Heat rises and board level components are quite hardy. That's about as big as it gets for an iron core transformer. Beautiful.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Nope! Not in most of their multi-channel amps. Otherwise it would probably be over 100lbs.

Been feeling kinda left out since I sold off most of my 2-channel system (all the Parasound and Mirage are gone :( )

Well, in light of the recent scores that I've made on a couple pair of vintage Polks from my local Craigslist (RTA-11T and Monitor 7B), I've been itching to get some decent amplification to them. I've tried them both out using a so-so Yamaha 2ch receiver. Sound was good, but I was finding them harsher that I remembered my Monitor 5A sounding, even after replacing the tweeters with new silks. So, anyway I did pretty well on an auction earlier this week and I scored an NAD 317 integrated amp. This is circa 1997, 80wpc, with the usual NAD headroom and low impedance capability.

So here it is, I'll skip the front shot since most NAD look the same. The back is nothing special either. Just generic gold plated RCAs. They are plain jane on the outside, but pretty on the inside:

    NAD317002.jpg

That transformer is about the size of a salad plate. Wide and somewhat Flat. Very nice extruded heat sinks are bolted to the frame on the corners and are completely open on the bottom to let air through. I like that! Very solid construction.

    NAD317008.jpg

Full relay switching of the inputs. One of the best ways to do it.

    NAD317007.jpg

Nice power supply section. I've seen many that have bigger caps, but NAD chooses to use 3 smaller caps on each side for faster recharging. Nice quality parts everywhere though.

    NAD317006-1.jpg

Two matched pairs for each channel. That's about what you'd expect from a quality 80wpc amp. I've had a Sony 100wpc that had the same general complement. That Yamaha receiver I've been using is rated at 80wpc and it only has one matched pair...can you say exaggerated specs?

I like how the transistors are solidly bolted on with a crossbar to ensure even contact pressure. So many amps rely on sticky pads alone and one screw in the top part of the transistor.

Anyway. How does it sound? Well, I found there is a buzz in the left channel (apparently this model has a known issue with this, but its an easy fix), but otherwise, its quite magical when hooked to my 7Bs. I can't believe how good this relatively low budget setup sounds. NAD and Polks seem to have some sort of synergy going on.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

billbillw - You know whats sad? At first glance, I instantly recognized that circuit layout as NAD - that was before my eye caught the name on the power supply. I think I need to take a break from this hobby..:D

Meanwhile folks, heres two shots of the Lamm LL2 Deluxe...

Even sadder is that I no longer have that NAD. It went back to the seller due to the buzzing and a few other problems that were leading me to think that it would end up being a major lemon.

Still on the lookout for an integrated to go with my vintage Polks. I might try out a vintage Luxman that is local to me...

It replaced the McAlister Audio ML-2 for the last month since it started singing. I don't see the ML-2 be back in action soon. Here is the outside and the guts. 2 mono SRPP channels, each has it's only power transformer, choke, and filament transformer. Everything went well except my sucky paint job :o

Nope if the el cheapo creator spent more $$$$ on a larger chassis than an aluminum storage box :D
Edit: I will be traveling in the next few coming week. If anyone wants to try this ugly beast, drop me an email via the forum. I will ship it to you for a month of tube pleasure. Keep in mind, it has only one input and is a linestage preamp.

Thank you! And yes, for the time being. I plan on replacing the strips with 5 way binding posts.

More Icepower, popped the top of my EVS 500M. Nice and simple, everything direct wired, even the binding posts are bypassed in favor of direct wiring.
