Positive thoughts being sent your way.
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

As was already said. Surgeons just love to cut. Is it possible for you to get a second (or third) opinion from a wound care specialist?
It would be great if you had choices regarding your care.
But best of luck in either case.

Sorry you are going through this Tony. When I first started reading your description of the toe, I wondered if it was a brown recluse spider bite. Everything you described sounded like you had been bit by one. Hope all goes well with your recovery. Keep the faith Tony.

    Wishing you well, Tony.

If the VA has you on just oral antibiotics, it's time to switch to a PICC line and some industrial grade antibiotics.
Combo of vancomycin and cefepime via a PICC line does wonders for some very, very nasty foot infections. Did I mention VERY, VERY nasty foot infections ?
Haven't had any experience with RESTORE, but the medical product Regranex is extremely effective. And extremely expensive, probably because it's made out of baby foreskins. The VA may not offer that.
Once a wound starts to heal up, the wound dressing Promogran is very effective, and can be bought off of Amazon or Ebay. Insurance pays a lot for Promogran, but the Amazon/Ebay offerings come from Canada so it is inexpensive; $7.00 per dressing.

In any event, I wish you well. Plug & chug, and question everything your doctors tell you.
I've been dealing with doctors for over 30 years and I ALWAYS question what I'm told by doctors no matter what.

We've used both oral and I.V. antibiotics with no results (been trying to get this to heal for almost 3 month), The problem is the BONE is infected and according to what both the Infectious Control & Wound Care specialist are saying is that even if they know what bug it is and being under the best conditions once the BONE gets infected you've only got about a %10 chance and in my condition (Long term 30+ years Spinal Cord Injury) that number drops below %2. If the bone had not gotten infected it would have been healed already. The thing keeps healing up the wrong way outside - in, it no more than heals and then a couple days later it turns dark red and opens up. So it never heals right, Another thing that works great on all kinds of wounds is Medical Honey amazing stuff.
The VA would amputate a paper cut just sit save a buck rather than do any real medical treatment. Experienced that first hand back in the day when four of my fingers got bit by an F/A-18. They wanted to take all of them but my thumb down to the first joints and never did set the fracture in the palm of my hand. I refused to let them do it and all my fingers work like they should.

If you can, seek another opinion, and God bless you and your family.
    Thank you for your service.

Actually in the 15+ years since I've been going to one of the top rated Spinal Cord Injury Units in the V.A. system and the country surgery is frowned upon and only considered as a last resort. I have know guys who have spent almost a year in the V.A. getting a skin ulcer (bed sore) that have started to tunnel to heal naturally where they could have saved a lot of money and time by doing what's called a flap surgery. If you can let these sores heal naturally it's better for the patient with less chance of compilations.

It sounds like when you were bit by that F/A-18 you were on active duty, If that was the case you weren't treated by the V.A. but a military doctor (they do like to do things quick and dirty). You got lucky that your fingers healed, See good thing do happen to good people. :)

This is one thing a lot of people don't understand, The V.A. IS NOT a military hospital as a matter of federal law the V.A. CAN NOT treat active duty personal or civilians who have not served, been dishonorably discharged, or not a direct relative of someone who has honorably served and has been discharged.

One other thing to remember most people who bad mouth the V.A. usually have no direct experience and are just repeating what they've heard or read. Also the V.A. is like the C.I.A. in that you only hear about the screw-ups and not the success.

Once again thanks for the support guys it helps a lot.
