell you that the stereo remasters usually sounded better in quality to me than the mono versions all things being equal. However, this wasnt always the case, particularly for songs that were released as singles. Many times the mono sounded better. It is a toss up for me, but it sure was a lot of fun doing it. I hope to get through the rest of the catalog at a later date. We also had the Complete Recording Session book as we listened as well and I can say one thing about the Beatles: the lived in the studio! Amazing they lasted as long as they did. They would often make 12 or more takes for songs that I always thought of as throw-away tunes. Amazing attention to detail.
If you're a real Beatles fanatic, check out the following link. Supposedly, this box set is every single song and every single take and remix they ever did in the studio. I didnt see a price for this but its got to be pricey. The ultimate for a Beatles nut!!

I'm also a musician with a critical ear...and I hear a HUGE difference between them.
You can say that you don't like them, or you think they ruined them...but to say that you can't even hear a difference between them? That doesn't make sense to me.
They're mastered differently! How could they not sound different?

Wasn't the intent to make the remastered CDs as good as the original recordings? You are comparing with the vinyls and are saying there isn't any difference, shouldn't this say that they accomplished their goals of having the original vinyl sound on CDs which was crap the first time around. Actually, the new CDs should be compared with the crappy CD version that was made back then. This should be the final proof if the goal was actually accomplished or not.
Cheers!
TK
I don't think that was really the point. They used the original recordings to make the remasters...if they were trying to simply make them sound as good as the originals, there wouldn't have been much of a remastering process...they would have simply reprinted the originals.
The point was to go through and clean up some tape hiss, get rid of some background noise, bring levels up or down here and there, and overall just make them sound BETTER.The nirvana inducer-

got to hear the mono Beatles remastered CD's.. and i really enjoy the more centered music now. not so drastic left and right panned instruments. compared several of the songs in mono to the same song on the stereo remaster.. and there are a few songs where the stereo version allows some more instruments to be brought forward more than in the same mono version. Case in point.. While My Guitar Gently Weeps.... the high hat cymbals are more apparent in the stereo version of the mono version. NOt to say it's better or anything.. but that is just one example where the stereo version to my ears is slightly more pleasing.. I like hearing cymbals and such in music. It's there in the mono version to of course.. just slightly buried or laid back.
I want the complete mono box set now.. and just hand pick a few of the stereo remasters.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Sorry guys - its not a matter of format preference. On my system the records sound the same as the new CDs - no real difference at all.
The same can't be said with other vinyl CD comparisions. Sometimes the CD is better, sometimes the record. But in this case, they are line ball.
I do agree the new CDs are heaps better than the old ones - they were rubbish.
Oh for the person asking about the source components....
Turntable is a Thorens TD160 Super with Rega RB300 arm and Denon DL304 cartridge. This is feeding an Electrocompaniet ECP1 phono stage.
CD Player is a Denon S-10.
Amp is a KT88 based valve job.

Al, this is what I did. Though I've kind of moved from what was to be a handful to a majority of stereo remasters. I was able to get several of the stereos early on for 9.99 (or 12.99 for double disk) each so I still think it was cheaper for me than to have bought two sets. Anyway in addition to the mono box set, here's what I have purchased in stereo. Abbey Road and Let it Be were required, of course, because they're not included in the mono set to begin with:
Hard Day's Night
Rubber Soul
Revolver
Sgt. Peppers
Magical Mystery Tour
The Beatles (The White Album)
Abbey Road
Let It Be
Past Masters
I plan to add one more in stereo, and then I'll be done: Beatles for Sale. Thus the only ones I'm not going for in stereo are Please Please Me, With the Beatles, Help!, and Yellow Submarine in which cases I've heard that the extreme panning is in effect. Well, with regard to Yellow Submarine I'm not going to get it because my favorite track on it, "Hey Bulldog", is included in the Past Masters double-disk in the mono set (i.e. Mono Masters), and I don't care for too much else on that album.
Having had these for several weeks now, I'm not thinking in terms of which is better or worse but just that each bring out different qualities. In short, this is the first and only true Beatle remaster project in 22 years so its worth splurging a bit if you like what you hear.2 Ch.

I love waking up old threads.
I just celebrated the recent arrival of my new Benchmark DAC1 by laying my hands on the 24-bit version of the Beatles remasters. If you remember, in addition to the mono and stereo box sets, they also released this:
http://www.amazon.com/Beatles-USB/dp/B002VH7P4O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1299294980&sr=8-1
This thing has the entire stereo set, except in 24-bit FLAC. If you all though the stereo box set sounds good, you ain't heard nothing yet. 24-bit is where it's at....Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance. -

I am interested in your thoughts on the sound quality of the USB set. Is it worth the $250 for the usb set? I am installing a usb jack into my DAC and will be downloading the newly remastered McCartney album in 24/96 and was thinking about getting the Beatles USB 24/44.1 USB. Is it worth the money? Please explain what is better and how much better it is. thanks.
Greg

"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion."
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

It's quite good, bit I really struggle and strain to find differences between the USB version vs. the stereo box set. I'm not going to advise people to spend $250 on it if you already have the stereo cd's.Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

I realize I just contradicted myself in the above post. I am not saying the 24-bit versions don't sound better. But I'm also not recommending that people who already own the stereo cd's to spend $250 on the 24-bit. That's mainly because I don't want people coming to me afterwards and saying "I thought you said these were worth it." $250 is a lot of money, and people need to judge with their own ears if the difference is worth it to them. How do you know if they're worth it without buying them first? Therein lies one of the great problems with the audio hobby...Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

May this thread never die!
Got back into vinyl recently after a 24 year hiatus. Nabbed a 1967 original 1st pressing UK Mono Sgt. Pepper on eBay. It's actually in far worse shape than the seller described, so I am returning it. However, I did get enough of a listen to be able to say wholeheartedly that it blows the mono remaster cd out of the water. Comparing the two, the cd version was sterile and subdued, while the vinyl was alive and kicking. The vinyl was much warmer, had much better bass, and was just much more in your face than the cd version. I will be searching for a better copy of the vinyl, because I'm now 100% sold on the fact that the only way to listen to this album is on vinyl. I haven't gotten my ears on any of the other UK mono vinyl yet, but I suspect the same is true for the rest of the albums. After Sgt. Pepper, it's time to start saving my money for the White Album. Won't come cheap, but I suspect it will be worth every penny.
