Is there a correct answer? Is there an audible difference? I've alway been an UPPER... I honestly don't know the reason... (BTW while you are playing a record)

When I had my turntable, the cover was off. It can pick up sound waves, and transfer the vibrations to the base.

I have used mine both ways and can't tell a difference, although I have heard people say having the cover down makes the cover act like a bell. I figure sound waves will affect the needle one way or another, and having the cover down prevents dust from getting on the LP while it is playing. So, most of the time it is cover down for me.

Most covers are acrylic of some type, and have a resonance frequency. That could also be transferred to the base.

  • Is there a right or wrong? Not a consistent answer. I test each table just like I test feedback in a live sound situation since the cartridge is really just a microphone. I pump the volume to see if there is any feedback present. Tap the lid, raise it, if it causes problems raised or lowered that don't exist when it is off, it comes off during play. I have had both scenarios happen depending on the gear and setup location with proximity to speakers/subs.

Until I got my current table, I too was an upper. With this table though, I like it down. It may be purely aesthetic.

It's there just for dust! Has no value to the operation of TT when playing so up or even better off completely. On when not in use to keep dust off of TT and mechanisms.

  • Down/Up - depends on which table, but always on.

I hear no difference on the MMF 5SE with the cover down during play or tilted up. It does not lend itself to complete removal.

On the Bluenote Bellavista, I leave it tilted up due to the height of my "Joe's - The Clamp". It also does not lend itself to complete removal.

I have a custom cover I made and it cannot be on when playing a record. I've heard that the hinged ones will suck in dust as you put it down when playing a record...or is it when you pull it up! :/

Although I don't have my turntable set up at the moment, this is the same reason I keep mine up. I have Joe's clamp as well and love it.
