Evolution

Are we allowed to talk about religion in here? I can't find the sticky thread saying no so whatever.

Some Jehova Witnesses came to my house today and after I let my giant golden retriever pretend he was going to eat them for breakfast I decided to talk to them because I usually just avoid them.

So they were telling me that there is now scientific evidence that evolution is not the reason for all of the different species and lifeforms on this earth and that one intelligent being had to do it. They compared someone building my house to someone creating everything.

Well, I have one very simple question, who created their creator? they apparently don't like the theory that over a few billion years a few molecules might happen to be in the right place at the right time and form something slightly living, which over another few billion years may become alittle more living, so where'd their creator come from?

I asked them questions and the only responses they had were "can i read you this passage from the bible?". I kindly declined to hear it, I did however read their little leaflet thing about scientists who think evolution is **** and Darwin is a crackpot. I think they use the King James version of the bible. Isn't he the king that changed around Englands religion because he wanted his marriage enulled and the pope wouldn't do it? If I'm wrong then I'm wrong, but if I'm right then that doesn't seem like a very good basis of your life's beliefs. Oh well, people can believe whatever they want, that's fine with me. I have no proof that anyone is wrong just an opinion.

We usually avoid those types of topics since it only leads to major arguments in here. Since you put it like this though, lets have some fun.

You should have called your dog Satan. "Down Satan! Down boy!!! Are you not full from the 10 souls you consumed yesterday???"

I may get a pair of assless chaps and answer the door in them when the Jehovah Nitwits come around next time.
    No excuses!

No need for an apology. Demons man, demons. Everybody is plagued by demons. Some real, some imagined, some worse than others. They can keep a person awake at night. That's all. Nothing more and nothing less.

You'd be amazed at the amount of scientific discoveries that have popped up in the last few years that validate Biblical principles and archeological discoveries that support history as recorded in the Bible, whereas these principles and claims were previously hotly contested by the 'scientific' community before.

It's a fact that evolution is a 'crutch' scientists and others are using to avoid accountability to a god, God.

If you're interested in it, look up the concept of irreducible complexity. That in and of itself disputes evolution sufficiently for me. And remember that Darwin himself only held onto evolution as a theory, not an explanation for the earth's origin. He admitted in his own writings that later discoveries may very well disprove his theory.

Anyhoo, I hope I didn't get too opinionated with my reponse. :)

Well maybe I should have said this before. In their little pamphlet thingy they used completely wrong biological evidence which they called scientific. They were saying mutations will not cause new species. Which is completely true, most mutants, aka a mule, are sterile to prevent their chromosomal anomolies from being passed on. However, any good scientist will tell you that. ****, i learned that in bio 101. However, the average joe you are trying to convert might not know.

I don't like being bullshitted into the blending of science and religion. Religion is not science. That's not meant to be demeaning to any religion, i'm not saying science is better just that the two are different. Apples aren't oranges...though genetically we could probably make an Opple. Does that make us creators? Does everything have a creator? Do all women complain so much? Who's great idea was it to create the talking kind? Must have been a mutation....there, proved them wrong.

So how in the world is that completely wrong biological evidence?! You just went on to say that it's true... And if you're questioning what mutations have to do with evolution, well mutations is the whole basis for evolution.

And I won't even get into the whole sacred/secular or fact/value distinction bologna. I don't want to get too deep into a subject barred from this forum. ;)

First off, its pretty hard to deny that evolution is a FACT! Look at a snake with its remnants of legs, or look at the lizards that live underground that still have eyes but are blind. Hell anybody in here over 30, remember back to your highschool. How many 16 year old dudes were in there that looked like Grizzly Adams! Now look at your typical 16 year old today. Theyre scrawny by comparison and virtually have no body hair.

Im real big on astronomy and in that field alone is all kinds of undeniable evidence of evolution. We theorize that planets evolve out of spinning discs of dust orbiting around a newly formed star, well we now have seen several of these new born solar systems doing just that thanks to the Hubble Space Telescope.

That being said, evolution being a fact doesnt mean there isnt a God. A God that just snaps his fingers and BAM everything is there doesnt make as much sense as a God that creates a process and lets it run its course.

Science is NOT the enemy of religion. Explaining and understanding how things work and are created is NOT an attempt to deny the existance of God.

Mutations are not evolution. Mutations are sterile to prevent them from breeding . Natural selection is the basis of evolution. I said they are using the fact that mutations dont cause new species to disprove evolution. Well **** duh, evolution isnt about mutations. If that were true, there would be some scary **** running around on this planet.

    I agree with Mac 100%

I'll not step into the religious standpoint for the forum's sake, although ab and I have similar backgrounds.

With a science background, I can agree that changes can occur within species. This is evolution. I haven't been convinced from research that species evolve to a copmpletly new species.

It depends on how you look at it. My father in law is a preacher and disclaims evolution because he just cant see how you could go from an amoeba to a human. Well you cant look at it from the span of our lifetime. In 80 years not much changes. But over a couple million its different.

Take our appendix. What is it for?!? We dont use it anymore and in several hundred years Id be willing to bet we wont have one at all. You dont walk outside one day and go "gee I wish I could fly" and wake up the next morning with wings.

Perhaps...in the end, we are all afraid to admit... in the end, that little voice in our head - >insert soul here< may stop talking one day.

    Effing brain.

Yep, Evolution is a bunch of BS...as is The Big Bang.
