There's nothing wrong with some healthy debate.

This issue, like so many, comes down to the fact that people only get upset about things that affect them. If it doesn't affect them, they are ready to legislate it to death; be it gun owners, motorcycle riders, smokers, whatever. These people don't realize that they are also in some way tied into the equation, and they are, without knowing it, cutting their nose off despite their face.

The more "rules" you create, the more rules you have to have. Me, I like thinking for myself.

Why else would I argue this point? I WEAR a helmet, but I know that some people enjoy riding without one. Most cagers have zero regard for motorcyclist, I know I live it everyday I ride. There hasn't been a single time on my motorcycle when I haven't had to do some sort of "manuever" to avoid being hit---not a single time.

Even though it was specifically in his contract not to ride motorcycles, Chicago honored his contract and paid him, but if I were them, I wouldn't have.
Just heard about this Ben Reothlisburger incident and saw this thread. The Jay Williams accident was the first thing that came to my mind. What a waste. His entire career is over and the Bulls got f*cked because of it.

My cousin was an EMT and is now an RN in a ER. Says he's seen it happen all too often. Dumbass people riding with no head protection and not enough clothing (shorts and a t-shirt or tank top instead of denim or leather). Oh ya, gotta look like a cool - big badass tuff guy on your crotchrocket with your seatcover wearing next to nothing behind you.

I've seen a lot of people in rehab with different degrees of paralysis because of motorcycle and snowmobile accidents.

Wear a helmet and the proper attire when you ride or you take the risk of wearing / riding a wheelchair for the rest of your life. Or look at it this way - your independent now but you could be dependent on other people for everything if you don't ride and use the proper gear safety gear.

    Off my soapbox now :)

I gotta say, I always wear a helmet, but RARELY wear "appropriate attire". In the heat of the summer, riding ina jacket is damn near painful. I don't usually wear shorts riding, but I have on occassion. Yes, it's stupid, but the only thing you're really saving yourself is road rash.... an aesthetic problem, not necessarily a functional one. It may make my legs LOOK ugly if I'm not wearing riding leathers and get in a crash, but they'll still WORK the same.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Not if you grind off some of the muscle.

I remember riding in shorts and flip-flops, thats it.
A friend and I used to ride from the base to Fresno to make our bike payments in person and we would want to get some sun on the way.
I used to think about sliding down the road with nothing on because the road would have stripped my shorts and flip-flops right off.
The thought was enough to make me ride carefully but not dress appropriately.

When California passed it's helmet law my riding time was cut in half and slowly dwindled to zero.
I still have my bike but I don't enjoy riding enough to be worth it. Even with a little bennie helmet my neck gets fatigue after an hour or two and all day rides make my neck ache pretty bad.

I have wrecked my bike once when a cage made a left while looking right. I went Superman over the hood and landed flat onto my back on the ground. I remember telling myself to tuck my head so it would not hit the ground and I got lucky.
It was luck with a little experience that kept me from smacking my dome on the pavement.

    Bottom line.

I have always believed that decisions like this should be up to the individual. They should be insured so they will not be a burden to society when they are wheelchair bound and drooling on themselves but, it should be a personal decision.

Now that I am older I realize how much a helmet can help but I still believe it should be a choice.

Wow....nice thread. I hope Ben gets well and learns from the experience.

I won't ride my bike without a helmet, and I won't let my son ride without one....freedom? Not in my house. :)

Thats funny because, when our Governator was in a motorcycle accident without a motorcycle indorsement on his license we were told that since the police did not witness the accident they would not cite him.

He got off scott free from a ticket that would have cost anyone else on earth money.
