SDA CRS budget build.

Hello All, I recently picked up a pair of SDA CRSs (in need of a MW6503). To kick off the build I'm getting a pair of RDO-194s from @Toolfan66 . The plan is to up grade the tweets and the crossovers to accommodate the 194s. Also going to delete the dimensional tweeter, and in its place they're going to have steel blanks made to seal that space. I have a buddy at work who happens to be a pretty good fabricator. I gave him the drawling's of the stands and modded 'em for maximum weight, stability and personal preference (height wise). We chose 1in X 1in solid steel for the base for weight and 1/4in thick 1x1in steel tubing for the rest of the frame. For whom may be concerned the stands will be spiked. I haven't picked those out yet. I'd post the pic of the custom drawling's but it wont let me. The file is in pdf format. A list of other things needed competing:
  • Power grab the mags
  • Dynameting the baskets/list]

Consider hollow tubing loaded with lead shot. I loaded 22lbs. of shot into each stock stand, which made quite a difference.

^^ Thanks for the idea @F1nut. I'll talk to my buddy next shift tonight about adding the shot.

The RDO-194s are on the way and the material for the stands has been ordered. I'll post photos of the stands progress when the build begins.

After the cost of the materials for the stands, the case of beer for the fabricator (and gift card), the tweeters a MW6503 and dynamat; I'm not sure why I decided to call this thread a "budget build". I haven't even started with the cross overs yet.

^^ No problem I used @DarqueKnight 's post from this thread: http://forum.polkaudio.com/discussion/40273/crs-stands-dimensions for the dimensions.

Does anyone know how much the original CRS stands weighed?

They are not heavy, they are hollow. Maybe 5-8 lbs each, Ill give better guess tomorrow.

You could also weld threaded fill plugs/bungs and fill with a heavyweight oil. I've done this before on industrial tubing to rid the ringing.

    ^^Thanks for checking.

^^I am using solid square stock at the base and thick wall steel tubing for the rest of the construction. @F1nut suggested using lead shot to add weight. I fell like that may be the most effective route if they "don't make the cut". Based on the shipping weight of the material we guesstimated that each stand will be ~15 lbs.

I just felt them and maybe a bit more than 8lbs...like 10lbs. Im not great at guessing weight but they definitely are not 20 lbs. and I guess under 15lbs for sure. To be clear these are CRS+ stands from 1989-90.

  • Update:
(cuz I know you all are dying to know the progress on this build lol)

I called Polk cs a week ago for the MW6503 and was informed that I'll be able to place an order by the end of this month. Around that time I will have ordered the Dynamat as well.

Now as far as the stands go.. . Well that part of the project has gone on hold for at least several months. My colleague at work who agreed to make the stands won't be able to start until February. (To make a long story longer) He is in the AirForce Reserve and has recently changed departments. This has required him to start the training program for this department, its a program you start when theirs an available spot open and training is over 1000 miles away. We (the rest of my team at work) are just finding out about this and the program is ~10 months long.

Next updates should include photos of Dynamated speaker baskets and glued magnets.

    Cheers

I would think 20+ pounds of lead would stop ringing without worrying about the EXXON Valdez in the room:)

Okay so I got the material to make the stands back from the guy who had agreed to make them for me. Does any one know someone that might be interested in making these stands. I live in the Western part of NC if that helps. I'm trying to keep the ball moving the best I can with this project.

^^ For sure, It's an option I'll checkout.

Meanwhile I'm going to place an add on CL to see in any one in the area would be interested in making these speaker stands. Does anyone know of other sites that are good for seeking out specific trades like welding?

luckily When i bought my CRS+'s they included the stands, wish I had Larry's (lord of the rings) skills to make my stands with the external crossovers like he has done.

The man man has turn out some of the coolest products A Polkie has ever produced!
2 ch- Polk CRS+ * Vincent SA-31MK Preamp * Vincent Sp-331 Amp * Marantz SA8005 SACD * Project Xperience Classic TT * Sumiko Blue Point #2 MC cartridge

Oh yeah @voltz I followed Larry's CRS project thread. It's close to half the reason why I'd like to have my own stands hand built.
