What my 69 Mustang Coupe will look like when finished. This is exactly like the one in my basement in various stages disassembly. The only (although major) difference is this car has a 428 SCJ in it and mine has a 390 (which is actually more rare)...

...and I don't have a pic of my daily driver Focus ZX5 or the 69 Mach I that was bought for the parts and I will now probably restore because it is a fairly unusual original color combination which might make it worth something.

    Hey, Shack,

Wasn't 1969 the first year for the 351? That engine and the 428CJ left the 390 kinda hangin' like a 3rd person on a date didn't it?

I had a 68 coupe until last summer with deluxe interior, console, hood lights, etc. with the C-code 289. Great solid TX car totally rust free. In fact, today I sold off the last of the extra parts the I had laying around, an oil pan set.

If I was to get another Mustang, it would be a 69 convertible with the 351.

Yes it was. It was the 351 Windsor, which is what my 69 Mach I has. It is actually a very good all-round engine for the Mustang. I can be built up a little to make it fairly strong but not as heavy as the 390 or 428s so it is very drivable. In 1970 they came out with the 351 Cleveland for the Mach I which was a REALLY nice motor and is still a fairly sought after version.

I have a friend of mine that sold his restored Pantera to finance the restoration of a 70 Mach1 Fastback that was Grabber Orange, with Vermillion interior, 351C, factory louvres. I though he was crazy for selling the Pantera, but when he landed in the back feature in Mustang Illustrated, I forgave him.

Real nice car, just about perfect as a wellrounded sports car. The only drawback was the blind spots in the fastbacks. Only to get worse from 71-73!

I guess if I won the lottery, my Stang of choice would be the 69-70 Shelby GT500. The sleek front is just way cool.:D

My Galaxie has a 352 4V in it which was a nice motor. You are right about the 390. It was basically a motor used in the big T-Birds and Galaxie Station wagons and not a true High Performance engine. They started putting it in the Mustangs in 67 to combat the 396 Camaros. No match really. The real beast came in 68 with the 428 CJ. Also the 351 Windsor was really just a 302 block with bigger heads. That's why the redesigned big block 351 Cleveland was so popular.

There is a reason they started calling those 71-73 Mustangs "Flattops".

If I could have any Mustang...in order...

    1969 Boss 302 - I wanted one SOOOOOOOO bad in 1969!

1971 Boss 351 (one of the rarest and fastest Boss Cars and it is generally overlooked as a car to have)

    1965 Shellby GT-350

Followed by a host of others.......

A small town banker that I know in the top of TX, has quite a stable. The last time that I spent the afternoon in his garage he had a black and gold GT350H, an Acapulco Blue 69 GT500 (498 of 500 point restoration), a 68 GT 428CJ, 2 428CJ 70 Machs and just for something different, he has 2 Buick GNX from the last year made, that have 0 miles on them! He ordered them to simply store.

His wife enjoys them just about as much as he does, too.

Bob has always had those unsold models. I have enjoyed watching his ebay auctions for a couple of years with all the NOS items he unloads. Some unreal prices are achieved.

Quite the collector, and a nice guy to boot.

Yep....The Black Boss 429 has about 8,000 miles on it, the White Boss 351 has 2,800 and the Orange 302 is the low milage car:D.

He also has a 73 convertible that has less than three (3) miles on the odometer.

Well.....actually there was....the 68 428 CJ was blowing the doors off the 396 Camaro's on the drag strips (which was why Ford developed it in the first place). I know you said "In my mind", but this is the reason why you started seeing COPOs like the ZL-1 in 69.

    69camarozl1.jpg

The SS396 is a fine example of the musclecar era. A good friend had a 70 SS396 (375 HP). Pretty fast but not as fast as another buddy's 69 GTO RamAir V. (now that was a beast).

Hey, I have that exact picture! lol

Yeah, I did say 'in my mind.' I wasn't necessarily speaking of power and speed. 'In my mind,' I just don't think a Rusta, uhh, I mean a Mustang will ever compare to a Camaro. Not to say I don't like Mustangs. I would actually love to have an old Mustang; they just have a certain look and feel about them. The Camaros just have more of that.

I guess there will alway be a "Bowtie" vs "Blue Oval" debate and each has their points.

The buying public at large thought more of the Mustang as shown by sales:

    Mustang - 1967 - 1970 = 1,280.076

    Camaro - 1967 - 1970 = 699,163

(late model numbers were even more heavily weighted to the Mustang)

Both won championships in Trans Am racing and NHRA

Its all fun....It's always cool to compare your favorite to the other guy's.....

BTW....I really like the new 2005 Mustang! What do you think of the 2005 Camaro? OOPs....my bad....there isn't one. ;)

Oh I know that there is speculation that a 07 is on the drawing board but given GMs financial woes, gas prices, relationship with Canada where the Camaro plant was located, etc, I wouldn't hold my breath.

    0409phr_camaro_13_z.jpg

This picture that Grimster posted earlier is only a "best guess" computer rendering that is in no way connected to GM. It would be a cool car if ever produced but I don't think it will happen.

That new Camaro looks hot! I hope they make it, even if I will never be able to afford it.
My first car was a 1975 ford mustang II Ghia with a 302. My second was a 1973 Mustang Mach 1 with a 351 clevland, both cars had balls!

    Currently have:
    2000 Chrysler Voyager, 3.3 Mitsubishi V6
    1992 Jeep Cherokee, 4.0 inline 6
    1989 Chevy Silverado short box 1/2 ton . 4.3 V6

GM won't build it because they're into ugly plain vehicles lately (excusing them for those funky bug/trucks)

I think GM will put out a new Camaro. Since Ford has come out with that beautiful new Mustang and they are selling like hotcakes, I think GM will try to jump on the bandwagon.

It was stupid of them to kill the platform anyway and it would seem kind of cheesy to be copying Ford but I would love to see GM come out with a retro Camaro. The '67 and '71 models were my favorites.

Both Pontiac and chevy will be releaseing a F body car next year. They felt it was nessary to move the GTO project forward then bring back the F body.

This is what I heard from a Pontiac dealer.

Ugh. The GTO. What a let down.

I cant believe Pontiac butchered what is arguably the baddest car ever to drive on the street. It looks like a Grand Am!

I really hope they do the Camaro/Firebird right this time.

Im guessing they will cause I think the new Monte Carlo looks pretty good.

I wonder what the new Thunderbird is gonna look like......oh, yeah..that's right......there ain't one....!! LOL (and thank goodness since it was uuuggglllyyy!!!!!)

    All in good sport...

I really hope Chevy will come out with a new Camaro, and I hope it looks a lot like that rendering. That would be awesome. Then, if they'd put the new 'Vette Z06 engine in it (I believe they call it 'LS2'), that'd be unreal!!

I bought three posters of older cars yesterday. One's of two Shelby Cobras, a 427 and a 289 (or whatever the one I wouldn't own is), one's of a red 1969 Z28/RS Camaro with the 302, and the other one's of a 1979 Trans-Am with T-tops and the Eagle on the hood.

We ate at Cracker Barrel last night for supper, and while we were waiting (forever), I looked through a book about cars from the 60's. Of course I went straight to the Carmaros. In 1969 you could get a Z28 for $2588. 1969 is also the only year you could get the aluminum racing 427 in a camaro; only 69 were ordered with it. Just that option cost about $4100!!! The Z28 would do the 1/4 mile in the low 15's, while one equiped with the 427 would do it in 13.1 seconds. I'd say that's great by today's standards, much less for back then!!

Maybe I should be on the look out for a '69 Camaro with the all-aluminum 427............with $150,000 ready.....:p
