Following the untimely demise of the “other” thread, this thread can help keep anyone with an interest up to date on what the situation is as it develops.

Try and keep your politics out of the discussion (in accordance with Club Polk guidance - and they own the forum).

Some information from the previous discussion:
  • The Tracker From John Hopkins University of global infections. This is frequently behind the current situation from other credible local sources, frequently even a day late (sometimes longer), but it still seems to be the most complete source of data that is updated at least daily.
  • The U.S. Center for Disease Control & Prevention Home Page. Updated at noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
  • W.H.O. Response Home Page, with daily updates.
Also, the effect according to age and contributing factors etc.
wave2be0q5lq.jpeg

At the moment, three countries have enacted a strict quarantine outside of China. They are Italy, France and Spain.
  • The number of cases outside of China tripled within a week from last Friday, March 6.
  • The number of cases outside of China will exceed those in China within 24 hours (as of today, March 14).
  • More than 75% of cases detected have recovered in China. 25% of those detected in Iran have recovered.
  • No other country exceeds a recovery rate of 10%.
  • The epicenter is currently Europe, especially Italy and Spain, but also France and Germany.

This is a picture sent by a friend, who lives in Milan, showing how the quarantine is working there.

    Effects, according to @Joey_V
    Joey_V wrote:

    1. Primary lung, ground zero - in 3 phases.

First phase: Viral reproduction within the 2 classes of lungs cells, mostly killing mucous clearing ciliary cells and then flooding the airway with debris and fluids.

Next phase: Immune system activates, but dysregulated, killing healthy lung tissue, now clogging up the airways with even more debris.

Third phase: Lung damage builds, punched out lesions like a honeycomb occur, likely secondary to your own immune system's hyperactive response. These will scar and cause lasting lung defects even if you survive.

    2. GI tract - Covid-19 can enter the GI tract, causing GI sx and allow for fecal route spread.

    3. Blood borne - invades the blood stream, causing cell lines to diminish. Look for decreased white count, decreased platelets. Causes a cytokine storm, a final bid for the body to send immune cells to fight off the infected tissue, killing the infected tissue.

Covid-19 causes a hyper-response from your body, instead of bringing a gun to a gun fight, the body brings it bazookas, destroying the virus WHILE causing some significant healthy tissue destruction.

In addition to cytokine storm, the body has diminished o2 carrying capacity/pumping, thereby causing multiorgan failure.

You might not die, you might survive... but don't be surprised if you're not the same as you were before.

So much for no politics, eh? Bravo, I am secretly applauding you John, as this thread has disaster written all over it (and I don't mean the pandemic kind either) anyway.
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

Are you going to list everyone who doesn't have the virus or just the POTUS? Why did you feel it was necessary to mention him, specifically?

That's why it might look like a political comment.

So simply saying his name and he doesn't have Wuhan is political now? That is one hell of a stretch.

I think world leaders are within the bounds of this thread, IMO. Sure, it may trigger some, but again, IMO their health and well being matters to us all.

That being said, Michigan now has 25 presumptive cases that have tested positive.

The Mrs and I, and our son, cancelled our dinner reservation tonight at a large venue, due to taking precautions, and went instead to our favorite Vietnamese restaurant. We wanted to celebrate his new job in Wahsington DC!

We were the only ones in there! They usually are standing room only on Saturday night! Smaller place, max 50 persons. The roads were nearly empty too. Seems like everyone is hunkering down.

Anyone who saw the press conference could see that he was short of breath and seemed sick. Plus he had close contact with more than one person who later found out they had coronavirus. I think it was on everyone's mind who was in the know on current affairs. I'm relieved that he doesn't have it and he needs to be more careful regarding all the hand shaking and do some social distancing to the extent that it may be possible for him.

Mentioning a politician by name doesn't mean talking politics.

Btw, policy pertaining to the virus is pertinent to the discussion. The president. Congress, are all part of that policy making process.

So, don't start threads that require discussion that will obviously lead to mentioning policy brought forth by politicians or government agencies like the CDC. They themselves are a political entity in some ways also.

I also read that if you have had this virus once, you can still get it again, and again... The drugs used to treat it, at least in China, have a short term effect on the heart muscle. The leading cause of death in subsequent infections?

    Yep... heart attack.

Recent reports have said that the virus is spreading even faster and has a rise in the death toll. More and more cases are reported every day and now reaching more than 30 countries, China still has the greatest number.
According to doctors on the frontline in China's Wuhan City, it is still possible to get infected by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) for the second time leading to death from fatal heart failure in some cases.
The claim of reinfection is made by doctors currently working in Hubei Province, the epicenter of the epidemic. As of February 25, China has reached a total of 78,064 infected cases and 2,715 deaths.

I think the kids are the main carriers/transmitters. I'm glad they are closing all the schools around me for at least 14 days. It wouldn't surprise me one bit to see that get extended to a month or more.

Also, because of the fact that it is contagious and spread by people who are non symptomatic we need to wise up and everyone needs to wear a mask when assembling in any kind of group. Enough with the propaganda about masks not being effective.

The CDC is a scientific entity and the majority of staff, if not all, are not elected.
