Yep!! When I went to look at the ones I got, That was the first thing that went through my head was that the plates had to go.

Working with metal it's the first thing your eyes go to.

Wait till I do my custom grill covers.( no there will not be metal on them ).

Glad to see you guys getting them.

    I do take tips..:D

The replacement crossover plates for my SRS's and 1.2TL's arrived today. They were well packed in multiple layers of foam and plastic wrap. The turnaround time of a little less than three weeks (from payment to receipt of goods) was outstanding for a custom metalworking project that required anodizing in addition to silk screening.

    SRSPlatesDynamat-s.jpg
Figure 1. The custom plates, like their stock counterparts (bottom row), ring when thumped. I took this opportunity to treat the SRS
    1.2TL plates with Dynamat.

    Cust-plt-Dynamat-s.jpg
Figure 2. No more ringing. I should have treated the stock plates back when I treated the driver and passive radiator baskets.

I used a drafting compass to draw a 4-1/2" circle in the center of the rear of the SRS 1.2TL plates to avoid the Dynamat infringing on the coil's area.

    12TL-nogrille-s.jpg
Figure 3. The brass handles and contrasting darker plate color are an elegant, fitting aesthetic
    enhancement for Polk's flagship speaker.

    SRS12PltInst-s.jpg
Figure 4. SRS 1.2TL custom crossover plate close up.

I did not disconnect the crossover board's wiring harnesses and completely remove the crossover. I just removed the perimeter bolts and the crossover coil bolt and wedged the coil/crossover board in the baffle board opening as I attached the new plate to the large coil.

    ht-nogrilles-s.jpg
Figure 5. The SRS's in my home theater system also received crossover plate replacements.

    SRSPltOff-s.jpg
Figure 6. I did not treat the SRS crossover plates with Dynamat. The crossover board components cover so much of the plate's area
that I didn't think the small amount of Dynamat I could add would be worth the effort.

The SRS's crossover has three large coils bolted to the plate. The crossover assembly cannot be removed from the speaker without desoldering the connections. Once the perimeter bolts were removed, the coils were carefully wedged into the baffle board opening and the coil bolts were removed.

Before I did anything, I prayed that the 21 year old hot glue blob holding the center coil's bolt retaining nut wouldn't come loose. It didn't. I had that happen to a pair of CRS+'s once. Not fun.

    SRSCustPltOn-s.jpg
Figure 7. If you are reasonably dexterous, you should be able to manage the removal and reattachment of the SRS's multiple coils with
two hands. If you are not reasonably dexterous, get help.

    Thanks for everything Larry.

    Further Study

I have been evaluating some exotic wood options for replacing the (loathsome) oak on both the SRS and SRS 1.2TL. I think I want to go with a gloss black finish instead. I'm not in a big hurry since only a tiny bit of oak is visible when viewing the speakers head on. Did I mention that I don't like oak?

mad.gifI think you should take those oak panels to an auto body shop and have them refinished in a nice, glossy Ferrari red. It would compliment both your decor and your personality.

Did you miss the part where I opted for gold rather than red silk screening?~DK

I'm thinking of doing the same thing but leaving the oak sides or going with something exotic...

I'm concerned that I would get tired of an exotic wood grain after a while. The speakers call attention to themselves enough due to their size.

Thanks for the offer. I am already familiar with your excellent paint work. I'd jump at the chance to have you do my panels if you were close by. I am very hesitant to ship these and to have them shipped back to me after refinishing due to the risk of damage.

What a great thing this was. I am extremely envious of these and would have snagged a pair but I couldn't see attaching them to a set of 2.3tl's without ruining the aesthetics of them!!!
Beautiful work and what an outstanding offer by Tool.
