    Let me rephrase....

If the Sha-1 has enough inputs, perhaps we can work a trade plus cash, Sha-1 for Sha-Gold with remote.

I hope I'm in the right line....

Another option is to keep the Melos and just get a cd player with a volume control (like the Cal Audio CL-15 that I have).

I have a CL-20 that I would be willing to part with. Rio messed up bad when they discontinued the Cal product lines!

Russ, I feel you on the remote. I wouldn't use them for years, but after getting my MF A3CR pre, I like being able to control the volume from my couch.

Maybe when I have a $30,000 system I'll worry about a remotes impact on my sound...

I have no problem with a remote so long as it is the motorized sort which only turns the control. Although, I guess even the control isn't at its best unless it is a stepped attenuator. I wonder if anyone makes a motorized stepped attenuator? That would be awesome!

They did offer a less expensive one for $105 but you only got one choice of an impedance range, 50K. I'm still looking for a less expensive alternative in the 100k range. If your pot has a stub out the back, you only need the motor/remote.

I almost ordered the $105 kit, but I don't recall it coming with a stepped attenuator. I believe it came with an Alps 50K tapered pot. It was interesting because it could grab voltage off either a 6 or 12 volt rail in a tube circuit (versus the external wall wart in the newer model), and could be controlled by about any universal (the RC didn't come with it.)

I believe you are right. I asked McAlister to look into a remote for his pre amp. One way or another, mine will eventually have one.

    Russ,

I know that we had agreed to trade the SHA-1 straight up for my Onkyo P-301.

Been thinking though, the SHA doesn't have a phono stage, right? You might have to kick in a few extra bones so I can get a phono pre. I was thinking the Onk and a Ben Franklin?

I don't want the 301 man. Got a top loader?

In my living will, Mark gets one, you get the other, period, end of story. If you both are dead, one goes to the bottom of ocean with Mark's CTC, the other gets dropped off at a thrift store.

You're kidding right? How could you sell your beloved CL-20? My CL-15 ain't going nowhere anytime soon. I might just get another one. No preamp needed with this bad boy (single source). I'll start another thread with my recent findings.

    ...a hardcore purist?

I really want some damn remote volume control. Already started window shopping tonight. Big deal, right? Get some remote linestages. Therein lies the problem. I have MELOS SHA-1's. What did The Absolute Sound say about them? I'll tell you what they said - they said 'I doubt one could do substantially better, at any price.' Why do you think I have two of them?

Maybe I should do some reading up on Telekenisis, and moving **** with my brain. Maybe I won't need a remote afterall. This is going to keep me up at night.

    Cheers,
    Russ

    Ok,
I wanna get this straight. So you want a remote to control your 2 channel rig correct? But you feel it's like going to the dark side owning such a thing... Well I think it's like being a modern day Audiophile. Is it really pure or old school? This is the question you gotta ask yourself. Then and only then will you know the way.

The curse of the audiophile... removing useful controls for the sake of trying to prove how hardcore your gear is.

You are not a true audiophile until you have to get up out of your seat to change the volume or to switch CDs in your single disc CDP. You are hardcore when you have to spend 10 minutes cleaning, and then clamping every record to your meticulously setup turntable, where... you still have to get up and change the volume over the course of the 20 minutes per side.

You are not a true audiophile if you even think about using tone controls... hit that tone defeat button buddy, before your license to be an audio snob is revoked! Balance knobs... screw that, remote? Forget it! The remote circuit better have it's own PSU or you should put your head down in shame as you walk by your superiors that toil for that 20 minutes of bliss.

In other words... get a pre with a remote... you will thank yourself later.
