A CAT always lands right side up.
  • The ironic thing is it looks like he was carrying a load of lumber (possibly for repairing the bridge) when he fell through. It might have been the total weight of the lumber plus the CAT that was too much.

Ya those bridges were built for horse and buggy, not excavators

I shared the image of that poor covered bridge moments ago with our town administrator. ;)
I am sure it's true everwhere in this high-tech era, but the advent of GPS-powered navigation has led to truly mind-numbing abuse and reckless endangerment of covered bridges throughout New England in the last 10 to 15 years. :/

Can't imagine why he tried that. See it all the time.. Try NYC & Brooklyn with the bridges posted 12.××ft & with a 13ft6 trailer & I fit under. My first time i got out & looked. I was told it was fine. Fine my a$$ It was to distract trucks BUT when they needed the product it was ok to go under

Being in the paving industry for 38+ years I could easily fill a book with dumb truck driver moves; fires, rollovers, pressure filling an unvented 10,000 gallon tank with fuel, driving off the scales, etc. Numero uno though is forgetting to put the dump body down. Truck body vs. overpass the overpass wins every time. Truck body vs. 3 phase powerlines will start a spectacular fire that neither one wins. Truck body vs. guard shack overhang has the truck coming out on top as the guard shack gets completely destroyed. Truck body vs. sand elevator is a draw with the driver being the big loser and fired on the spot.
One of the better ones was a driver keeping his foot in it with the body raised after dumping his load of hot mix. 6 broken telephone poles and a tipped over dump truck in the newly laid blacktop was the outcome of that one.

I was scouting around YouTube recently & came across a truck coming up on a low bridge . He was hauling a 50yard container. He stopped. Dropped the container which is hooked to the cable & dragged it till he got under the low bridge & then backed up & loaded it back on his truck. I was amazed. He did it like he did it daily.

My Stepdad drove heavy equipment for Ramsey County MN for 40 years. I remember being too sleepy to ride shotgun with him on a snowplow run. Good thing I was too lazy to get out of bed that night because he found a manhole opening that was not properly marked or ramped on a new piece of road. The wing blade caught it and broke loose, cutting the passenger seat in that cab in half.

Should have used the grade 8 bolts, budget constraints just wouldn't allow for that 12 cent extra in costs.
