Man, I'm not trying to rain on your parade, but $21500 for the '97 is about $9000 over extra clean wholesale. I'm sure that it's a cream puff but you can do better than that. I would think that where you live you should be able to find plenty of better deals than that. NADA retail on a '98 740il wih 34k miles and the sport package is $22000. So I would think the '97 should sale for $18500 or so. When looking into buying a car of this caliber it pays to do your research and be PATIENT. If you really like the car that much, offer him $19000 and get his reaction.

Hey ND why do you think the 7series has such high depreciation?

The 3 and 5 have good resale value.

First off, the mark up was probably in the 15-20% range when new. Then there's the cost of maintaining a vehicle of that caliber. Most high-end luxury cars depreciate more, percentage wise, than any other type of vehicle. Typically trucks hold there value the best, then SUVs, then rarer sports cars, then minivans, then cars, in that order. Nothing is carved in stone mind you, but thats the order in which they hold there value. Cadillacs and Lincolns depreciate more than any vehicle I've ever seen, except for their trucks and suvs. Some of the odd european makes depreciate pretty bad also, Volvo, SAAB, any French made car, etc.etc....

And lots not forget about demand for the product, either. The 3 and 5 series are highly sought after cars.

It may be that people are just trying to get out from beneath them. Sort of like a merc. 600 series car. They go for less than their 500 series "sisters" after 5 years or so. Much more costly to fix......

haens and ND those are good points but look at the LEXUS LS.

For the past 15 years that thing has held it's value like a sought after sportscar. The 400/430 is the exception of course- cuz you're right. Most don't hold value. Jaguar, Caddy, Lincoln even Audi.

Acura does a respectable job at it.

The average mark up for a domestic vehicle, today, is only about 7-8%, a little higher for higher-end trucks and a little lower for entry level cars. The imports usually have a little more mark up than the domestics, especially the European makes. That's one of the reasons for all the ridiculous incentives, the manufacturers have taken the profit away from the dealers and put it into incentives. I've been in the car biz for 15 years and I've seen the percentage of mark up drop every year and the rebates get larger every year, so when a dealer lets you leave without purchasing a car, most likely he doesn't have anywhere else to go.

The Lexus LS doesn't cost $75-95k either. Look at the percentages. The Lexus is also more in demand on the used market than a 7 series and doesn't cost nearly as much to maintain as the big body Bimmers and Benzes do.

    good point.

Speaking of The new 2007 LExuS LS460 is supposed to be awesome. Have you read anything about it? It's supposed to break the mold again like the original '90 400 did.

As well, I think some of it has to do with the revision of the models. For instance, take the LS400, I believe it was introduced in 1990. There wasn't any major revisions done to that car for many years....So why would I buy a brand new lexus if it is basically the same car as the car from 4 years ago. My wife and I were in this situation in 95 when we were looking for a safe car as we were expecting our first. So we looked at the new LS 400, and they had a 90 on the lot for 14k less and they looked the same. For the most part at least. Look at the Acura NSX, they hold their resale because their "look" hasn't changed, as is the 911 or Ferraris, their changes are slight. Now the Mercedes is a lot different now. All their new cars make older cars, (like my own) look archaic in comparison. I remember when the 560 SEC from 85(?) was the ****, now it just looks "OLD" in comparison to the new S line. Like the cadillacs of today Vs. the cadillacs of the 70's and 80's....(Save the 50's as the 59 Eldorado is still a hot **** car)......I am just rambling now, but I think this sort of makes sense. Lastly, not really, let's take a look at the M3 (225hp), that generation was holding its resale real well, until the newer 300+ rocket came out. Same as the E55....you can get a 2000 on the cheap, as 300 HP isn't anything compared to the 450+ you can grab now.

    Whew....done for now..

I haven't read up on the new LS yet, I've been very disappointed with where Toyota/Lexus has taken their styling the last several years. The previous generation LS was, to me, a much sharper car. The greenhouse on the present generation LS/Avalon is way to tall for my taste. That's why I think everyone has fallen in love with the 300C and Charger. I'd rather drive a little less reliable nice looking car than a reliable cookie cutter, bland car, but that's just me. I can live with a car having to make an occasional trip in for warranty repair or recall. Luckily with my last 6-7 cars and trucks that hasn't been an issue. Statistics like what Power and Consumer Reports can be very deceptive. Most people that are happy with there cars don't report it. But almost everyone that has a bad experience reports it with a passion.

    Hello,
When you drive a BMW , you become the car. You and the road are one.
I have owned a BMW 328i 2000 year model. It was a Premium and cold weather model. 5 speed black with Tan leather interior. I gotta say it was the very best driving car I have ever had the pleasure of owning. Believe the hype about BMW. It's not a rich mans can to show off, it's a pur driving machine made for people who love to drive.
I traded it in for a few different reasons. I wanted to keep it for my selfish self but my family comes first and the need for a SUV for myself with an automatic was more in place. My wife can't drive a stcik so she didn't drive it. I started mountain biking and I didn't want a bike rack on my Beemer. I planned on a X5 but for 70k I didn't want it that bad. So I got a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder Se. I love my truck but it's not anywhere in the same league as my Beemer was.

I drove a 2006 BMW 330i with a Steptronic sport/Premium/cold weather loaded model and I didn't care for the automatic. I was happy to get back into my car when I left the dealership. the new

I plan on a 5 series next year. I'm considering a 545i. It's more in my price range and the M5 is out of reach. I miss my car so much. I f I can swing it, I will get my love back....we shall see what the future brings,

I am banking on this, as my lease is up on my A6 next year and I am hoping, praying, slobbering, working myself into a lather....J/K. that I can get into a 03' RS6, "certified" for 50K or less

Exactly, when a new body style comes out the bottom drops out of the value of the previous model.

I came within a c%$# hair of buying a 99 328is sport with a 5speed, and your observation is dead on. It was one of the most connected cars I've ever driven, except for the 03 up M3. I can kick myself for not getting it.

    Hello

When you drive a 78 VW Rabbit Diesel, it takes you places you haven't gone before, you feel as one with the car, as it takes about 2 minutes before the glow plugs heat up, to a point when you can even crank it over. This gives you plenty of time to smell the fabric, soak in the ambiance, and read a few chapters from Hamlet if that is your thing. When the plugs are finally heated to a point you can start it, go ahead and turn that key. What a sound, close your eyes, as you don't really want to see that cloud of black smoke that just came out of the pencil (no.2) sized tailpipe. But your neighbors will notice, but it doesn't matter, your eyes are closed and you are mesmorized by the purr of that diesel. Much like a choking sound, but you are not sure. You put it in drive and mash the pedal. You are on a journey to getting to 60 in 30 seconds. So go agead and put that 6.00 latte to your lips, as there is no chance you are going to spill it at these speeds. When you come up to a stop light, roll down that window and crank the tunes, as you know you are "the man", wink at that hottie next to you, she is not digging you, it is the car. Snap out of it...

Disclaimer: I have never actually owned a 78 VW Rabbit Diesel, but my buddy had one passed down to him when I was in High School....

    Scott

Edit: Dan, this is in no way supposed to offend.....when I read your post I was thinking of a commercial, so I was thinking what it would of been like for a VW commercial in 78' Anyway....I would say go with an M3.......the newer, definitely the better, the SMG is a really good tranny, although from what I read, the new Audi A3 has gone beyond the SMG....setting a new benchmark in Auto's...
