Looks to me like an adventurous soul did that with a Dremel tool and a couple sets of 25 year old Y splitters from Best Buy.

I am still leery of buying it and taking a chance on it. I don't know enough myself to have it reversed or anything and would hate to spend that kind of money and then pay to have it looked at. If they lowered it down to like $1000 or $1400, I might take a chance but, again, I would want it looked at.
BRIAN! I'm gonna go Three Stooges Moe on you! lol
Just wait for the next one dude :)

From your consideration statement - man, for me it would HAVE to be the $1000 AND okay for me to personally remove the top and inspect this mod, AND to be able to return it if I wasn't happy for any reason.

Even then, with TMR's flat rate shipping of $179 on items of this heft, and even if you were to use their account for shipping, that would be $360 to satisfy curiosity if it didn't work out.

Who knows what else this thing's been through. It'd keep you up nights, pacing back and forth, slowly turning you into Rain Man. Kmart, boxers, 246 toothpicks...

I told them they can make payments. $500 to me now, $500 to me later and then I would gladly take this abomination off their hands.

Just for the record, it's only an abomination until Brian owns it.
Then it'll be a unique piece of gear he got for a steal.

Might just be the lighting, and may be nothing at all, but one of those 5703 tubes in the photos (second tube from the left) looks like it's browned inside. It's also got a fair amount of dust inside the case and the external scratches to me indicate that whoever owned it previously didn't take excellent care of it.

From this photo? Side note, does anyone ever have trouble with these tubes? What do you replace them with?

I think the 5703 tubes are still available from a few sources. They’re not expensive from what I remember last time I looked for a pair of them.

They're supposed to last for thousands of hours the way MF uses them. I've heard claims of 10,000 or more hours. They're usually soldered in place on the leads as the photo above shows.

I've replaced them. Kind of a pain, but doable. The leads are soldered in place and the rubber grommets have a thin piece of wire holding them down, which is also soldered in place. The stock tubes are good, but there's a premium version, which is better.

Agreed, that one tube does not look the same and the rubber grommets are very different. Someone has changed that tube.

A tidbit of info. The 5703 was designed for use in US missile guidance systems and are guaranteed to survive a nuclear blast.

I'm out. After what Jess told me and I am reading in here, its a hard pass for me even if they emailed back and accepted my offer. I will stick with the T+A until another one of them comes along.

@erniejade, in the short term you could settle for a MF A3.2 Integrated. One is listed on US Audio Mart. It seems a little overpriced but everything has gone up. It has two remotes which to me might mean the volume button doesn't work on the regular remote. Original packaging. It says Mint and is pickup in NJ.

I have one of these in my bedroom, and I will never get rid of it. Mine has upgraded Cardas speaker terminals.

I saw that and a A308, Musical Fidelity A1008. The 1008 really caught my eye and I think Troy has one but, I think I want to hold out for a Tri-Vista.

Not for nothing but the A1008 is a beast. It is supposed to be sonically indistinguishable from the KW500. I don’t know that to be true but I’ve heard the KW and it’s definitely cut from the same cloth.

The Tri Vista, IMO has a bit more shine in the upper mids/low treble than the KW but I heartily recommend the A1008 as a destination piece..

@Tonyb, Jesse is the best one to answer your questions. I read many posts by him regarding Musical Fidelity over the years including quite a few A3.2 comments. I would say he is responsible for my having the A3.2 and an A5 which I think of as mine ( ;) ) although it stays at my woman's house.

I like both. I happened to discover the A3.2 first and purchased it. Then I purchased the A5 from the same man two weeks later. He sold those two units because he had a new in-the-box A3.2. He still has it. He and I became friends; MF owners are good people.

I think the A3.2 is built and looks better, but the A5 has more power (250 watts vs 115 watts at 8 ohms). The sound is similar but the greater power can be sensed in the A5. Some people say the A5 has more of a "tube sound".

The A3.2 is a fully dual-mono integrated amplifier with separate transformer windings for the preamp stage and amplifier side. The A5 is a dual-mono design and has a single transformer winding for both preamp stage and amplifier side.

The A3.2 is used with Polk SDA 2B's. The A5 is used with Paradigm Studio 60's. I probably should swap them since the Paradigms are easier to drive. Both make me happy.

How do these older 'A' models compare to the newer Nu-Vista integrateds, or the M_xi/si integrateds?
