About 5 hours ago (Thursday evening, less than a week after the 3GS launch), we were able to verify that the 24Kpwn exploit that the hybrid team used on the iPod Touch 2G is still applicable to the bootrom of the iPhone 3GS. That means we can use the same sort of technique used by our current redsn0w tool to jailbreak and unlock the iPhone 3GS.

This is great news, but how did it happen? Why didn’t Apple fix this in their normal cat&mouse fashion? Well it seems this bootrom was cut in about the August 2008 timeframe, so the unintended early reveal of 24Kpwn earlier this year didn’t affect the iPhone 3GS.

For our technical notes on where the 24Kpwn exploit is in the 3GS, see here (pastebin hash of it is here). Our original blog post for when this exploit was first found is here.

And yes, ultrasn0w will be able to be used on the iPhone 3GS for you unlockers! (In fact, without any modifications whatsoever!)

Important: Apple has not given up on the cat&mouse game, and in fact there are challenging aspects of the 3GS jailbreak that aren’t in the other devices. It’ll take some time to safely work these into our tools, but the fundamental weaknesses are there: The bootrom is exploitable via 24Kpwn, and the baseband is exploitable via ultrasn0w. (And just like with the 3G, ultrasn0w for 3GS requires that you not update your baseband when Apple comes out with new firmware.)

405 bucks? Seriously? Why would someone pay that much for the old one?
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

They don't want a contract or they are using the phone with another carrier.

As soon as the guy who bought my phone got it, He went to chinatown and got it unlocked and he's using it with tmobile. The Unlock service cost him another $45

People are all over CL for 10-20 bucks for unlock/jailbreak. But if you are halfway smart and know how to use a computer you can do it yourself for free.

I was a hardcore Black Berry user, I've used them for at least 10 years. There are a couple of things I miss:

    1) I need a little red light, when something happens on the blackberry this little red light flashes. If you miss an event on the iphone and the screen turns blank then you will not know that there emails waiting for you to answer. With the blackberry I would just glance over to it for a few seconds and if the red light was flashing then I knew I needed to pick it up.

I carry the new Blackberry 9000 and I agree that little red light is addicting, I'm always looking at the blinking light. Green means nothing is going on, but red is a sure winner there is something "going down". Love the BB 9000. Im in the USA right now and mine is picking up signal with no prob. I went from Japan ----> Korea
    >USA and my BB picked up service in each country no probs.

    2) The Search function does not search the content of the contacts.

    3) a Flash for the camera would be great.

    4) a removable battery, the battery dies at least twice as fast as the blackberry, Since i can't pop out the battery and put in a fully charged one i must carry my power adaptor and iphone cable with me everyday.

    5) it would be nice if the sent and inbox email would be in the same folder, on the blackberry it is very easy to see if you responded and you can read your response over after you sent it without changing any folders

I agree with most of these complaints, being an iPhone user, but for number 4 there are a number of products taht essentially act as a second battery. I can't find a link right now but there are even a few that sort of act as a case for the iPhone and don't take up much room at all. May be helpful for you during trips and whatnot.

I was gonna create a new thread, but I'll post it here instead. For those interested in jailbreaking your phone, there is now a jailbreak out for the new 3.1.2 OS, called blackra1n. A link with info is below, but I'll note here that if your phone is unlocked, or you want to unlock, this is NOT the way to go. But, if you're like me and just want to jailbreak, this works great.

I won't get into trying to convince anyone to jailbreak because some people just don't like the idea. However, I will point out that this new app takes all the 'techy nerd stuff' out of it, you basically just plug it in and click a button - it just works, kinda like the phone itself.

As for why I jailbreak my phone, there are 2 functional and 1 cosmetic reasons. I like the ability to change the look and feel of the phone using Winterboard, but honestly that's just cosmetic and I could live without it.

I also use a program called iBlackList that is a call screening app, and it's very handy, but I suppose I could live without that one as well if I had to.

MyWi, however, I could not live without. This lets me take my phone and create a wifi network on the spot using it's 3G internet connection - it essentially allows me to tether other devices such as a laptop to the phone, a service which AT&T has yet to implement, if they ever do. This basically saves me $60 a month, allowing me to drop the data card line I was using for my laptop, as the phone uses the same 3G technology and it works just as good, plus there's no software to install on the PC so I'm not tied down to a single PC. I can't stress how much I love this feature, and $720 savings a year is nothing to sneeze at.

There are lots of other apps and features that jailbreaking unlocks as well, but the 3 above are my most used. Here is a rundown of what else I have installed:

SBSettings (allows more control over your phone, I use mainly to hide icons)
IntelliScreen (displays information like weather and email on unlock screen)
Backgrounder (lets you run apps in the background)
GVMobile (Google Voice support on the iphone)
AnyRing (removes the ridiculous restrictions on ringtones, letting you use anything)
MxTube (lets you save YouTube videos to your phone)

Jailbreaking Info and Instructions. It looks like there are versions for both Windows and Mac
