A couple of questions, if you don't mind. Please be gentle- I don't live or die by gadgets, but I have to replace my phone anyway, and am trying to get the most bang for my buck

What do y'all mean by a 'Mac tax'?

Are the use of the app's subject to additional charges?

If I buy a 'refreshed' 3G for $80.00, w/ 2 year contract, can I get the updates to include Tom-Tom?

    Thanks for any tutorials

The "mac tax" is just a cute way of people pointing out that Apple products tend to cost more than their competitors equally spec'd products. There is no actual "tax" or extra charge per se.

Most iPhone apps do cost money, however.

And yes, any iPhone 3G will be able to buy a GPS app like the TomTom one.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Any word on a Flash plugin for the iPhone yet?

As for the new omnia, yeah I've been down the road twice with Samsung now, most recently with the newer Blackjack - I think I'll pass.

I've been avoiding jailbreaking mine, mainly because it's not mine, but my wife's. Typically that's the first thing I would do, but we bought it for her because she's not a technical person and it's very user-friendly and never acts up on her, and I don't want to risk that.

If I were to buy one for myself someday (which isn't likely although I do think it's an awesome device), the first thing I'd do is jailbreak it.

I had to flash a leaked ROM to my Omnia to unlock the GPS. It will soon be an official release, but the release date has come and gone. After unlocking the GPS, I was able to install TomTom and have it access the GPS. Your Blackberry will be different because it runs a completely different OS

    Nadams,

I downloaded the Google maps and although quite slow works a heck of alot better than the VZ Navigator. The GPS was already activated it was just that VZ Nav could never find me. But it is all good. Hey guys good luck with the iPhone I am so envious. As soon as the exclusive contract is over and Apple brings it to Verizon I will be so done with the Storm. AT&T's phone service is so horrible in my area I just can't use their service and afterall the iPhone IS a phone.

It's slow because every time the screen shifts, it has to download the new map data from the internet. Programs like TomTom keep all the maps on your storage card, so there's no delay when the screen shifts.

I was playing with one of the 3G phones today. Me Likey.
Even though I'll never use 90% of the app.'s, because they're an additional $30/ month.

Seeing that I'm with Sprint, I'll stick with my Palm Treo 755P. I didn't even have to upgrade to the Data plan like I would have had to with the Instinct or BB. I do wish they wouldn't have run out of the Palm Treo 800W, though. It was windows based. I'm still getting used to the Palm OS.

I have my 3GS all synced up and activated and it is simply superb. It is significantly faster than my 3G in loading absolutely everything, the magnometer is great for navigation and the camera is definitely improved.

Got mine yesterday, activating it in less than 5 minutes with AT&T. It was a fully automated process (no human was involved). Pretty impressed with the process, better than my past experience with other AT&T phones. I moved up from AT&T Tilt, which is pretty decent other than its bulkiness with the extended battery.

On a side note, I applied Invisible Shield back cover, it was a **** to put it in, not perfect (has some bubles that I hope would go away in a few hours), but it provides the "stickiness" that add grip when I hold it. I am not planing to do the front face since it supposed to be pretty scratch resistance.

So far pretty impressed with the user-friendliness and quality of voice and call (including speakerphone quality), bluetooth. No drop call yet, but I am expecting equal to or better than my AT&T Tilt. It is more of ATT Network functions rather than iPhone quality.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

IMO the iPhone's main issue is that you are stuck using at&t wireless (which sucks). Therefore everything else about the phone really doesn't matter.

Jan 2010 I think before Verizon comes even close to getting it. It will be a spectacular day though, I'll bet Apple sells 2+ million of them.

People love to complain about AT&T, and 99% of it is just because they heard everyone else complain about it. I had them long before I had an iPhone, have traveled all around the country and have almost NEVER had a problem, or a "dropped call", or an outage, or anything.

Yeah, they're a big company and it's f un to hate them and t hey make some poor decisions as far as customer service goes but as far as their network I just don't see what all the complaints are about.

    Wrong.

I use mine on TMobile. Unlimited Text and Data for 19.99. Granted its not 3g speed, but EDGE is about 128 down and about 56 up on avrg for my speed test. But Hey WIFI is everywhere so i hardly ever have to use it.

I had them through work and LOVED them until Cingular bought them out. Then they went downhill IMO. Thats when i switched to TMobile and havent had much of an issue. Now they are ATT again and havent heard much of an issue for most users other than the slowness with getting up to par with MMS, etc with the iPhone. But if i dont have to sign a contract with them to use an iPhone ill stick with what i got.......

The MMS thing is lame, but it is mostly Apple's fault. Jobs et al decided MMS was a "dead technology", and didn't put it on the iPhone because they felt mobile email was enough. It was an arrogant and stupid decision.

Actually, here they simply suck balls compared to Verizon. Before buying a phone for this area I talked to friends, real estate agents (who go EVERYWHERE), and random people.

Pretty much all of them said the same thing. Verizon has the best coverage.

I used to have AT&T where I lived before (what was it before being AT&T ... Cellular One?) because there the coverage was superior to anything else. Got my first digital cell from them in 1996.

But that's just one region of the entire country, not exactly a reason to judge an entire network.

A friend of mine just moved to a town where the only cell phones that work are T-Mobile and Sprint, two of the worst networks as far as coverage goes.

I've had Cingular / ATT for almost ten years now, and in that time not a single problem, ever. Coverage in the North Texas area is superb, everywhere I've been.

The only other real option here is Verizon since Sprint sucks here, and I won't deal with Verizon again.

See Verizon has the best network here although I really hate the local stores. So I am stuck with them unless At&t really improves their network here. There are so many dead spots it is not funny.

It's funny you say that, because our in-laws have ATT in Grand Prairie and it sucks and we have friends up in Allen, who are having issues as well. On the other hand, we have had Verizon now for 5 years and haven't had any issues.

Funny how that works I guess, we've been through an upgrade every two years on 3 lines, probably 10 phones in all now, not including all the Cingular phones I've had for work, and other than the Samsung phones have never had a bad phone or bad service.
