I get to play the Whistling Straights Irish Course in two weeks. Looking forward to that. Hopefully tomorrow morning I make it out for a full 18. Last time I played 18 I shot a career best.

That's the course in Kohler WI.? That is tough a course. A few years ago they held the PGA championship there. I also believe they just had a tournament televised this last weekend from that course. I was out golfing so I missed watching the tournament (plus Wimbledon was on).

Did I already say that is one tough course!!!!

You do realize that all of the irons have changed their angles and are a club length different from clubs made 15-20 years ago. That's the whole reason the gap wedge came into existance as 3-P today is really the 2-9 from 15 years ago and the SW stayed the same.

That was the US Senior Open. Whistling Straits also hosted the 2004 PGA Championship. Not too bad for a 9 year old course...

I know what the lofts of each of my clubs are and have built my set around the distance of each club. I know that I hit my 33° 7-iron 150-155 yds vs the 165-170 yds I used to hit my 34° 7-iron only a few years ago. The thin club face created by perimeter weigting allows for more ball speed. I know I have lost clubhead speed (the key to distance) as I age...brought on by less flexibility and less strength.

You also don't want to compare the set you play with to a Pros. He may have his 9-iron bent to 35° which is similar to a 7 or 8 iron for us mere mortals (plus their swings often tend to de-loft the clubs).

Technolgy has helped distance and to some extent off center hits...but a bad swing will produce a bad shot no matter how good the club.

Figured you'd know that, but just making sure. A lot of folks I know are like "wow, this thing hits 10 yds further than my old club" and the face is 4 degrees stronger than their old club.

Anyone have a favorite golf bag company? I currently use a Sun Mountain bag, and I like it a lot. I need to get a new bag, either for me or my wife. I've got my eye on some of the Ogio bags. They look like they might be a little flashier/glamorous. Sun mountain bags are pure function and lightweight, not a bad thing to be either.

I pretty much go for whatever happens to be the lightest bag on the market that will stand up and have backpack straps and that tends to be Sun Mountain from what I've seen. But then I haven't purchased a bag in probably 5 years.

To me, I'd rather have it be functional and light than "look cool" and I end up hauling an extra 5 lbs of bag everywhere. I've also found that with a smaller/lighter bag, you'll tend to carry less "junk".

Sun Mountain Lightning. I'm 6'4" and walk 95% of the time I play. It was one of the few bags where the strap system fit me comfortably. I also like the roller top for handling the bag. It is almost 3 years old and showing very little wear. I average 2-3 walking rounds per week so it has been used at least 300+ rounds. My next bag will definitely be another SM...either another Lightning or maybe the Superlight 3.5 (if it only had the roller top).

Got a quick 30 minute lesson for like $50. Told the guy what I was doing (hitting short and high), he watched about 5 shots, then assessed the issue. I was majorly opening my clubface when bringing my club back causing me to just kind of glance under the ball, not drive through it. Rest of the swing looks good.

Hit the range one time since the lesson, then hit the links this weekend and shot in the high 80's (finally broke 90). Only mishit like 3 irons shots. All is good now, and I can't wait to play again. If I can finally combine good drives with my new iron shots and putt decently, I'll be a mid-80's guy by years end.

That is what I was doing for years. I had my clubface slightly open and I was hitting most shots to the right or with a fade. That's why I thought you may need just a small tweak. Excellent!!!:D

Yeah, well worth the $50. Much better than spending $50 to for a 4/5 hour round of frustrating as hell golf.

Hit some balls today. Feel better and better with my new swing as I gain more muscle memory.

I gained about 10-15 yards per stick, even more on my wedges. I've only played 6 times and I'll shoot 75 then next time out 84. Wish I could get out more.

I may be playing at Craig Ranch TPC on Saturday. It's been raining like crazy this spring/summer, but I have managed to get in three rounds over the past two weeks.

i can't walk that boring thing twice.

on the 8 over i blew up on one of the par 4's... took me four, yes 4, strokes to get out of a bunker. and not to mention the errant tee shot.

    oh what could have been.

Went to the midwest (Iowa) this past week and was able to get in 3 rounds with my friends crappy wilson clubs. I shot a 91,94,96. You guys would think that was pretty damn good when you saw the shape of these clubs.

Any ways I learned a few things that I forgot when playing Midwest golf compared to desert golf. First and foremost is distance, here in Tucson the air is a little lighter, and the ground much stiffer so you get that little extra yardage.

Now you would think that would equate to the greens...it did not. The Iowa greens where some of the nicest I had ever witnessed....green and very soft, BUT the ball would not stick to it, and the greens were lighting fast. They were just very very slick. And rarely would I ever make a divot. In Green Valley (this is were I mainly play) I make divots all the time, the ball sticks, and the greens are usually slow to medium in speed. Just a really odd thing.

Oh well I had a great time with my buddy and his horse pasture clubs.....now it's back to my Cleveland Launcher's , and my Nike Suhmo driver!
