A simple measurement of the temperature of the rock isn't sufficient if one is contemplating walking on the rock.

    " 800 degrees ! No way ! ".

    Yes way.

You need to measure the density, porosity, and determine the rate at which those rocks can transfer heat to determine if it is safe to walk on a "Hot" rock.

As Bikezappa correctly pointed out, the ability of those porous rocks to transfer heat is very, very low.
The rocks themselves are really "hot", but they contain little heat and what heat they have is transferred to the bare foot verrrrrrry slowly.

The same is true of cables; ohms may be the same as copper wire, inductance/capacitance differences may be negligible, but ..... they sound different.

Perhaps one provides a noticeable, if not measureable, damping factor. Or ..... ?

Who knows if there is a measurable factor that causes what is, seemingly, noticeable.
That may be something to look into. Instead of thinking, "Well, I can't measure a difference, therefore there can't be one !", perhaps you might come up with a means for determining what causes this difference.

Kind of the same principle behind how the space shuttle tiles work. The heat is not well transferred to the item in contact, but held within. Going back to the theme of blind tests posted earlier go fire up some good ole Kingsford charcoal, blindfold the fire walker and ask him or her to go for a stoll....

I very much believe in blind tests, particularly concerning those things that are not well measured, but people sense differently. While this is an audio forum and while many a war is waged here concerning things heard, scents are among the most difficult to measure senses we possess.

Emotional faith created by cable manufacturers? Where did you come up with that one?

    Anyway......

I don't need a blind test to tell me that what I hear is what I hear. For example, I've had a $2000+ power cable on loan from the manufacturer. This pc is 4 times the cost of my current reference pc and I had hope it would take my system to a higher level. However, I trust my ears and they told me that my current pc sounds better.

Blind tests are for amateurs and cowards.

Read my post above. You are hearing something that is not easy to measure.

The way that blind tests are conducted is incorrect is the point. You're trying to determine if the human is sensitive enough as a measuring instrument to detect the differences between two sets of music on different pieces of equipment. What Jess is saying which is backed up by psychological science is that humans are numb to the differences between two similar sounds and won't start to notice the differences until they hear one or the other for hours on end.

This is a proven system of the human mind designed to aid in hearing faint sounds and to stop people from going crazy from aural over stimulation.

They did a test once where they changed the whole BEAT of a song and played the two different beats with the same lyrics to people. The result was that on average humans could not tell the difference uppon the first hearing of a song with a different beat and the same lyrics. I know this because I'm a DJ that remixes songs and people tell me all the time that they've heard my music on the radio, that's what I found when I investigated.

You need to hear a song multiple times before you can detect a difference in beat, that's why we like new songs often but after listening to them more we think they're crap.

Humans are so incredibly ridiculously numb to sound that they actually hear faint sounds and then think it's their cell phone or some one calling their name. Something completely different from the actual sound ie a microwave.

Does this mean that all sound is the exact same and that the beat of music is all the same?

Does this mean we should replace our voiceboxes with microwaves because people can't tell the difference.

    Think about it.

The correct way is to do a blind test is over multiple weeks with music experts and see if you can conclusively prove that one piece of equipment is better than another. ie if the majority of experts say one thing is better then it is, if no conclusion is reached under those circumstances then and only then is it legitimate.

so true! my phone talks and says who i'm getting a message from and i constantly think i hear it saying "message from _____" then i check it and there's nothing there.

anyway...this thread is getting a little silly...i know people are making relevant points but the porosity of rocks has nothing to do with the quality of speaker cables  no one will win this argument or talk any sense into the people opposing their opinions...

I'm sure there's some site crossover. Some of the cable/equipment
debates over at head-fi are completely braindead. I guess using a
low bitrate I-pod as a source to gauge equipment performance yields
some very strange results. And there's a very vocal group of flat-earthers
over there. Amp design, cables, sources are all snakeoil to them. There's
really no limit to how far to take it. Whatever. I enjoy my upgrade path,
and if that's not what they want, to heck with it. Somebody really enjoys
    food from Micky D's ,too.

healthy anyhow? It's kinda like alcohol free beer. What's the point?

If this thread is so worthless, why does everyone continue to defile themselves by posting here. I agree this thread is a waste of forum bandwidth. Let this thread die as the Emporer has forseen.

Here's my addition to this lovely thread, having something to do about blind tests.

I, for one, strongly believe that I can hear a difference in speaker wires.

Also, I know I can hear a difference in electronics, to the point of differences in CD players.

I also do not subscribe to the notion that we have short-term audio memory. I believe that we can remember how things sound, even details like timbre and harshness, and accuracy. (You can think right now and hear your mother's voice in your head, right? Does it sound the same in your mind as one of your female co-workers?--That's remembering the way something sounds, right?)

So, blind tests? Sure there's a difference...if something sounds different, why wouldn't you be able to hear it???

    There's my two pennies.

This subject is so devisive, I am going to try out a "wireless" system. What could be more transparent than no wires at all?

Also, I thought the hot coal walking had to do with the layer of ash on top which acted as a insulator...

    Interesting
You STRONGLY BELIEVE you can hear a difference in speaker cable.
You KNOW THAT YOU CAN HEAR A DIFFERENCE IN CD PLAYERS
You have just answered yourself as Cd players involve source that is critical.
