my son has the nice one.
Hey, in case Hermitism is still watchin' this thread (and hasn't given up on me yet!)... I just got an order of 35 mm film in from B&H today! Goin' to take some pix with your lens this weekend - barring calamity!

Q: When is a Nikon not a Nikon?
A: When it's a Mamiya!

I always wanted a Mamiya 645 medium format camera.2 ch- Polk CRS+ * Vincent SA-31MK Preamp * Vincent Sp-331 Amp * Marantz SA8005 SACD * Project Xperience Classic TT * Sumiko Blue Point #2 MC cartridge

mmmm :- )
I have this weird -- nonlinearity -- when it comes to Mamiya products -- my first real camera was a mamiya/sekor 500TL (from Monkey Wards!), ca. 1973. My son has it now, and other than the light meter being kaput it still works fairly well.

The medium format Mamiya cameras and lenses were danged nice; the aforementioned son has a C330 TLR but I don't think he has one of their medium-format SLRs (I think the 645's an SLR, yes?). I don't think... ;- )
camera stuff is at least as cool as hifi stuff! :- )
It takes up less space, too... but it's not as interesting to listen to...
-
Yeah I think it was a SLR style as the latest ones were mostly automatic. I forgot about the C330. I even look on over really hard before I bought a Bronica SQ, as I loved the looks of the Twin lens reflex like it and the Rolleiflex!2 ch- Polk CRS+ * Vincent SA-31MK Preamp * Vincent Sp-331 Amp * Marantz SA8005 SACD * Project Xperience Classic TT * Sumiko Blue Point #2 MC cartridge

heh -- the boy's got a Bronica, too... he's got the bug pretty bad :- )

He doesn't just collect shelf queens, either -- he feels quite strongly that the only reason to own cameras is to use 'em.
-
That is cool, glad to see he's bitten bad by the right kind of bug. that ETR is a 645 format and their really great for portraits. a 6x9 or bigger medium format would be great for taking pictures of your open country area! I found the Square 6x6 of my SQ hard to compose a great picture with but that has been the Hassey's forte forever.2 ch- Polk CRS+ * Vincent SA-31MK Preamp * Vincent Sp-331 Amp * Marantz SA8005 SACD * Project Xperience Classic TT * Sumiko Blue Point #2 MC cartridge

I see a young Ansel Adam heading out to the wild to grab a few timeless photos.
Not everybody trusts paintings but people believe photographs.
Twelve significant photographs in any one year is a good crop

Finally spent some quality time with some film today! Further results as events warrant...

It is a nice lens; looking forward to see the latent images when they've been de-latent-ized :- )

here is a pic I found from my SQ. never had a meter so I'd take 3 shots of everything and I never got good at composing a shot with the square format.

I have some (film) photos... somewhere...

heres pic of me that Andrea took, I have my Eos-Elan II in my right hand and my medium format in my left, I'm using the elan to meter the shot then I switch to the med format to take a photo. She must have my Eos-Elan I to take this shot.

heh - that's basically what I did with the F today; used my DSLR to check the exposure at ISO 400 and transferred it to the F as a starting point :- )

I'm empathetic.

Did someone say Bryce?
Pano with iPhone...
Queen's Garden... (love the sun hitting the hoodoo on the left!)
Thor's Hammer...
-
Thanks for posting those.
I have to dig out my Bryce photos -- or even better, my father's Bryce photos, taken in the early 1950s on Kodachrome (with an Argus "Brick")... they're all analog, though.
It is a beautiful, beautiful place... -
I only wish I was a better photographer, with a better camera (we do have a nice little Pentax DSLR, but I always resort to auto modes!!).
We hit Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches, Canyonlands, Mesa Verde, Monument Valley, Grand Canyon, and a couple other sites this summer for a nice family vacation. While my family liked Zion the best, Bryce was my favorite. Absolutely beautiful. And, as a bonus, we were there for the astronomy festival - what an unpolluted (light pollution that is) view of the night sky! -
those are some nice shots, loved the pano (pretty cool).
I know how to use a camera and all about F-stops & shutter speed & film speed, and owned a lot of camera from 35mm to medium formats but I never had a artistic ability for taking good shots or composing good pictures. used to have a dark room for making color enlargements (color is easy but B&W isn't).2 ch- Polk CRS+ * Vincent SA-31MK Preamp * Vincent Sp-331 Amp * Marantz SA8005 SACD * Project Xperience Classic TT * Sumiko Blue Point #2 MC cartridge

I don't know about the Pentax, but the manual modes on the Nikon DSLRs are pretty straightforward. Indeed, one of them (called "A") is sort of pseudo-manual. It defaults to the "correct" exposure, but the photographer may independently alter the f-stop, the shutter speed, and/or deliberately under- or over- expose (relative to the default) in 0.3 stop increments! And one may select different metering modes (e.g., to compensate for a large expanse of sky or severe backlighting). I am sure that the Pentax has a similar feature, too.
Funny you mention the night sky at Bryce. I almost expressed the same sentiment in my earlier post! The most vivid and palpable night sky I've ever seen (even better than Alaska... although I've never been mid-ocean) was at Bryce. We sat on a bench on the rim of the canyon one night -- the sky looked like black velvet -- black as black, and the stars were icy pinpoints of bright blue-white light. It didn't look vast or distant -- it seemed somehow vast, and close. Just a stunning sight.
... not that that a clear, moonless sky is chopped livah here in New Hampsta, though...
