We have a 2014 Jeep GC Summit and honestly, it is 4823942308209340892308942390 times better than my BMW ever was. Maintenance has been simple oil changes and a set of tires. It is coming due for brakes soon.
Otherwise, there have been 2 recalls on it that our dealer resolved in less than a day each.
It has been very trouble free. And it does everything we need it to do...comfortable for days on end travel, great highway manners, handles off road duties well (I have a friend who lives above Boulder at ~10k feet and there is a 6 miles long stretch of unmaintained road that leads to his house). It tows well (my brother's 30ft pontoon boat, a 27' travel trailer, a car trailer with a couple of pallets of lumber). I use a hitch hauler for my dirtbike with it and it will comfortably carry 5 people and luggage.
Of course, I have a friend who had nothing but problems with his 2013 Overland. Constantly at the dealer for issues. He ultimately had Chrysler buy it back and moved on to a Honda.
I have driven the SRT8 and while fun, the only things it offers over our Summit is the "track" mode and more power. But with the Hemi in the Summit and ~$11k installed, I can add a Ripp Supercharger, maintain the warranty and hand the stock SRT8 its **** and still be $20k under the base price of an SRT8.

The new Bronco does look keen (nifty, even) -- but I don't think I'll ever be able to afford one (i.e., rationalize the expense of buying one).

As I mentioned before, I'm on my second Durango (both Citadel's) and my brother is on his second Durango (now RT). Absolutely fantastic vehicle! I put over 90000 on my first one and only changed the tires. No other problems. When I originally looked at the differences between the Jeep and Dodge the big difference to me was the size. The Durango, I believe is 8" - 1' longer and you can tell the difference in the back cargo area. We do a lot of travelling and hauling a lot of stuff and this was a significant difference. Styling is personal preference and I prefer the Dodge interior and exterior. If you go leather make sure you get the heated and cooled seats + the heated steering wheel. At first I didn't care about having this feature but it is a great. When you remote start it, below 30 degrees the seats and steering wheel heat up and above 80 degrees the seats cool. In the winter, I don't wear gloves so when I get in the car and grab the steering wheel my whole body warms up....nice!
As far as how it drives, I've never been in an SUV that drives better IMO.
V8 all the way. I personally hope I don't ever have to buy a vehicle with anything else. The hemi is great and the newer 8 speed they're using is also nice._____________________________________________________________________________________________

This is Jasmine the day we picked her up. Only 2 options available on the 2014 Summit (besides the drivetrain options, colors) were the block heater and the rear seat blu ray entertainment system. It had both.
We did get an extended 3rd party warranty on it. Just in case but have yet to have to even use it.

You couldn't have picked two more unreliable brands. Between the two I'd take the Dodge.
I might second that thought. While I imagine every brand has their share of lemons, anything mass produced will, these 2 brands always seem to have troubles with long term reliability. Jeep in particular, everyone that I know who has bought one, dumped them within 3 years.
Maybe it's just my tolerance for crap that breaks down as I age gets lower and lower. I dunno man, not knocking the OP for his choice, buy what you want it's your coin. All I can say is, I wouldn't put up with stuff that breaks down from a lawnmower/dishwasher/TV....let alone a 50k+ vehicle.

Good point. The older I get i find myself getting more pissed about an inferior product that I've paid good $$ for. -
Everyone has their likes and hates...I have owned Jeeps for the past 30 years and never a serious problem and never left me stranded. Have also owned Dodges since 1985 and never a serious problem as well, lots of pros and cons from all but in the end it's what puts the smile on your face each time you start her up

I believe thats when Dodge Chrysler was at their all time low. Like Chevy in those years most american cars where really bad.
From what I'm learning they have got a lot better recently but I don't have to pull the trigger Until like May-July time frame so I got time to get all kinds of learn on.Dan

I had a jeep.... once... 2007 4 door. Took it to Silverton, CO to ride the trails. Started it up one morning mid way through the trip and the lights, wipers and blinkers were all going full speed. No matter what I did I could not turn anything off. Not a single switch worked. Multiple turn offs and restarts and still no control over the them. Finally disconnected the battery for an hour and when I re-connected all seemed to be OK. Came home and sold it. That's my story.
Found Lexus soon after that, used ones that is. I'm not in the circle that can buy them new. But to be able to pick up a $65k car for about $10k or less when it's been extremely well cared for and garaged and pampered all it's life by an older driver. Works for me. We have 6 LS models in the family now from 220k miles down to 55k miles. Built to last and it's the kind of ride I enjoy.
But my buddies buy and use jeeps all the time with few problems. Each to their own I say. Find what works for you and stick with it.Music: Oppo103 - Parasound JC2 - Parasound A21- SDA 3.1

Jeep owners IME are fiercely loyal. We have a friend back in MA who has bought Jeep after Jeep (mostly Grand Wagoneers, back in their day -- not sure which model she has now). She loves 'em. They break, they rust, they strand her -- she keeps buying them. She loves them.
I think the Jeep owners' loyalty is a lot like that of Harley-Davidson owners.
Not a rational thing.
As a person who uses single-ended vacuum tube amplifiers & 1950s-era studio monitor loudspeakers, it is a bit hard for me to find fault with that perspective, though
For the record, we had identically one Jeep -- a hand-me-down 1984 (AMC-era!) "Wagoneer" from my father-in-law. In 1984, the "Wagoneer" was a trim variant on the then-new Cherokee platform. Ours had, paradoxically, a 2.5 L 4 cyl engine (that ancient cast iron GM 4 cyl of the 1960s, as I understood it) and a 5 speed manual transmission. It was attractive but a complete hunk of junk. I will say that it never stranded me anywhere. It used to die in the driveway at home. We sold it to the chief of police (!) in our town, as a first car for one of his kids. It served them pretty well in that role, as far as I know, for a couple of years, as it slowly rusted away. -
Funny you mention this:

Another vote for looking at 4Runners. I sold mine last year, but solely to get rid of a car payment. It was a joy to drive and could handle about anything off road or snow-related. I went with the limited as it gave you the best road ride, but the TRD would be better for offroading.2007 Club Polk Football Pool Champ

It may have been an hallucination but I thought I read that the modern 4Runners no longer set on a separate frame (i.e., they're not trucks any more). They still look sort of truckish, but (???) I thought I read that they're truly "SUVs" now -- like most everything else.
-
The 4Runner is still body on frame into the 2017 model year and last refreshed in 2014. Still made in Japan and still sell really well. The Lexus GX460 is also still body on frame although uses a different platform to the 4Runner. I still consider the 4Runner to be a disguised truck, not an SUV. The Limited trim line is sort of in the same market as a Grand Cherokee V6 but the Jeep is far better on road because it is on a large car chassis. The other trim lines of the 4Runner are part time 4WD or RWD trucks.
-
Been through two 4runners and would take both of them back. Solid vehicles that can handle the miles. I do prefer the older body style, pre 2002, but most of those have well over 200k miles on them now, but still being sold.Music: Oppo103 - Parasound JC2 - Parasound A21- SDA 3.1

Can confirm, my 4Runner was body on frame and a beast offroad or in the snow. While it wasn't the most comfortable highway cruiser, the Limited model really helped compared to the SR5 I test drove initially. I wish I could have kept it, but I'd like to retire at some point, and a $600 a month car payment wasn't helping.

Cool -- where the heck did I read (or think I had read) otherwise.
Trucks -- should be trucks. That's the way I look at it.
We do have two SUVs -- but we also have a truck. A little truck, but a truck.
For truck stuff.
EDIT: I shoulda checked; here's a one-stop shopping list of body on frame "SUVs" from 2016 (close enough to "now" for Government work):
