Today I went out for 9 holes at a course I had never played before. I shot a 47 on the front nine. I had 4 bogeys, 1 double bogey, 2 triple bogeys, and 1 four over, and 1 birdie on a par 3.

My putting was lots better. I hit 17 putts and I only had one 3 putt all day. I had 2 one putts. On the par 3 that I birdied I sunk a semi-slippery 8 footer... that felt great.

I only hit 2 fairways, but overall my driver did not get me in too much trouble.

going back to the same place tomorrow afternoon to play 18.

Well, after much gnashing of fangs, I finally pulled the trigger on a set of Ping G5 irons. Should be here by next Monday, so Tuesday might have to be a "sick day"!

okay lets not let this thread die.

I shot my career personal best this evening.
    80

    Here is the breakdown.
    I had 8 pars, 6 bogeys, 3 doubles, and 1 triple.

I took had 4 really good saves from around 5-10 feet. This was accompanied by 5 GIRs.

Here is what I am really proud of though; I took 34 putts. Before the round I spent nearly 3 hours practicing my chipping and putting. I figured out a really good routine for putting that I am going to stick to. It was even working very well for lag putts. I had about 5 lag putts that ended up within five feet of the hole.

My game is really solid off of the tee and I am making really smart decisions of where and how to play my ball. This was my fifth time out in the past seven days... I won't be going out tomorrow unless something crazy happens and my girlfriend will go along with me for 9 holes. But I just hope that this whole day at the course was not a fluke.

    Something doesn't add up....Are you playing a par 65 course? Because you've just describe 15 over par. I've seen a quite a few par 70 and 71 courses....but never a par 65.

yeah you're right. it has a string of par 3s through a residential area that couldn't be anything more than par 3. nonetheless I'm still happy with the result. When posting I didn't even think of that though... thanks for the catch. Oh well even if it was a 70 or 71 I still would have broke 90 the way I was playing.

Just got done playing Starr Pass in Tucson. It has to rank up there with the best course that I have ever played. Just an insanely tough course. True desert golf at it's best. It was also played on the PGA tour as the Tucson Open. (Now we have the Accenture Match Play at Dove Mountain)

Any ways as I said true desert golf, target golf, driver will kill you on a lot of holes. I scored a 93 with 6 par's, and was thrilled to get off of that course under 100. What makes this place fantastic was the country club feel. I had people washing my clubs after the round, taking my bag to the car. A course marshal that actually knew what he was doing, but was so pleasant and knowledgeable about the course.

We played Starr Pass for a measly 38 dollars with the cart. This course easily goes for over 200 dollars a round in the winter. If you are ever in Tucson, this is the place to be.

I've just recently been able to get back to playing 3 times or so a week after a 7± month layoff due to a hand injury. Short game sucks and I'm stuck around 80. I'm hoping to get back to the mid 70s by August.

I haven't played that course in years. The front nine was decent but the back side was goofy golf. There's a course in Cobbly Nob called Bent Creek about 15 miles from Gatlinburg that is the same way. If they would take the two front nines and put them together it would be a nice course.

My last two rounds have been pretty good. I hit 12/14 fairways at a course I've never played before, which has to be a record for me. And, I got the first eagle of the year in our golf league. I had the only one last year and it looks like it may be that way again this year! It was funny how crappy I was shooting. I had 4 bogies, a double bogie, then I drop an eagle. Finished with a 41, which kind of sucks since I had an eagle. :D

Maz sweet job on your first eagle of the year. I my self have never scored an eagle. This year I have been close multiple times, but the putts just don't sink. Oh well, not a biggie. Best round for me this year is an 86, and the worst was last weeks 93. But Starr Pass has to be the most difficult course I have ever played. Which the 93 was unfortunate because I started off +1 after 4 holes.

I got out and playd over the weekend. Shot a 123 considering that it's only my 12th time playing I dont think its that bad. Only had 1 par but I played the hole perfectly which made up for the rest of the game. Hope to go out again this weekend.

Played last Saturday. It was going pretty well. I had a 39 thru 8, including consecutive pars, which is unheard of for me, until I got a migraine with an aura that made it impossible for me to see whatever I was looking at. Like the ball.

It's weird that I've had eagles in the last 2 years and never before in my life. My last two years in high school I averaged a 41 then a 39. Pretty good, considering half the courses we played on I wasn't very familiar with. Now, I average around a 42-43 and this is when I drop two eagles. Go figure.

So are there any actual new golfers here? All I am reading about are rounds in the 80's and 70's, which makes us new folks sick :)

I shot a 54 on the front 9 at the municipal course in Cville, Va. a couple of weeks ago. Not bad for me, but it certainly felt like a round that would have been in the 40's. I just can't seem to get any consistency going. One round my woods and long irons are good, and everything else is bad. The next round it seems like the only thing I'm able to do is chip/putt. What I wouldn't give for 1 round of consistency....

I just started playing in January when my VP gave me a set of clubs. I took a few lessons and then palyed a few times and the work/finances got in the way. Played again last week. I need to get out more often but I need to save up some dough first. It can get expensive.

That is the key to being a good golfer...consistency. My best friend and I during our high school years (10 years ago) knew it was all about being consistent and did a test. For every shot, we hit two balls, but we had to use the same club and take the same aim so only our "inconsistencies" would hurt us. Needless to say, we both shot under par that round. The same goes for a scramble, where you play with 1 to 3 other players on your team and take the best shot. Normally we'll shoot around a 62-64 when we play a scramble, with guys that are about my skill level where we'd normally shoot around 85 solo. The pros are pros because they're so consistent.

I started back last year after a 20 year hiatus. I used to get angry because I couldn't "master" it or even be decent as I could with most other sports when I was young. Now when I make a bad shot, I just laugh it off and think to myslef, "there's another opportunity to practice my wedge."
Took a few lessons and have been spending more time at the Black Bear driving range than golfing. We take the camcorder and shoot each other swinging and that has helped quite a bit. I belong to a 9 hole par 3 course that is a stones throw from the house. Not really manicured well, but it's cheap at $3 for a cart for 9 holes and $5 for 18, or free if I walk. It's good practice for the short game. Bought my ladyfriend a set of clubs and got her a few lessons too. She is enjoying it and we do laugh alot at each other between the margaritas. My best on a big course is 84, which I was happy with. My motto, shoot 6, holler 4!! and write down 5. Game on.

Well I've been away from polk for awhile. I play almost 4 times a week and shoot in the mid 80s now. It is nice. I picked up a 2007 Scotty Cameron Studio Stainless putter. I love this thing.

I'm taking the day to play this Friday with some guys from church. This will be first time I have been out in about a year. Should be lots of fun with some (unfortunately) high scores. It will be nice just to get out there and play.

BTW - any DFW guys play Woodbridge recently? That's where we are headed on Friday and wondered what the course conditions are.

FYI - Woodbridge is offering $9 green fees this Friday. You just have to go to their website and sign up to be on their email list or something. Overall cost should be right around $25 with cart.

It was a very long Golf weekend for me. First off Friday my dad and I went and I shot a 91. The coarse (Canoa Hills) looked to be in great shape, but torrential rains made the fairways very soggy, and the balls would just stick in the ground. They really should have left the course closed for it to dry up. I think we and everyone else were doing more damage than good. Also it was very humid that day, and ball flight was actually down about 10-15% from our usually dry heat conditions. Amazing how much humidity takes away ball flight distance.

Saturday I took my 12 year old to a golf etiquette class. He has joined the Southern Arizona Junior Golf Association. What a great non-for profit gig. 60 dollars gets him a shirt, hat, and a Tucson junior golf card that lets him golf at any of the city courses for 1 dollar. Every Sunday they meet at one of the cities driving range, and they are instructed by PGA pro's for 5 dollars. They have putting and chipping challenges, different faucets of the game to work on, and if the course is slow they will take them out to play a few holes. Not to mention they have a wharehouse full of donated clubs, and twice a month they open it up and custom fit clubs for the new kids...all for free I might add.

So after the etiquette class for my son, (and a butt chewing to the new parents on behavior, sad but necessary) they informed us that the new additions were eligible to play in a tournament the next day. The SAJGA have sponsered tournaments at least twice a month, for a very small fee. So my son played in his first tourny on Sunday, scored a 65 in 9 holes, got one dozen new Wilson balls, and free lunch for 15 dollars. Now how can you beat that? He is signed up for two more in August, including one tournament at La Paloma CC. Very exclusive resort that even I cannot afford to golf at.

So I am very excited that my son wants to do this, plus I now have a playing partner for life. I cannot express my amazement at this organization. What these people are doing for the kids is amazing.

Good job avelanchefan! Get them started young. I wish my dad had played golf, but he never picked up a club. I would have loved to spent time on the course with him but he had no interest in the game. :(

Back years ago I got my start around 10-11 years old. There was a municipal course close to our house and during the summers my mom would drop me off early in the morning and pick me up that evening several time during the week (they wouldn't let kids on the course during the weekend). I would play all day long. They also had an "interclub" program where there were youth teams and our little municipal had one. We would get to go play the teams at all of the Country Clubs in the area. I got to play clubs back then that might not even let me in now.;) By the time I was 13, I was a 2 handicap. It's amazing what a limber back and no fear will do for a golf game. I remember how thrilled I was when Acushnet came out with a "no cut" golf ball. It was a ROCK but it was nice for a kid with little money to not ruin a 50¢ golf ball with a bad hit that cut the cover. Most of the balls I played with came from scouring the woods surrounding the course and the no cut balls were like gold. (BTW Acushnet is now the parent company for Titleist, Cobra and Footjoy).

For some personal reasons I put the clubs down when I was 14 and didn't pick them up again until I was 26. I wish I could recreate that loose, fluid swing I had when I was 13...

My game is starting to come back around from my 8 month layoff because of my hand injury. :D

Good job avelanchefan! I played 18 Saturday just north of Orlando. Did ok on the front 9 but got overheated on the back 9 and the game suffered. It was in the mid 90's and very humid.
Played a neat short course south of Ocala Sunday and did well and had a ball with my ladyfriend even after a frog strangler storm come through on the second hole. She shot the best game of her life. Said she chocked it up to just being relaxed. Plan on playing again this weekend.
